This characteristic pastel portrait by Hugh Douglas Hamilton was made early in his career; it depicts precisely the kind of education, well-connected Irish sitter who fuelled his success. The Reverend Henry Dabzac was from a distinguished Huguenot family, a celebrated academic historian, Dabzac received the Donegall lectureship in 1764 and from 1785 was Librarian and Senior Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin. According to his earliest biographer, Hamilton was the son of a peruke-maker based in Crow Street, Dublin. As Anne Hodge has pointed out, this places Hamilton’s father at the heart of the city: Crow street was a narrow thoroughfare formed part of the busy warren of streets bordered by the old Houses of Parliament and Trinity College at one end, and by Dublin Castle at the other. It is perhaps telling that in this early portrait, Hamilton shows Dabzac in a splendid powdered wig and his clerical bands. In 1754 Hamilton was apprenticed to James Mannin, a ‘pattern drawer’ who two years later was appointed master of the school of ornament at the Dublin Society’s drawing school, run by Robert West. Here Hamilton took the first prize in the 1755 competition, winning a premium of £1/16/. Hamilton developed a popular and profitable method of making pastel likenesses of sitters in a distinctive oval format. Hamilton developed a technique of using a sharpened pastel to hatch shaded areas of the features and, in the case of this portrait of Dabzac, the white powdered wig, which is drawn with particular care. Tomimoto Toyohina was a much sought-after geisha (entertainer) who performed narrative ballads accompanied by the shamisen. She was one of several non-prostitute beauties, including teahouse waitresses, whom Utamaro depicted repeatedly in the early to mid 1790s. She appears here with a brush in hand, dressed and combed with simple elegance.
This composition is from a six-print series comprising half-length portraits of famous beauties (Famous beauties of Edo).
Utamaro elevated Tomimoto Toyohina to the status of one of the three most renowned beauties of her age (together with Okita and Ohisa). She was from a prominent family of musicians that provided entertainment in the Yoshiwara. Toyohina’s appeal undoubtedly was as much due to her appearance as to her skills in singing, and Utamaro’s celebration of her would have further elevated the status of an already well-known lineage.

Pamela Burns is a British painter.
Burns was born in London and now lives in Pembrokeshire. She studied at the Royal Academy Schools until 1963 and later taught at St Martins and Chelsea College of Art, London.
The technique Burns uses is engrossing and it is hard not to wonder at how these paintings are made. The marks, as if enchased, in their repeated lines, have an almost hallucinogenic quality - one is fixated by their minute scale. Some have been painstakingly created in reverse, with the background colour revealing the contrasting lines. It is a technique with its own mystery, delicately matching the mysteries of her compositions.
Burns paintings from the 1970s and '80s were inspired by the neolithic landscapes of the South West and the deep-rutted fields that lie in the shadows of the Malvern Hills, drenched in the warm greys, endlessly variant greens and deep browns of England's mud-bound cores. In particular, she looked to Maiden Castle, Dorset, and Cherhill in Wiltshire, both sites where the chalky soil had slipped to form narrow parallel ridges along the contours of the landscape.
More recently Burns paintings have recorded the changing of the tides, first in Deal, Kent and now in Pembrokeshire. Unlike most coastal painters who tend to look across the surface of the water to the far horizon, Pamela's eye is always drawn back to the shore, to the point where the land melts into the sea. Her paintings record the changing of the tides, as the shore reclaims itself from the water, the parallel striations in the silt holding within their curved lines the imprint of the waves. The tidemarks themselves become a metonym for the process of erosion, a slow revelation of the bones of the land.

In Chowdhury’s more recent works the sensory experiences of cloth, bolsters, sofas and the human body are cross-projected to produce an uncanny world of tran-substantiated tumescence and flaccidness.
Jogen Chowdhury has been widely acknowledged to be, the master of the unbroken line. Like Léger, Chowdhury has been stirred by the linear Kalighat pat tradition, but his lines are emotive and used to express and suggest the character of a person. This is done by, distorting the form without breaking the line and in the world of young, contemporary art; distortion has been Jogen Chowdhury’s most significant impact. Perhaps, because of this, a common observation of his work is that his “people” are caricatures. The person feels familiar to the viewer but it is far more individualised – the face is imaginary but the psyche or characteristics are real. The power and beauty of his technique and line is this play between the known and unknown. In Jogen Chowdhury’s work, the figure is always in the foreground, it is primary, it conveys everything. He uses colour to give volume to his figures and the fluidity of his lines bring a sensual aspect to his forms.
About the Artist and his work :
Born : Born 1939 in Daharpara Village, Faridpur, Bangladesh. Jogen Chowdhury is an eminent Indian painter and considered an important painter of 21st century India.
Family Background :
His father Pramatnath Chowdhury was a Brahmin zamindar. Both his parents took interest in art, Jogen Chowdhury’s father Pramatnath Chowdhury painted several mythological scenes from the village theatres and also sculpted various Hindu icons. Whereas his mother was an expert in Alpana drawings.
1939-47 Jogen Chowdhury lived in a village atmosphere. And after partition in 1948, the whole family shifted. Till 1951 the whole family stayed at the police department quarter of his uncle, where on the walls Jogen Chowdhury painted his first painting, 1962 Jogen Chowdhury was employed as Designer in the Handloom Board.
Education :
1955-60: Studied at the Government College of Art and Crafts, Kolkata.
1965 : He went to paris to study in Ecole des Beaux Arts, in William Hayter’s Atelier 17.
Professional Experience :
1968-72 : He worked as an Art-Designer, Madras Handloom Board, Madras.
1970 : A collection of his poems were published, titled ‘Hridoy Train Beje Othey’.
1987 : Joined Kala Bhavan , Santiniketan as a professor of painting.

A move to an eighty-acre farm in Western Michigan from Detroit suited Janet Richardson Baughman to a tee. She and her three siblings loved country life, and relished the many humorous adjustments to their new surroundings. The one-room schoolhouse she attended, for example, contrasted sharply to her earlier city school. Sports programs had been fairly sophisticated in the city. Rural sports consisted of her teacher piling everyone in her car, including the trunk, and then driving the children to another one-room schoolhouse for games. When Janet reached the sixth grade, a chapter in American history closed because all of the one-room schoolhouses were annexed by the nearest cities, but that unusual educational experience is something Janet fondly remembers.
Growing up in a family that was very artistic, it is not surprising that Janet loved drawing. She and her brothers and sisters would make Christmas decorations for the Christmas tree and had ongoing art projects all year long. Her architect father was an artist in his free time. As the children have become adults, they are all involved in artistic endeavors from carving to sculpture.
Janet's high school years were spent riding and showing her horses. "That was my life," she says. Living on the farm allowed her freedom to indulge her love of animals including the dogs that were so special to her. Active in 4H, Janet became an accomplished seamstress and an excellent cook. She took no art classes in high school although she sometimes helped her father with drafting.
Starting college with the intention of majoring in speech and drama, Janet took an art class only because it was required. She found the art classes so appealing that she took one after another. Eventually, having taken every art class offered, the university had to design independent studies for her.
With her beloved horses back on the farm, Janet discovered a new passion, and that was ceramics. First working as a waitress during college to earn income, Janet later became a Student Assistant and lived at the Ceramics Studio. As an assistant, she would make clay and glazes, fire the kiln, and assist the instructor however she could. At first, she had planned to become a high school teacher, but she was encouraged to earn her graduate degree and pursue her artistic endeavors, in addition to teaching. Janet graduated in 1975 with a BFA in Ceramics and Weaving from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, MI.
