This is really a portrait of a plane -- the Fairchild C-119. The words 'United States Air Force' on the side of the plane date it to 1947 or later, after the Air Force split from the Army. Russian-born and European-educated Alexander Kachinsky was a designer of stage sets (for the Ballet Russe), furniture, and commercial interiors. His prints are in the collection of the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian American Art museum, and the Baltimore Museum of Art. He came to this country in the 1920s.
