A watercolor and gouache study for a gallery exhibition at the Village Gallery, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii.
Ian Tremewen began showing his watercolors with Village Gallery in 1976 while living on Maui. Born in Montreal and now based in Australia, Tremewen has spent much of his life in the Caribbean and Hawaiian tropics. Tremewen's work reflects the interest he feels for light, space and shadow working in sculpture, contemporary glass and textiles. His abstract interpretation of the amorphic shapes of nature, coupled with his design and composition enable him to present his work with a view that is distinctly his own.
Artist's Statement: "As an artist, I can experiment with many aspects and combinations. I've always been fascinated by the psychedelic colours hidden in rainforests. For me, these elements invite abstraction, where a shape, along with colour and texture, defines an object. There now appears to be a refreshing openness emerging in the art world. I feel there is a freedom to stretch and explore ideas and alternatives like never before using mediums and concepts that are expanding the world of art and design.”

Linda Newman Boughton’s Baroque inspired landscape "Dream a Little Dream" captures a lush Hudson Valley forest in vivid detail. Taking four months to create, the original drawing was made entirely using the artist's favorite brand of “Rite in the Rain” waterproof blue-ink pen. Working from a photograph, Boughton employed a variation of pen strokes, combining gestural lines that serve as the drawing’s foundation, with tighter strokes to develop the sections of intricate detail. From a wild and tangled web of lines emerges identifiable forms, such as a complex root system or a bushy canopy of leaves. Jean Harney (American, 20th Century) is an artist and illustrator from Ulen, Minnesota. Harney graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash., with a major in Education and a minor in Art. After graduation, she moved to Arizona to take a teaching position. Since that time, she has taken art classes in Arizona at A.S.U., Scottsdale Community College, and privately. In the beginning, she painted in oils on canvas or masonite, then taking an interest in screen printing. Several years later she discovered acrylic paints and loved the quick drying properties of them. Eventually, she switched from painting in acrylics on canvas to painting on paper and gradually worked into painting in watercolor, which is now her medium of choice. Harney founded the Garden Art Show in 1965, which has been running yearly since that time.
