Salvador Dali Signed E. A. Series Les Songes Drolatiques de Pantagruel Suite

About the Item

Salvador Dali signed E. A. series les Songes Drolatiques de Pantagruel Suite Salvador Dali's untitled cooperative lithograph from his series of 25 works of Les Songes Drolatiques de Pantagruel is hand-signed in pencil by Dali and is a rare E.A. (“Epreuve d’Artiste", the French term for “artist’s proof”) limited edition of only 50 color pieces of this image on Japan paper. As this is an artist's proof, the artist is in the color experimentation stage, and as such the colors vary from the official run of lithographs offered for sale, and were intended to be for the artist' personal use and distribution. This image is referenced and pictured in Dali's catalogue raisonne by Michler and Lopsinger, plate #1418, pages 153 and 155; by Albert Field, plate #73-7H, page 173 and by Bruce Hochman's "Print Price Guide to the Graphic Works of Salvador Dali", Page 108. Salvador Dali’s interpretative series Les Songes Drôlatiques de Pantagruel was produced during the first part of the 1970s. Dali based this series of lithographs on the infamous five novels of the mid-16th century, "The Horrible and Terrifying Deeds and Words of the Very Renowned Pantagruel King of the Dipsodes, Son of the Great Giant Gargantua" by Francois Rabelais. When written, these novels were censored as obscene. Filled with crude, explicit sexual, scatological and violent content, they also featured highly educated wordplay and risque humor. As a scholar of ancient Greece, Rabelais applied his knowledge by inventing hundreds of new words in these books, some of which became part of the French language. When Dali produced the suite in the 1970s, it was the subject of much controversy and discussion, due to the graphic and disturbing nature of the subject matter. Image size: 26.5” x 19”, sheet size: 29.75” x 21”. Framed size: Approximately 43" high x 34.5" wide x 1.25" deep. Beautifully custom framed in a silver leaf transitional style frame with black matting under glass. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from our gallery. Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) was a very famous, prominent Spanish artist, known for his important role as the leader of the surrealist movement, as well as his colossal talent and fantastic, limitless imagination. He was also a seminal example of celebrity showmanship and the cult of personality, a phenomenon which dominates popular culture today. Dali was always a colorful and flamboyant presence, as well as a master of self-promotion and spectacle.
