A splendid brass chair with a higher back, in the Chiavari style with ‘batwing’ gothic pattern. This particular specimen is in excellent condition, with a lovely recent restoration of the upholstery, well cushioned, in a tasteful dark green velvet. A splendid brass Chiavari style chair with elegant arched back. This particular specimen is in very good condition, with a recent restoration of the upholstery, well cushioned, in a tasteful dark green velvet. There are a couple of marks on the velvet, not stains but changes in the nap of the velvet, probably caused by stain removal. These are minor and in clean condition. Brushing the velvet to change the nap makes these largely invisible or unnoticeable. The chair is in very sound condition and is of a higher quality than others we have handled - notably the shaping of the feet and back and the strength of the frame indicate particularly good quality. The original version of the Chiavari chair was a delicate-boned creature in light-weight timber, designed to be both light and strong. It’s turned timber frame gave the opportunity for elaborate decoration which was popular in the mid to late 1800s. This brass version was created in the 1950s as a playful reference to the original, the brass emphasising the elaborate framework. This pair of painted brass chairs share something of Gio Ponti's simplicity of design and energetic expression. The lattice back and sweeping metal arms are reminiscent of Jean Royere's 'Croisillon' series, yet these chairs are unique. They are one-off items made by a Sydney engineer in the late 1950s for his patio overlooking the waters of one of Sydney's many harbour inlets. In order to prevent rust they were constructed from solid brass rod and angle, including brass screws. We love the vibrant 1950s colour scheme of Mediterranean blue and white paintwork so much, we couldn't bring ourselves to strip them. However, any new owner has this option - the brass is in excellent patinated condition under the paint. We are fascinated with the wonderfully resourceful translation of European and American design that has always influenced Australian furniture. In the mid 20th century, developments in design were usually first seen via print media in Australia, many months after their launch in the US or Europe. Thirsty design types soaked up the images in imported interiors magazines as well as local publications such as Belle and Home Beautiful throughout the 1940s, 50s and 60s. It was not always economical to import these items, so interior designers and manufacturers would often 'interpret' the designs into a uniquely Australian midcentury...
