L'efant aux biscuit (Child with Cookie)
By Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Located in Palo Alto, CA
An intimate portrait of his second son, Jean Renoir (1894 – 1979), evokes a childlike sentiment and love that Renoir had for his children. Most likely no more than age 3, Jean is shown here with a cookie, beneath a frilly bonnet characteristic of late 19th century French society. His pink, rosy cheeks are defined with rich, glowing hues that contrast from the pale yellow and grey background in which he rests. Jean was also featured in a family portrait of the Renoirs, titled La Famille de l’Artiste (1896). Created in 1899, this Color Lithograph on Cream Laid Paper is from the edition of 100, from the unpublishedL’Album d’estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard; printed by Auguste Clot, Paris. Catalogue Raisonné: It is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the final sale of the work): 1. Amaranthus tricolor: A 17th-18th C. Besler Hand-colored Botanical Engraving
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a hand-colored copper plate engraving entitled "Amaranthus Tricolor", depicting a flowering Amaranthus Tricolor plant from Basilius Besler's landmark work, Hortus Eystettensis (Garden at Eichstatt), first published in 1613 in Eichstatt, Germany near Nuremberg and later in 1640 and 1713. Amaranthus tricolor, known as edible amaranth, is a species of flowering plant in the genus Amaranthus. The plant is often cultivated for ornamental and culinary purposes. Cultivars have a striking yellow, red, and green foliage. It is known as Joseph's coat in some areas, after the biblical figure Joseph, who is said to have worn a coat of many colors. Amaranthus tricolor is one of several species of amaranth cultivated in warm regions across the world. This beautiful colorful engraving is printed on thin laid chain-linked paper with very wide margins. There is a short crease in the upper right corner, mild irregularity of the left, right and lower edges and some bleed-through of text from the verso. The print is otherwise in excellent condition with striking hand-coloring. The sheet measures 22.13" high and 17.13" wide. Basilius Besler (1561–1629) was an apothecary and botanist. He was curator of the Willibaldsburg Castle garden of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, prince bishop...

Mascara Roja
By Rufino Tamayo
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Mascara Roja" 1969 is an original colors lithograph on B.F.K. Rives paper by renown Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo, 1899-1991. It is hand signed and inscribed H.C. (Hors Commerce) in pencil by the artist. The image size is 21 x 27.25 inches, framed size is 37.25 x 42 inches. Published by Touchtone Publisher, New York, printed by Ateliers Desjobert, Paris. Referenced and pictured in the artist's catalogue raisonne by Pereda, plate #124. Custom framed in a wooden gold leaf frame, with gold and red spacer and fabric matting. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: A native of Oaxaca in Southern Mexico, Rufino Tamayo's father was a shoemaker, and his mother a seamstress. Some accounts state that he was descended from Zapotec Indians, but he was actually 'mestizo' - of mixed indigenous/European ancestry. (Santa Barbara Museum of Art). He began painting at age 11. Orphaned at the age of 12, Tamayo moved to Mexico City, where he was raised by his maternal aunt who owned a wholesale fruit business. In 1917, he entered the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts, but left soon after to pursue independent study. Four years later, Tamayo was appointed the head designer of the department of ethnographic drawings at the National Museum of Archaeology in Mexico City. There he was surrounded by pre-Colombian objects, an aesthetic inspiration that would play a pivotal role in his life. In his own work, Tamayo integrated the forms and tones of pre-Columbian ceramics into his early still lives and portraits of Mexican men and women. In the early 1920s he also taught art classes in Mexico City's public schools. Despite his involvement in Mexican history, he did not subscribe to the idea of art as nationalistic propaganda. Modern Mexican art at that time was dominated by 'The Three Great Ones' : Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueros, but Tamayo began to be noted as someone 'new' and different' for his blending of the aesthetics of post Revolutionary Mexico with the vanguard artists of Europe and the United States. After the Mexican Revolution, he focused on creating his own identity in his work, expressing what he thought was the traditional Mexico, and refusing to follow the political trends of his contemporary artists. This caused some to see him as a 'traitor' to the political cause, and he felt it difficult to freely express himself in his art. As a result, he decided to leave Mexico in 1926 and move to New York, along with his friend, the composer Carlos Chavez. The first exhibition of Tamayo's work in the United States was held at the Weyhe Gallery, New York, in that same year. The show was successful, and Tamayo was praised for his 'authentic' status as a Mexican of 'indigenous heritage', and for his internationally appealing Modernist aesthetic. (Santa Barbara Museum of Art). Throughout the late thirties and early forties New York's Valentine Gallery gave him shows. For nine years, beginning in 1938, he taught at the Dalton School in New York. In 1929, some health problems led him to return to Mexico for treatment. While there he took a series of teaching jobs. During this period he became romantically involved with the artist Maria Izquierdo...

He interprets his subject matter loosely, keeping his figures open and emphasizing motion through line and contour. A foreword in a book on Gorg's work captures his artistic sensibility: "The predominant subject is the human body: it is the body of a young, slim, beautiful person. The face remains vague, the gestures are those of free motion...

Considered to be one of Picasso’s monumental linoleum prints, Pablo Picasso Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse), 1959 is a large-scale artwork that captures the essence of this artist’s innovation and minimalist creativity. His simple lines curve and undulated together to form the characters of the piece: the woman – feminine and robust, the horse – whimsical and characteristic, and the picador – strong and masculine. All three subjects create a triad composition making way for a harmonious and balanced piece. The entire work exudes an air of femininity and mystery, all set against a backdrop of a misty grey helping to create Picasso’s sensual environment of intrigue. Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse) is a color linocut on Arches paper hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered 21/50 in pencil in the lower left margin, this work was printed by Arnéra, Vallauris and published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris. House in the sun
By Kenneth Miller Adams
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "House in the Sun" c.1930 is an offset lithograph on wove paper by noted Taos, New Mexico artist Kenneth Miller Adams, 1897-1966. It is signed and titled in the plate. The artwork (image) size is 6.75 x 12 inches, framed size is 13.5 x 18.25 inches. Custom framed in silver metal frame, with light grey matting. It is in excellent condition, the frame have some very small minor scratches, barely visible. About the artist: Painter Kenneth Adams (1897-1963) arrived on the Taos art scene in 1924, at the urging of his former instructor Andrew Dasburg. Although Adams had been born and raised less than 700 miles away in Topeka, Kansas, his journey to the Southwest had been years - and countries - in the making. Earlier in his 20s, Adams had embarked on the Midwesterner’s equivalent of a Grand Tour: Chicago, then New York City, and finally, Italy and France. From these sojourns, the artist had absorbed all the lessons in light, color, and form that renowned teachers and rolling countrysides could offer. Now, thanks to Dasburg’s invitation, Adams found he could stop traveling; he had finished honing his craft and found his muse. New Mexico - its people and its land - would be an infinite source of inspiration. Adam’s painterly devotion soon impressed the prestigious Taos Society of Artists...

American Indian Navajo
By Ozz Franca
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "American Indian, Navajo" is a offset lithograph on paper by noted Brazilan artist Ozz Franca, 1928-1991. The image size is 21 x 14.75 inches, framed size is 31.25 x 27 inches. Custom framed in a wooden brown/grey frame, with lith purple matting. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Born October 2, 1928, França (pronounced FRON-suh) grew up in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and from an early age showed talent as an artist, as well as exceptional prowess as a competitive swimmer. At 14 he won first prize at the annual Spring Salon Art Competition. At 15, he qualified for the Brazilian Olympic Swimming Team. With two amazing talents, França was unsure what he should do with his life. Fate stepped in, and the Olympic Games were canceled the year França was to compete due to the outbreak of World War II. At that point, he decided to devote his life to art. He held his first one-man show at the age of 18. Following what he would later say was the best advice anyone ever gave him, França came to the U.S, to accept a scholarship in Utah. A year later, he moved to Hollywood and began doing movie illustration for Walt Disney. His projects included Lady and the Tramp and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. He moonlighted as a swimmer when movie parts were available. França painted many subjects, but he is best known for his esoteric images of Native American women. França's art enters the world of fantasy and dreams, where the spiritual meets the sensual. His works, with their floating imagery and airy, muted colors, evoke an aura of mystery. França said he always painted his subjects, which primarily were women, either in profile, looking toward the edge of the painting, or looking over her shoulder, "so that anyone could walk into it." Joan Lee, print marketing professional, said that Ozz saw the spirituality and quiet dignity of Native American men and women. "there's a romance surrounding Native Americans that people appreciate seeing," said Lee. Ozz França died in 1991. Ozz Franca’s work is held in the collections of numerous celebrity, including: Jacqueline Onassis Lyndon B. Johnson Patty Duke Jerry Lewis Kim Novak Burt Lancaster Gig Young Tom Bradley Sammy Davis, Jr. Ronald Reagan Red Skelton...
