However, the hand carved wood pilasters or panels, have the most amazing patina and an incredible old and worn green stain, that they just spoke to us. The rope detailing, at the top of each panel, is actually hand carved wood, that appears to have been gilded when new, but most likely was exposed to coal soot from a fireplace, similar to what you might see on a gilded mantel mirror...
