"Rolling Stone Magazine, Natalie Merchant", New York, NY, 1994
By Jose Picayo
Located in Hudson, NY
This photograph is printed on Japanese Paper. The price is for an unframed photograph. 11" X 14" Edition of 25. The Robin Rice Gallery is pleased to announce, 25 Years of Polaroids, a new exhibit by Jose Picayo. The opening reception will be held Wednesday, November 7th, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The exhibit will run through January 6, 2019. In this exhibition, Picayo seeks to revive the concept of unadulterated beauty captured as a single moment in time. An unapologetic user of film, Picayo prides himself on his avoidance of digital processing for personal work. When asked why it remains his preferred medium, Picayo answers, “Digital is so overpoweringly real; photography is more magical to me.” For Picayo, Polaroid film is a medium where he can capture something as is – a moment in time. Just to hold the photograph in his hands is enough. 25 Years of Polaroids showcases Picayo’s most iconic work. This exhibit includes personal photographs of Cuba from 1994, Polaroid image transfers showcasing his impressive use of visual texture and his eye for fashion. Also included are his Atget-esque tree portraits from a New Jersey public arboretum in 2012. Additionally, a selection of 8” x 10” Polaroids from Mugshots 2008, will be included, exploring how a person’s soul can be captured in what appear to be basic photographs. The main questions at the heart of Picayo’s photography stem from the mystery of human perception and the precious things that are lost to time. The invitational image, Rotating Doll, 1997, features a multi-paneled display of polaroids which cover an entire length of a wall. These 20” x 24” Polaroids appear larger than life and were given much praise in Picayo’s recent exhibit Polaroids 2016 at The Erie Museum in Erie, PA. This series stems from a collection of children’s dolls Picayo has found over the years, each one with its own strange and authentic story to tell. By cultivating a deteriorated look reminiscent of antique fresco painting, Picayo examines time using the inanimate faces of broken dolls, reflecting on the objects we hold dear and how they fall apart as we try to hold onto them. Picayo speaks of his own influences, crediting photographers Eugène Atget, Walker Evans, and Edward Curtis, Michael Disfarmer, and Torkil Gudnason with impact on both his fine and commercial art. He is well known for his work in fashion, but for Picayo his personal and commercial work are interrelated, each extensions of one another. Born in Cuba, Picayo immigrated to Puerto Rico during his childhood and settled in New York City by the early 80s. After receiving his BFA from Parsons School of Design, Picayo began his professional career as a commercial photographer, shooting for magazines such as Vanity Fair, Sassy, Taxi, and Connoisseur. Picayo’s work has since appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, L.A. Style, New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Rolling Stone, NY Magazine, HG, and Elle Décor. Picayo has held nine solo exhibits to date at the Robin Rice Gallery. portrait, Natalie Merchant...

Ali Baby (Still Life Photograph of White Embroidered Antique Child's Dress)
By Chad Kleitsch
Located in Hudson, NY
Figurative still life photograph of a white child's dress on a white background 'Ali Baby', by Chad Kleitsch, 2011 Archival pigment print on Hahnemuhle paper, edition of 6 30 x 40 inches - unframed and unmounted Contemporary scanograph still life photograph of a baby's white dress on a white background. Light shines through the almost translucent fabric, contrasted by the gray shadows made by the folds of the dress. Also available in the following sizes (unframed and made to order): 20 x 24 inches - $1400 unframed 40 x 50 inches - $4000 unframed and unmounted About the work: Chad Kleitsch uses scanograph technology to capture his intimate subjects, be it a flower, a sheer nightgown, a child’s bib; is placed on the scanner and backlit with a high intensity light that penetrates through the object as though it were a sheet of film or slide, reproducing an effect like that of a stained-glass window. This process is also explored via Works on Paper, including a handwritten letter by Emily Dickinson, a hand addressed envelope by Mary Cole (Thomas Cole's daughter), and choreography notes by dancer Lucinda Childs...

Horse in the Celtic Sea, Penzance, Cornwall, UK, 2010
By Robin Rice
Located in Hudson, NY
Listing is for UNFRAMED print. Inquire within for framing. Edition 4 of 10 After 30 years on West 11th Street, The Robin Rice Gallery celebrates its first ever exhibition for Robin Rice. For decades, Robin has exhibited a wide variety of photographers at the gallery but never her own work. As the show’s title denotes, “It’s About Time.” The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, January 23rd from 6pm to 8pm. The exhibit runs through March 17, 2019. While her photography spans five decades and multiple continents, Rice maintains a cohesive, candid voice that carries throughout all of her work. Observing the world around her in a cinematic way, she possesses an uncanny ability to recognize and capture moments of beauty and the spontaneity of the human spirit. By evoking a wonderstruck sensibility, Rice expresses a deep-rooted love for both people and landscapes using her distinct bohemian style. In this salon-style retrospective, Rice uses an “old school” approach and shoots with her Nikon on Tri-X film. When creating her art, she insists, “the camera has a mind of its own.” The scenes captured in her photography are unedited and thus born purely from the magic of the in-camera composition. In the invitational image, “Tree Farm, Long Lane, East Hampton, NY”, 1999, a naked woman wearing nothing but a large straw hat is captured from behind, centered between a long line of trees on either side, as she bikes down the lane. In another image, “Bubbles, Piazza Rondanini, Roma”, 1995, friends linger before a vine-covered building, extending their arms up in joyful wonder, catching bubbles descending from above. Receiving her first camera at the age of 11, she has since been an avid fine art photographer. After moving from Philadelphia to New York in 1976, Rice was immediately swept up in the electrifying, fast-paced art world of the city. In 1977, Discoworld Magazine hired her to photograph the opening night of Studio 54. After enjoying 23 years of success as a commercial photographer, she shifted her career to become a gallerist, opening The Robin Rice Gallery in 1990. Curating 175 shows, Robin developed her own “school” of artists, cultivating a keen eye for curating and in doing so enriching the aesthetic of her own fine art photography. Despite devoting much of her energy to the gallery, Rice has never stopped creating her own art, and has exhibited in several galleries nationally and abroad. Influenced by photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, who curated the art of others and exhibited his own work, Rice is ready to showcase her photography on her own turf. In her spare time, Robin has recently taken up DJing: you can often find DJ Redshoes spinning vinyl at her loft in Beacon. Animal, Beach, Water, Cornwall...

Horizon Fields 5 (Minimal Landscape Photo of Blue Skies and Golden Wheat Field)
By Lependorf and Shire
Located in Hudson, NY
30 x 30 inches Limited Edition Archival Pigment Prints edition of 25 This image is part of a series of abstracted landscape and ocean views by the Philadelphia based artists called 'Horizon Fields'. This square format image is an abstracted view of clear blue skies and golden wheat fields. About the work: The foundation for our work is the photographic image with the optimal quality of light. Selecting the interplay of composition, form, rhythm, and line is the focus for our imagery. Integrating these elements in the computer is the next stage in the process of merging our visual and intuitive sensibilities toward a completed vision. Different perceptual effects arise from recording the world in photographs as opposed to interpreting it in paint: Our goal is not to emulate painting. Conceptual work in all mediums has blurred the line between photographers who make art and artists who use photography. The digital medium has established itself in the natural continuum of art history and the ongoing relationship of art with technology. This work forces us to consider a more serene world while reminding us that no contemporary experience is unmediated; technology touches everything. The use of the computer as a tool does not create; it assists creativity resulting in a synthesis of disciplines to be realized as a limited edition. The combination of archival pigment inks on Crane Fine Art paper framed with archival mattes and backboards insures permanence in excess of 175 years. The creative process will always remain in the mind and the soul of the artist. About the artists: Stan Shire is Professor Emeritus and former chair...

Cherries (Contemporary Still Life Study of Red Cherries in Light Box)
By David Halliday
Located in Hudson, NY
11.25 x 11.25 inches unframed Archival pigment print edition of 12 Some of David Halliday's most engaging works are those from his Box Series in which he merges classical ideas about light and composition or still lifes with contemporary experiments of fresh color. In this series an empty cookie tin becomes a tiny studio for food objects. Halliday carefully styles his photographic subjects inside and, allowing only natural light to seep in through a circular window. The results feel less like still lifes and more like intimate portraits of human sustenance. In these photographs, the fleshy curves of a fig, the slick bodies of sardines, even the homeliest porcini mushrooms possess a degree of nobility, providing a refreshing contrast to the compulsive relationship we so often have with food, reminding us to slow down and savor with gratitude. In this particular image, the bright red Bing cherries with their bright green stems are piled high into a silver goblet, gently brushed with the natural diffused light, echoing techniques associated with a Vermeer painting! About the work: The Past Still Present: A master of light, New Orleans photographer David Halliday produces lush and elegant images that are both classical and modern. Using window...

Barn, New Concord (A tranquil winter scene of Barn and Evergreen in Sepia)
By James Bleecker
Located in Hudson, NY
Barn, New Concord pigment print on watercolor paper Available in the following sizes: 13 x 16, edition of 25 $1500 20 x 24, edition of 25 $2500 40x50, edition of 25 $6,500 This Black and White Sepia-toned print of a barn in the snow was taken by photographer, James Bleecker. The nearly monochromatic, picturesque landscape depicts an idealistic rural scene lit beautifully by an overcast sky. Artist Statement: These photographs span the last decade of nearly four that I have worked in the Hudson River valley. While I have photographed landscapes, towns and cities, I have chosen a selection of rural scenes for this show. All are in Columbia County except “Allee,” (Tuxedo Park) and Quimby Farm (Marlborough). My photography spans four decades of living in the Hudson River Valley. While my Dutch ancestors settled here early - Bleecker and Verplanck are common place names - I don't know what, if any, pull that fact exerts. Certainly I'm attracted to the layers of time exposed here; in ancient stone walls, leaning barns, faded mansions and mill towns. The valley exudes boom and bust, love and leavings. About the Artist: James Bleecker photographs the landscapes and architecture of his native New York State. Since 1983 his work has spanned independent fine art photography and commercial architectural photography. Much of his work has been commissioned by museums and historic preservation groups in the Hudson River valley. About James’s work, Edgar Munhall, Curator Emeritus of The Frick Collection, has written, "James's work is powerful and mature. Rigorously composed and technically perfect, his photographs can reduce you to tears by their beauty." Collections: Berkshire Museum Barry Diller...

Bread House (Framed Food Still Life Photograph of Bread, Vegetables & Stones)
By David Halliday
Located in Hudson, NY
Contemporary food still life photograph of bread with assorted vegetables on a wood table Archival pigment print, ed. 9 of 25 Image size: 11 x 14 inches 17 x 21 inches with dark wood frame with non-glare glass and 8-ply white mat Halliday captures the beauty of a traditional still life with a contemporary spin. Here three loaves of bread are balanced on one another, beside blueberries, stones, squash, tomatoes, and legumes against a black background. The entwined green legumes and the bread's rough surface provides intriguing texture, while the delicately positioned white stones and blueberries lend brilliant color and shape. The contemporary still life is placed against a solid black background. The print #9 a limited edition of 25, is currently framed in a dark wood frame with non-glare glass and an 8-ply white mat. The artist's signature is located on the back and front. About the Artist: David Halliday's photographs are about beauty, pure and simple. His primary subjects are carefully composed still lifes, portraits and landscapes which he shoots in black and white film with only natural light. He is a purist behind the lens, rarely manipulating his negatives in any way, and a master in the darkroom. His work has an ethereal quality that's translated not only through the subject, but also by the warm colors and sepia tones he uses in his printing. More about the work: A master of light, David Halliday produces lush and elegant images that are both classical and modern. Celebrated for his ‘purist’ eye, he poetically captures the nude male body in a selection of sepia-toned prints from 1996. Rarely revealing the model's face, Halliday prefers to focus on the natural drape of limbs, soft folds of flawless skin, and curvature of the spine. Overall, a stunningly intimate portrayal of the male form done with elegance and charm.
