This early 20th-century watercolour by Belgian artist Victor Wagemaekers (1876-1953) depicts a view across an open field towards several cottages. It’s an accomplished naturalistic work.
Here we see the characteristically flat farmland of the low countries. A wide view with a distant vanishing point. Note the rendering of the furthest trees in near-white as they disappear from view. And the smoke gently rising from the cottage chimneys.
Wagemaekers was a realist and sought to capture nature as it was - in a traditional style inspired by the Flemish old masters. He was part of a movement known as ‘Le Sillon’, comprised mainly of students from the Brussels Academy. This group of traditionalists were anti-impressionism and looked back towards the glory days of Flemish artistry. His naturalistic views were usually captured in the broad fields around Brussels, particularly in Grimbergen.

In October 2023 Isabel won the Evelyn Williams Drawing Award at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize. Known as the UK’s most prestigious annual open exhibition for drawing; part of the prize is a solo show at Hastings Contemporary, scheduled for 2024.
Whilst Isabel always has a tale to tell for each of her images, you may or may not choose to go on the journey with her or you may indeed have a different story, one of your own that jumps off the page at you, that that you decide to follow.

In this pastel, an alligator-like creature with an African American child's head thrashes about in the water, upsetting the tiny boat pictured at left and causing the black figure on the lower right to drown. Another female black figure, straddling the alligator's tail, attempts to save Tony, but to no avail. Two open eyes appear in the picture: the alligator seems to clutch one and the other appears on the boat's sail. The alligator holds a pice of melon in his mouth and colorful fish populate the water and sky. Alligators reference Jim Crow caricatures in which black children are chased and eaten by alligators. In Rock's own words,
'It was just another day in Paradise for the Pink Poodle People of the Everlasting Fountain of Eternal Joy.
Since every day was Paradise it was just another normal day filled with love, ecstasy and wonder.
It started slowly at first, things began to appear in paradise, strange objects that the Pink Poodle People did not know what to do with. Some had sharp edges, others were so and smelt strange, bad strange. Some things glittered and shone. Every day more of these objects would arrive in Paradise.
' If this happens every day then soon Paradise will be full of these strange objects. Some of them are nice but many are bad and smelly. One day there will be no Paradise, only bad, sharp and smelly things.'
But the Pink Poodle People did not know what to do with the objects and every day more arrived.'
