About the Item
William Beattie-Brown is a 19th century Scottish artist, and a master landscape painter using tonal color in a naturalistic style. 'Old Bobbin Mill on the Spey River' is signed and dated 1883. The nameplate on front of the frame has the artist's name, RSA, RA and dates of birth and death. RSA is the Royal Scottish Academy and RA is the Royal Academy in London, indicatIng Beattie Brown was a member or academician and exhibited in both Academies. The artist signed the painting verso, with the title of the work, Invernesshire, and the initials RSA, (Royal Scottish Academy), with Fine Arts Salon on George Street, Edinburgh label (verso).
Painted in rich shades of green/blue in the treeline and hills, the colors are reflected in the waters capturing the stillness of the evening.
William Beattie-Brown was born in Scotland in 1831 and died in 1909. This painting was painted in the time he flourished, with maturity, as an artist, aged 52.
In the opinion of Saltire Gallerie some of his finest works are underestimated. His use of tonal qualities are superb, well before the time tonal painting became popular as a way to portray evening light at dusk, creating a mood as well as a detailed natural scene.
This work by Beattie-Brown is a watercolor on artist's paper set on board, with depth of color. The watercolor is covered with glass. It is presented in the likely original 19th century frame with gilding. Both the watercolor and the frame are in overall very good condition, with some imperfections in the frame and backing board consistent with the vintage age.
The painting with the frame measures 20.25" high and 27" wide. The watercolor in the liner measures roughly 19.5" wide and 13.5" high.
This work instills a sense of quiet and peace with smooth waters and pastel skies.
