Unforgettable
Located in New York, NY
The art of Philip Wittmann is founded on signals. For him, signs serve as a bridge between abstraction, reality and writing, too. When he was 26 years old, he began painting as a hobbyist using 'pure' abstraction. However, he believed his work lacked a solid foundation upon which to grow. He discovered a book on the origins of the Chinese alphabet, which origins are essentially signs, in 2008 while taking a calligraphy class. The 26 letters of our Latin alphabet are less pictorial than the Chinese characters as we know them now. He discovered that pictorial representation is more prevalent when examining the origins of alphabets—all alphabets, in fact—because there is frequently a similarity between the sign's true meaning and what it is meant to represent. For instance, the symbol for a turtle in the original Chinese script resembles a turtle. Wittmann loves signs as they leave room for interpretation. For instance, if one writes “the sky is blue”, one will make for themself a mental representation of a blue sky, even if each one-off us will probably have some nuance in our own mental representation of that blue sky. On the other hand, a sign can...

Tree
Located in New York, NY
Olive trees and olive groves are often the main subject of Tzannes paintings. An American painter of Greek origins, Tzannes visited the Greek island of Kythera in his twenties. Since that time, the island has become the major reference of his creativity. The choice of using black and white to represent this landscape gives the mighty hundred-years old olive trees a monumental presence. The viewer is drawn into the timeless, spiritual quality of the Greek landscape. Despite the absence of color, Tzannes' mastery of drawing creates a tangible effect of the Greek light...

Animal Capers (Black Surrealist Artist)
Located in Wilton Manors, FL
Surrealist proto-Afropunk drawing by African-American artist, Roland Ayers (1932-2014). Animal Capers, ca. 1970 . Ink on illustration board, image measures 20 inches. inches; illustration panel measures 21.5 inches. Unsigned. Minor staining evident in detail photos Artist and art educator, Roland Ayers was born on July 2, 1932, the only child of Alice and Lorenzo Ayers, and grew up in the Germantown district of Philadelphia. Ayers served in the US Army (stationed in Germany) before studying at the Philadelphia College of Art (currently University of the Arts). He graduated with a BFA in Art Education, 1954. He traveled Europe 1966-67, spending time in Amsterdam and Greece in particular. During this period, he drifted away from painting to focus on linear figurative drawings of a surreal nature. His return home inaugurated the artist’s most prolific and inspired period (1968-1975). Shorty before his second major trip abroad in 1971-72 to West Africa, Ayers began to focus on African themes, and African American figures populated his work almost exclusively. In spite of Ayers’ travel and exploration of the world, he gravitated back to his beloved Germantown, a place he endowed with mythological qualities in his work and literature. His auto-biographical writing focuses on the importance of place during his childhood. Ayers’ journals meticulously document the ethnic and cultural make-up of Germantown, and tell a compelling story of class marginalization that brought together poor families despite racial differences. The distinctive look and design of Germantown inform Ayers’ visual vocabulary. It is a setting with distinctive Gothic Revival architecture and haunting natural beauty. These characteristics are translated and recur in the artist’s imagery. During his childhood, one of the only books in the Ayers household was an illustrated Bible. The images within had a profound effect on the themes and subjects that would appear in his adult work. Figures in an Ayers’ drawing often seem trapped in a narrative of loss and redemption. Powerful women loom large in the drawings: they suggest the female role models his journals record in early life. The drawings can sometimes convey a strong sense of conflict, and at other times, harmony. Nature and architecture seem to have an antagonistic relationship that is, ironically, symbiotic. A critical turning point in the artist’s career came in 1971 when he was included in the extremely controversial Whitney Museum show, Contemporary Black Artists in America. The exhibition gave Ayers an international audience and served as a calling card for introductions he would soon make in Europe. Ayers is a particularly compelling figure in a period when black artists struggled with the idea of authenticity. A questioned often asked was “Is your work too black, or not black enough?” Abstractionists were considered by some peers to be sell-outs, frauds or worse. Figurative* work was accused of being either sentimental or politically radical depending on the critical source. Ayers made the choice early on to be a figurative artist, but considered his work devoid of political content. Organizations such as Chicago’ s Afri-Cobra in the late 1960‘s asserted that the only true black art of any relevance must depict the black man and woman...

Framed abstract Persian calligraphy ink drawing/painting on paper, black & white
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
Nazanin Moghbeli's "Morghe Sahar 2" is framed in a white wood painted frame with white mat. It is wired with all hanging hardware, and is ready to install. Moghbeli is a Persian American artist with training in Persian calligraphy, miniature painting, and music. She borrows techniques from Iranian calligraphy to create abstract drawings with traditional bamboo “ghalams,” or quills. Rather than using these techniques to create religious objects as they were originally used, she explores the secular meaning of line in and of itself. She seeks the complete dissolution of words and prefers instead to create abstract images, her alternative to religious object making. The poem that is collaged into this work is a historic Iranian ballad, entitled "Morghe Sahar" (Bird of Dawn), written by Mohammad-Taqi Bahar and put to music by Morteza Neidavoud in 1921. Some consider this song to be the unofficial anthem of freedom in Iran. The lyrics describe a caged nightingale, urging her to sing with passion and break free. It has been sung in different political contexts, from the constitutional revolution of 1921 through the dictatorship of Mohammad Reza...

There is something compelling about drawings and sketches made by architects. Loose and full of life this delicious little study, made on the spot, beautifully captures the essence of place. Made during one of Patterson's early tours to India it shows the gloriously majestic Palace Museum in Udaipur, Rajasthan, which sits on the highest point overlooking Lake Pichola and the City. The delicate wash of terracottas, pinks and reds offers us the feel of sun on the old stones. Stalemate
Located in Kansas City, MO
Due to the current situation related to the Novel Coronavirus pandemic, our gallery will donate 10% of our commission from this sale to the Kansas City Artists Coalition, which has been supporting local Kansas City Artists for the past 40 years. The Kansas City Artists Coalition (KCAC), is a non-profit, artist-centered, artist-run alternative space, supporting artists at every level in their career through exhibitions, continuing education and artist studios. Artist: Joseph Broghammer Title: “Stalemate” Materials : Chalk pastel and pencil on Arches Paper Date : 2018 Dimensions : 7 x 11 ft. Omaha based artist Joseph Broghammer is as much of a storyteller as he is an artist. His one-of-a-kind pastel drawings in “Animals” are chronicles of his life. The creatures Broghammer creates are vehicles to uncover the varying characteristics of the artist’s personal identity. Hence, Broghammer’s “Animals” translates as a flowing stream of consciousness. The different birds and livestock staring back at the viewer are ornamented with iconographic symbols – small surprises along the way. These trinkets are keys to understanding the stories Broghammer is sharing. Broghammer began mastering his “dry painting” technique during his B.F.A. in Visual Art at the University of South Dakota. He graduated in 1986 and a year later went on to study his M.F.A. at the University of Wisconsin. In 2009, he studied at Creative Capital in Omaha, Nebraska. As storytellers often do, Broghammer later went on to become an educator himself, teaching at WhyArts? and becoming an Artist Assistant at Vera Mercer in Omaha – both of which he still practices at today. It’s apparent that Broghammer’s work has resonated with so many people around the world. Only a few years after his formal education, he began exhibiting his work through various International group shows in Italy, Germany, Holland, Mexico, and even Kansas City. Although Broghammer’s portraits depict downy creatures, his work is very much about the human experience. They are honest and full of life, evoking a sincere exchange between artist and viewer. “Animals” is for the animal lovers, students, teachers, collectors, writers, the young or old, and art historians alike. Sweet Gum (Contemporary Still Life, Graphic Hand-Painted Leaf on Paper)
Located in Hudson, NY
"Sweet Gum" painted by Joy Taylor in 2022 28 x 22 inches, 37 x 29 inches framed acrylic on paper Custom Frame with White Wood Molding, Window Mat and Tru Vu AR Glass Joy Taylor’s paintings transform botany into a personal vision. Her recent series on canvas, playfully titled the “Boo-K” paintings, defy traditional still life depictions that often seek to tame and order the objects of the world. On the contrary, Taylor’s subjects are never still. Her floral forms have the crisp, clean qualities of cut paper; sharp, decisive lines slice through blocks of pure pigment to create defined edges of leaves, vines and blossoms. The colors are constructed as well as the form. Her exuberant palette of oranges, blues, magenta and green echo the complimentary colors favored by the Fauvists. Color is an element in and of itself in her work. This balance of sparkling color and form is irrepressible, at times disconcerting and even dangerous in its boldness. In a series of original paintings on paper, Joy pairs down the form by focusing on a single bloom or leaf. As a specimen under a microscope, Taylor dives into the crevices and details of each leaflet on this bright green Sweet...
