Dutch artist Frans van Straaten (1963) should be called an artist of balance always searching for harmony between force and movement in combination with space. Because of the wide range in his art-education he has mastered the art of drawing, painting and sculpting technology. However, the classical plastic art of sculpture and modeling opens up the possibility for him to create his own language of sculpture in answer to his urge for art.
Due to this style of sculpting, the preference for bronze is natural.
After his study of sculpture at the Academy of Art in Rotterdam (1988), Frans van Straaten creates bronze sculptures in which he unites force and movement. Feeling and Emotion converted into Matter Sculpture is an experience of space combined with the challenge of the three-dimensional. The tension of space and movement are the themes, which Frans expresses in his sculptures. Summary it can be said that the power of life and being, the feeling and emotion by force and movement will be converted into matter. The experience of space is being expressed in the shapes and characters in each of Frans’ sculptures. His sculptures of bulls express explosive power while the horses find their strength in being elegant. With this exhibition we honour James Coignard, showing some of his last carborundum engravings and paintings as well as presenting the book “L’œuvre gravé de James Coignard” volume VI. In this edition, we have gathered together all the engravings that James Coignard produced between June 2005 and his decease, on 7 March 2008. Behind him he left many fond memories and a life’s work as a great artist.
James Coignard’s principal modes of expression were oil on canvas and gravure au carborundum, but also in bronze and glass sculptures as well as in ceramics. His work has been shown on more than 400 exhibitions, primarily in Central Europe and Scandinavia, but also in Canada and the USA. His first Swedish exhibition was at Malmö Museum in 1956. The early 1970s saw the start of a long-term liaison with Galleri Östermalm in Stockholm, owned by Editions Sonet. New Bauhus is a bronze sculpture with black patina, it is connected to a steel base. The edition size is 25. This sculpture stands on shelf as well as be hung on wall. Joan wants to depict the sense of freedom and free will by capturing the flying pose of the female figurine.
Joan’s latest sculpture series of female figures brings an out-of-the-box approach to sculpture creation. The small vivid women figures linked or bonded to their pedestals; the figures are delicate and intriguing representation of a woman’s mind and soul yearning for liberty, freedom, a moment of tranquility from busy daily life, or a space that she could spend the time totally with herself and for escaping from the routine and monotony.
The woman made of bronze is warm and sensual and dances in/on a structure of rusted iron. She observes the world from her/ours solitude, from this vertiginous watchtower (metaphor of life, universe) rusted because the inexorable time. The base rises impressively, creating a contradiction between both pieces. However, in Joan’s work the geometrical base and the figure find a surprising harmony.
