David Smith-Harrison studied at Utah State University and served as studio assistant to Adrian Van Stuchelen and Moishe Smith. Before leaving for Europe, Smith-Harrison began an intense professional association as a studio assistant to artist Trevor Southey.
Smith-Harrison’s imagery is distinctive for its meticulous and studied execution and rigorous, demanding craftsmanship. The results are generally rich in subtle articulations and poetic spirit. His work is located in private collection in Japan, Taiwan, Republic of China, Spain and the United States.

This is a 16th century original hand-colored copperplate engraved map of a bird's-eye View of Embden, Germany entitled " Emuda, vulgo Embden vrbs Frisia orientalis primaria" by Georg Braun & Franz Hogenberg, in volume II of their famous city atlas "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", published in Cologne, Germany in 1575.
This is a beautifully colored and detailed map of Emden, a seaport in northwestern Germany, along the Ems River and perhaps portions of over Dollart Bay, near the border with the Netherland. The map depicts a bird's-eye view of the city from the southwest, as well as a view of the harbor and an extensive system of canals. Numerous ships of various sizes, as well as two rowboats containing numerous occupants are seen in the main waterway in the foreground and additional boats line two canals in the center of the city. Two men and two women are shown on a hill in the foreground on the right, dressed in the 16th century style of nobility. Two ornate crests are included in each corner. A title strap-work cartouche is in the upper center with the title in Latin. The crest on the right including Engelke up de Muer (The Little Angel on the Wall) was granted by Emperor Maximilian I in 1495.
This is an English translation of an excerpt of Braun's description of Embden: "In Emden, the capital of East Frisia, rich merchants live in very fine houses. The city has a broad and well-situated harbour, which in my opinion is unique in Holland. Frisia and the whole of the Netherlands, for the ships can anchor here right under the city walls. They have also extended the harbour as far as the New Town, so that up to 400 ships can now find shelter here when the sea is rough."
The emphasis on the harbor and waterways within the city highlights the importance of Emden's place as a seaport at this time. Embden developed from a Dutch/Flemish trading settlement in the 7th-8th centuries into a city as late as late 14th century. In 1494 it was granted staple rights, and in 1536 the harbour was extended. In the mid-16th century Emden's port was thought to have the most ships in Europe. Its population then was about 5,000, rising to 15,000 by the end of the 16th century. The Ems River flowed directly under the city walls, but its course was changed in the 17th century by the construction of a canal. Emden has canals within its city limits, a typical feature of Dutch towns, which also enabled the extension of the harbor. In 1744 Emden was annexed by Prussia and is now part of Germany. It was captured by French forces in 1757 during the Seven Years' War, but recaptured by Anglo-German forces in 1758. During the Napoleonic French era, Emden and the surrounding lands of East Frisia were part of the short-lived Kingdom of Holland.

This is an original 19th century hand-colored folio-sized lithograph entitled "Campylopterus Cuvieri" (Cuvier's Sabre-wing Hummingbird) by John Gould, as plate 52 published in his "A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds", published in London between 1849 and 1861. The print, which was drawn by Gould and Henry Richter and lithographed by Hullmandel and Walton, depicts two mostly green-colored hummingbirds with brown wings perched on a branch of a tropical long leafed plant, possibly bamboo with ferns in the background.
This beautiful Gould hand-colored hummingbird lithograph is augmented with gum-arabic paint. It is in very good condition, other than some discoloration at the edges of the upper and lower right corners and residual binding material where the print was bound in the 19th century publication. The original descriptive text page from Gould's 19th century publication is included.

This artwork titled ""Mer Pacifique (Pacific Ocean)" 1979 is an original color etching with aquatint on Arches paper by French artist Jean Solombre, 1948-2005. It is hand signed, dated, titled and numbered 125/125 in pencil by the artist. The image (plate mark) size is 17 x 17 inches, framed size is 31.75 x 25 inches. Framed in a mahogany style wood frame, with off white matting. It is in excellent condition, the frame has very small minor restorations, practically invisible.
About the artist:
Jean Solombre was born in Paris France in 1948. Solombre is an internationally respected painter, engraver, and writer. Tapestries created from images of Solombre paintings are woven at the atelier Aubsson, in France. The first Solombre fiber art created at Aubsson, was produced in 1979. Solombre, among the finest artists in France, was first acclaimed as printmaker, best known for his handsome richly textured and technically exquisite aquatint engravings which he presented with descriptive original poetry. Solombre's work has been shown in premiere art exhibitions Since 1970 including: The Great and Young of Today, at the Museum of Grand Palais, Paris; The Print Biennial at the Museum Galleria, Paris; and The International Art Fair in Paris, Basel, Dusseldorf, Washington, and New York. Solombre's printmaking intaglio technique masterfully combines the techniques of acquatint and engraving. "Pillory, Charing Cross" is an illustration (Plate 62) from "The Microcosm of London", published in London in 1809 by R Ackermann's Repository of Arts. The scene was created by one of the most famous British satirists and caricaturists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries' Georgian Period, Thomas Rowlandson, who drew the figures, while Augustus Charles Pugin drew the architecture. The plate was then created by Hill, Stadler and Bluck using a combination of aquatint and etching and was then hand colored with watercolor. Scenes illustrated in "The Microcosm of London" gives an accurate and often comical view of everyday life in London during the Regency Period of the early 19th century. While Pugin’s excellent architectural drawings capture the size and shape of the exterior as well as the interior of London’s principal buildings, Thomas Rowlandson’s insightful and often whimsical and satirical view of the city's inhabitants depicts the color and vitality of the late Georgian society, both rich and poor alike.
