The Robin Rice Gallery announces a solo photography exhibition by Pete Kelly. The opening reception will be held May 3, 2017 with the show running through June 25, 2017.
Pete Kelly’s latest show admirably showcases the lush greenness, diverse landscape, and ever-fleeting light of the British terrain. We are invited to join his excursions throughout the country as he brings light to the captivating, idiosyncratic characteristics of the land. He captures the oddities of the landscape; solitary figures bathing in sunlight, silhouette of a frolicking Great Dane in the mist, and subtle remnants of a bygone era. Kelly’s incredibly unique, picturesque editing style further mythologizes his subjects, he meddles with an air of mystery that defines the viewers experience.
Kelly employs a mixture of a single image with layers of photographs of textures. The feel and look of the end result pay homage to English romanticist landscape painters such as J.M.W Turner and Constable. Kelly applies varnish and then uses Photographic Encaustic wax over the print. He encases the archival pigment print in beeswax and damar resin; tree sap in its purest form. These organic components have been found to have preserving qualities by ancient Egyptians, which replace the need for glass over the photograph. The impersonality of a raw digital file is alleviated through this process and makes the image a ‘one off. Combining modern photographic and printing technology with ancient crafting techniques, Kelly
is the originator of art that is tactile, archival and organic.
In one image entitled ‘Brabyns Autumn” examines man’s contemporaneously interruptive and complimentary relationship with the surrounding land, and zeros in on a serenity only manifested when man and nature successfully coexist. Small figures, animals, and dwellings found in the landscape are essential points of interest for Kelly. The beauty of Tina West’s latest show lies in the maturity and wonder of her still lives. For every photo, West stages her scene with unique treasures from her vast collection. Allowing them to speak to her, rather than the opposite, each object is chosen not because of an image West is trying to recreate from her mind, but because of each object’s sheer attraction.
The sharp subconscious connection West feels to her still life objects comes across strongly. In this exhibition, Mindaugas Gabrenas invites us to reflect on the poetics of place through his lyrical and surrealist imagery. His hand-printed silver gelatin prints reveal abandoned regions, wild coasts and strange territories from Lithuania to Scotland to America. As a scientific innovator, he uses unique techniques and unconventional materials in order to create his whimsical, dream photos.
In “Spinning The Wheel”, stars trace the sky in a curved motion and meet the water below creating a sense of the infinite. As Gabrenas explores and captures landscapes through very long exposures, he actually meditates and reflects on the world around him encouraging his viewers to imagine themselves within the landscapes and dream with him.
In another image “Dream About an Empty House”, that was taken in Lithuania, we see a young girl from behind in a red polka dotted dress as she faces an abandoned home. Using his handmade camera he constructed by merging two cameras—a Kiev 88 and a Kodak Duaflex II. The viewfinder of the Duaflex serves as an additional filter on the lens of the Kiev 88, which is fixed to its body with several macro rings. Before shooting the film, he wraps it in black rye bread and waits several days for the mold to grow onto the film. The combination of these two techniques creates a sense of motion around the central figure.
“Alternatives”, our invitational image, pulls us into Gabrenas’ world. The focused close-up and abstracted view of train tracks distorts a familiar shape into a strange and unusual form. The tracks lead you in the distance, a blurry city of New York. The ironic lack of human life in New York City conveys a mystifying sense of place.

Lance Clayton’s aquatic, figurative photographs contain an attention to detail that leaves the viewer constantly discovering new information within them. His oblique compositions are a profusion of the quirky, the surreal, and the ambiguous, all of which are permeated by a haunting presence. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination.
“Swim”, is an illustrative shot of a man doing the butterfly stroke, his back to the viewer with arms powerfully extended across the frame, as if to embrace the open, infinite skies above him. The grainy quality of the piece is created using a dark room technique in which tissue is layered upon the photograph, creating an allover ethereal atmosphere reminiscent of Edward Steichen’s early work.

In her ninth solo show at the Robin Rice Gallery, veteran artist Patricia Heal documents her visual narrative of their enchanted home in upstate New York. Hidden within untouched forests lies Peabrook, a babbling brook running through the property. The classic architecture of the house is offset by uniquely quirky interiors designed by the English-born Patricia and her husband, Anthony Cotsifas, which generate an otherworldly existence within the estate. “Peabrook is my Neverland,” Heal states, in reference to J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. “It is a fictional place often described as a metaphor for eternal childhood.” Heal hopes that, with just a visit to the gallery and a little imagination, you, too, can see Peabrook.
Her use of the large format, now-extinct Polaroid film for her black and white photographs, and the warm soft colors found in many of the other pieces of the collection, contribute to the sense of antiquity and fantasy surrounding Peabrook. The whimsical subject matter, including mythical creatures and extensive taxidermy, complete the “magical” representation of Heal’s home that she strove to depict. The simply framed 4” x 5”, 5” x 7” and 8” x 10” photographs sit within large mattes, in keeping with the classical quality of her images. “I really wanted to work in film again, and this project seemed the right one to do it with,” says Heal, who lists Sarah Moon and André Kertesz as artistic inspirations.
The dark and mysterious invitational image, “Willow”, depicts a portrait of a hooded woman, her downward gaze partially obstructed by the soft branches of a fern from the surrounding garden.
The earth-toned image contains the unpredictable streaked effect of developed instant film.

A NEW COLLABORATION
Tina West + Tucker Robbins 2020
The Robin Rice Gallery is pleased to present a photographic exhibition by Tina West, featuring a special new collaboration between Robin Rice and furniture designer, activist Tucker Robbins. Jessica Kravitz of Exalted Alchemy created an aromatic experience exclusively for the exhibition. The installation was designed by sculpture Amy Pilkington. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2019 from 6pm to 8pm. This is Tina West’s seventh solo exhibition at the Robin Rice Gallery and Tucker Robbins’ first collaboration with Robin Rice.
Inspired of a serendipitous meeting between Robin Rice and Tucker Robbins on a rainy day in New York City, this latest collaboration welcomes an exciting new era at The Robin Rice Gallery. Breaking from the gallery’s traditional style of display, West’s photography will be creatively integrated with Robbins’ artisan furniture. Designed and built on the edge of the forest by indigenous people using centuries-old techniques, these products are born out of Tucker Robbins’ travels to remote locations. Whether woven textile, clay pottery or wood sculpture, these sustainably made products are materials that have been salvaged and refashioned into works of exquisite craftsmanship that are truly one of a kind.
Found objects are essential in the installation. Boosting from an impressive visual flow, the installation discovers intersections between the works that can be seen to echo throughout the space. As West’s “Passion Lies at the Edge of Uncertainty” presents an image composed of dark negative space leading down to a snake skin on the surface below, Robbins’ “Snaka Waka Table” is an Acadian side-table found nearby that was named by the Bamun carvers of Cameroon who likened its circular design to snake walking. Together, West and Robbins make for an installation that invites audiences to sit down and connect to the fine art objects in a manner different from what they are regularly accustomed to at the Robin Rice Gallery.
In speaking of her influences, West cites Josef Sudek as an early inspiration on her work for how he made evocative black and white photographs out of everyday happenings. Sudek himself once remarked, “I like to tell stories about the life of inanimate objects, to relate something mysterious.” This statement resonates well within West’s own work as she demonstrates a similar gift for finding the beauty in the banality of things overlooked. Her work also shares a kindred spirit with the eccentric assemblages of disparate images made by Joseph Cornell and the experimental platinum prints of Jan Groover...

In the hazy, warm New York summer, little is more refreshing than reclining on the beach in the mist of the icy ocean waves or enjoying a family trip to the country house. Each summer, Rice curates her favorite show, the Summertime Salon, which reminds us of this exact seasonal sentiment. The two, long walls of the gallery become mosaicked, top to bottom, side to side, in photographs that evoke all the preeminent feelings and memories of summer. Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece comes into fruition. This year is no exception. The show is a haven of what the Robin Rice Gallery stands for, a community of art and experience.
As the largest annual exhibition, the Summertime Salon is carefully pieced together, the results are staggering. The works of the 53 gallery artists come together communally, reinforcing the overall sense of unity that the show creates as a whole. In knowing the photographs so fluently, Rice strategically places them together in a way that will enhance the individual stories contained in each. The Robin Rice Gallery is pleased to present At 1000 Feet, a photographic exhibition by Dinesh Boaz. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, November 6th from 6pm to 8pm. The show will run through January 5, 2020. At 1000 Feet is Boaz’s first solo exhibition at the Robin Rice Gallery.
As a photographer, Boaz defies a traditional approach to perspective and instead situates himself quite literally in the sky above. The resulting work is breathtaking and arresting. Each image captured by Boaz offers his audiences a rare composition of both nature and civilization in all their complexity. Originally a recording studio owner and music producer in New York City, Boaz became an avid aerial photographer almost entirely by accident after he won a “doors off” helicopter ride over Manhattan that opened his eyes to a new realm of experience. The oddity of what he saw sparked a deep fascination that led Boaz to return again and again to the cramped cockpits of such helicopters until he found in them a studio at 1000 feet above.
Flying well away from the world below, Boaz holds an eye in the sky. With it, he surveys terrain and develops concepts in real time as colors and textures flood into sight during each ride. Working under the throbbing sounds of the propellers overhead, Boaz directs the pilot over radio and creates spontaneous images of calm amidst chaos. In speaking of his method, he explains, “I seek out sound in my photos; I look to find those symbiotic patterns and fast-changing colors that play together in rhythm, similar to the layers that make up a beat.” Through this unique process, Boaz discovers a synesthetic harmony in each photograph just as he would if he was visualizing music on a track.
As a result, the 13 large-format dye sublimation prints of Hawaii, Israel, Arizona, California and Key West in this exhibition hold a lingering tranquility as they flow throughout the gallery. The exhibition’s invitational image “Desert Isle” shows the tides of an emerald green ocean washing over sunbeam yellow sands to form a vibrant ripple green that coalesces into an S-shaped coastline where distant row boats and sunbathers appear like ants. His visionary approach to expanding how audiences see the everyday is reminiscent of Andreas Gursky who did the same in Rhine II (1999) which captured the magnificence of the Rhine River with virtuoso ease.
Gifted with a sight of the world top down, Boaz’s aerial photography evokes a cosmic awareness of humanity as a tiny dot in the universe which borders on the surreal. He credits his influences to be Joan Miro, Christopher Nolan, Andreas Gursky, Annie Leibowitz and Edward Burtynsky. Born in India with deep roots in Sri Lanka, Boaz moved from Chennai to the United States. He studied Psychology at Rutgers University, but it was there that he also took his first photography class. After graduation, he ran a successful recording studio in Soho. Then, as he returned to photography, he took multiple courses including digital printmaking at the International Center of Photography. In May 2019, Boaz was announced as the winner of the National Geographic Adventure photography contest for his piece “All The People”.

The Robin Rice Gallery announces a solo photography exhibition by Pete Kelly. The opening reception will be held May 3, 2017 with the show running through June 25, 2017.
Pete Kelly’s latest show admirably showcases the lush greenness, diverse landscape, and ever-fleeting light of the British terrain. We are invited to join his excursions throughout the country as he brings light to the captivating, idiosyncratic characteristics of the land. He captures the oddities of the landscape; solitary figures bathing in sunlight, silhouette of a frolicking Great Dane in the mist, and subtle remnants of a bygone era. Kelly’s incredibly unique, picturesque editing style further mythologizes his subjects, he meddles with an air of mystery that defines the viewers experience.
Kelly employs a mixture of a single image with layers of photographs of textures. The feel and look of the end result pay homage to English romanticist landscape painters such as J.M.W Turner and Constable. Kelly applies varnish and then uses Photographic Encaustic wax over the print. He encases the archival pigment print in beeswax and damar resin; tree sap in its purest form. These organic components have been found to have preserving qualities by ancient Egyptians, which replace the need for glass over the photograph. The impersonality of a raw digital file is alleviated through this process and makes the image a ‘one off. Combining modern photographic and printing technology with ancient crafting techniques, Kelly
is the originator of art that is tactile, archival and organic.
In one image entitled ‘Brabyns Autumn” examines man’s contemporaneously interruptive and complimentary relationship with the surrounding land, and zeros in on a serenity only manifested when man and nature successfully coexist. Small figures, animals, and dwellings found in the landscape are essential points of interest for Kelly. Rice has brought together the works of 60 gallery artists and nearly a hundred photographs for this salon-style exhibition. From floor to ceiling, the walls of the gallery are a mosaic of various size photographs in sepia, color and black & white, expertly hung to fit together like pieces of a puzzle. “This is my favorite exhibition even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Rice. “I love the moment when a viewer is first drawn to an image. Sometimes in’s indefinable; a moment when the viewer not only shares but reconnects to an experience remembered.”
Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece is revealed to showcase an exhibition stronger than the year before. Rice has a close relationship with the works of her photographers, and strategically curates the show to best exemplify the artists’ strengths, remaining cohesively linked by Rice’s aesthetic.

ABOUT:
In Gordon’s third exhibition, his remarkable capacity for discovery and self-described “pathological curiosity” makes for an entirely unpredictable series of photographs, while the small size of the gelatin silver prints emphasizes their detailed nature and enhances the mysterious quality generated by his choice in cameras (namely, the increasingly popular Holga film camera). Stettinius’ wry sense of humor, references to popular culture, and use of kitschy subject matter permeate the entire black and white exhibition.
The invitational image, “Yoda’s Garden”, is a perfect emblem of the exhibition’s mischievously comedic representation of Americana. In this image, a scarecrow proudly stands at the center of a growing cornfield, a gingham dress wrapping its body and a mask of the popular Star Wars character “Yoda” serving as its head. Although the references to both Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz may appear staged, Stettinius’ photography is anything but.
Stettinius frequently finds inspiration in road trips, generating an aesthetic with the satirical playfulness of David Graham or Ralph Meatyard.
