Signed lower right: “Herbert Barnett”. Published: Art Digest, November, 1939. Exhibited: Marie Harriman Gallery, New York, 1939. The Institute of Contemporary Art, “Art of New England”, 1939. Contemporary Arts, Inc., New York, November, 1939. Herbert Barnett was an American artist whose life and work was closely tied to New England, and yet, his distinctive style of painting draws upon both the American tradition of representation and the artistic innovations of the Cubists. He is known as a painter of extraordinary ability and a virtuoso draftsman. Born in Cranston, Rhode Island, Barnett grew up in Providence. While still in high school, he began to study painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. From 1927-31, he studied at the Boston Museum School and soon acquired a reputation for technical proficiency. At seventeen, he had his first one-man show at the Grace Horne Gallery in Boston and was already teaching private classes. After art school, where he won the Paige Travelling Fellowship, Barnett spent three years traveling and studying in Europe. In the late 1930s, Barnett's bold and expressive figure paintings and Cape Ann landscapes...

Street in Naples
By Sean Flood
Located in Boston, MA
Sean Flood (American, b.1982), Street in Naples, 2012. Signed lower right: "Sean Flood". Painting depicts a cityscape of a street in Naples, Italy. Painting dimensions: 46 x 32 inches. Framed dimensions: 48 3/4 x 34 1/2 inches. Born and raised on the South Shore of Massachusetts, Sean Flood has always been drawing. The process of construction has also surrounded him for much of his life. His father was a builder, and Flood himself worked construction during his time at the Art Institute of Boston. Flood’s art is a reflection of these factors: when he approaches a work, he is drawing with paint, constructing his scenes from the ground up, much like how a building is raised. His subject matter, not surprisingly, pulls from his fascination and familiarity with the architecture of cities. Flood presents his viewers with the modern era’s landscape: the urban jungle created by man’s building efforts. The kinetic energy felt in Flood’s paintings has its root’s in the artist’s background. Flood spent many years as a street artist working in graffiti, and still approaches his paintings with the same dynamism used in covering a blank wall. After brief forays in architecture and illustration, Flood found a home in fine art under the tutelage of George Nick, realizing that painting could appreciate both a frenzied energy and an eye for the construction process. Flood uses both to create works that reflect the hectic feel of urban life, yet also project the familiarity and comfort a city brings to its denizens. Flood’s work has been exhibited at many venues including the deCordova Museum, Duxbury Art...

[Morgan Le Fey]
By Hazel Brill Jackson
Located in Boston, MA
Signed on base: "Hazel Brill Jackson". Also with artist's monogram. In fine condition. Hazel Brill Jackson (Born December 15, 1894, in Philadelphia) spent most of her early childhood in Italy. Attending the Scuola Rosatti in Florence, Jackson enjoyed afternoons at the zoo, pursuing her favorite pastime: drawing animals. World War I forced the return of the Jackson family to the United States where they settled in Boston. Hazel spent the next four years at the Boston Museum School, where she studied with Bela Pratt and Charles Grafly. Jackson returned to Rome after the war, where she worked with Angelo Zanelli and later had her own studio. With such works as Roman Work Horse and Ned (Mussolini's favorite jumper), she began to exhibit both in Rome and Florence, and eventually became a member of the Circolo Artistico di Roma. The sculptress returned to the United States in 1935 and opened a studio in Newburgh, New York. She continued to sculpt animals, concentrating on horse and dog portraits. Jackson had one-woman shows at the Guild of Boston Artists in 1938 and in 1968. In 1945, she was awarded the Ellin P. Speyer Prize by the National Academy of Design in New York City for Play-Day and Romance (a mare and foal group) and in 1949, she won the same prize for Indian Antelope. Hazel Jackson is represented in the Brookgreen Gardens collection by The Listeners, a sculpture group of raccoons, which was placed there in 1964. Don Quixote, now at Wellesley College won Jackson the Mahonri Young...
