BIO
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Isabel Bishop was a leading painter and printmaker in New York City during the early and middle part of the 20th century. Her subject matter was urban life of common people in lower Manhattan, and she showed great sensitivity to individual personalities. Along with Reginald Marsh and the Soyer brothers, Bishop was an outstanding, determined realist when Abstract Expressionism was the all-prevalent style.
She spent her childhood in Detroit, Michigan, and in 1918, at age sixteen, went to New York to study illustration at the New York School of Applied Design for Women. She attended the Art Students League where Kenneth Hayes Miller and Guy Pene du Bois became major influences. Hayes inspired her to turn to the street life of New York for subject matter and insisted on fine draftsmanship. DuBois made her aware of character and personality differences.
In 1925, she turned to etching, beginning with nude studies and then turning to vignettes of everyday life. For many years she had a studio on Union Square at 14th Street, and the Square provided her with much human activity subject matter. She shared a subject interest with Reginald Marsh, and she traveled with him and Kenneth Hayes Miller in Europe in 1931 to study the Old Masters.
In 1938, she worked as a Muralist for the W.P.A., and did a mural for the U.S. Post Office in New Lexington, Ohio, and also illustrated the Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice in 1946. She was an elected Member of the National Academy of Design, a Life Member of the National Academy of Design, and had representation in New York with the Midtown Gallery.

Isabel Bishop
Isabel Bishop (March 3, 1902 – February 19, 1988) was an American painter and graphic artist. Bishop studied under Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League of New York, where she would later become an instructor. She was most notable for her scenes of everyday life in Manhattan, as a member of the loosely-defined ‘Fourteenth Street School’ of artists, grouped in that precinct. Union Square features prominently in her work, which mainly depicts female figures. Bishop’s paintings won the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, among other distinctions.

TOBACCO ROAD Mid 20th Century Realism 1940 Drawing from the Novel WPA Literary 3
10 1/2 x 6 (sight), Signed David Fredenthal lower right. Framed by Lowy.
Offered here is one of several original drawings by WPA artist David Fredenthal that were first published in the 1940 illustrated edition of the novel TOBACCO ROAD by Erskine Caldwell.
Background on the Drawing
Erskine Caldwell remarked, on seeing the work of David Fredenthal, 26-year-old painter: "That boy could draw my Tobacco Road people." A casual comment, it was enormously productive.
The young painter was just finishing a two-year Guggenhcim Fellowship, preceded by a year's study in Paris, two one-man shows at New York's Downtown Gallery, and a fellowship at the Cranbrook Academy near Detroit. He was out in Colorado Springs when he heard what Caldwell had said about him.
Fredenthal hadn't read Tobacco Road. He had not even seen the play - now breaking all records in its seventh year on Broadway. But he swapped a portrait for a second-hand Ford and headed East.
In New York he learned that Dnell, Sloan & Pearce were bringing out a deluxe edition of Tobacco Road. But he had no entrée to the publishers, and Caldwell, to his disappointment, was out of town. So he drove on to Georgia to have a look at the Tobacco Road people.
He found Dr. I. C. Caldwell, the author's father, in Wrens, Ga., going on his ministerial rounds among people like the Lesters. Fredenthal got a room from a couple who ran a 1-pump filling station...
