The paper in some of these photos looks overly textured due to the sharpness of the high-res digital camera. In person, with the human eye, the paper looks reasonably smooth with out blemishes. For this fashion illustration, Georges Lepape paints a stunning abstract pattern for the subject dress that is repeated in her hair. The work represents an early use of metallic paint, with silver metallic in the dress and bronze metallic in the blouse. Lepape's highly detailed drawing becomes more evident the closer you look. It's quite amazing how deftly he rendered facial feature on such a small scale. Frank Nelson Wilcox (American, 1887-1964) Women's Corner, Along the Cuyahoga River, c. 1916 Watercolor and graphite on paper 21 x 29 inches Frank Nelson Wilcox (October 3, 1887 – April 17, 1964) was a modernist American artist and a master of watercolor. Wilcox is described as the "Dean of Cleveland School painters," though some sources give this appellation to Henry Keller or Frederick Gottwald. Wilcox was born on October 3, 1887 to Frank Nelson Wilcox, Sr. and Jessie Fremont Snow Wilcox at 61 Linwood Street in Cleveland, Ohio. His father, a prominent lawyer, died at home in 1904 shortly before Wilcox' 17th birthday. His brother, lawyer and publisher Owen N. Wilcox, was president of the Gates Legal Publishing Company or The Gates Press. His sister Ruth Wilcox was a respected librarian. In 1906 Wilcox enrolled from the Cleveland School of Art under the tutelage of Henry Keller, Louis Rorimer, and Frederick Gottwald. He also attended Keller's Berlin Heights summer school from 1909. After graduating in 1910, Wilcox traveled and studied in Europe, sometimes dropping by Académie Colarossi in the evening to sketch the model or the other students at their easels, where he was influenced by French impressionism. Wilcox was influenced by Keller's innovative watercolor techniques, and from 1910 to 1916 they experimented together with impressionism and post-impressionism. Wilcox soon developed his own signature style in the American Scene or Regionalist tradition of the early 20th century. He joined the Cleveland School of Art faculty in 1913. Among his students were Lawrence Edwin Blazey, Carl Gaertner, Paul Travis, and Charles E. Burchfield. Around this time Wilcox became associated with Cowan Pottery. In 1916 Wilcox married fellow artist Florence Bard, and they spent most of their honeymoon painting in Berlin Heights with Keller. They had one daughter, Mary. In 1918 he joined the Cleveland Society of Artists, a conservative counter to the Bohemian Kokoon Arts Club, and would later serve as its president. He also began teaching night school at the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute at this time, and taught briefly at Baldwin-Wallace College. Wilcox wrote and illustrated Ohio Indian Trails in 1933, which was favorably reviewed by the New York Times in 1934. This book was edited and reprinted in 1970 by William A. McGill. McGill also edited and reprinted Wilcox' Canals of the Old Northwest in 1969. Wilcox also wrote, illustrated, and published Weather Wisdom in 1949, a limited edition (50 copies) of twenty-four serigraphs (silk screen prints) accompanied by commentary "based upon familiar weather observations commonly made by people living in the country." Wilcox displayed over 250 works at Cleveland's annual May Show. He received numerous awards, including the Penton Medal for as The Omnibus, Paris (1920), Fish Tug on Lake Erie (1921), Blacksmith Shop (1922), and The Gravel Pit (1922). Born in Epping, England in 1893, she lived and worked predominantly in London where she became a prominent member of several British arts clubs and societies. She first learned to paint in the Impressionist style of her father, but after a brief period of formal study with Walter Sickert in 1913 she renounced formal art schooling. Throughout her career, Orovida always remained outside of any mainstream British art movements. Much to Lucien's disappointment she soon turned away from naturalistic painting and developed her own unusual style combining elements of Japanese, Chinese, Persian and Indian art. Her rejection of Impressionism, which for the Pissarro family had become a way of life, together with the simultaneous decision to drop her famous last name and simply use Orovida as a ‘nom de peintre’, reflected a deep desire for independence and distance from the weight of the family legacy. Delicate and precise drawing by Lester G. Hornby (American, 1882-1956). Several boats are depicted at Convento de Santa María de la Rábida. The drawing is highly detailed, with the confident marks of an accomplished artist. Two buildings can be see to the left hand side of the drawing - a wharf house and the La Rabida Monastery. A man tends his fishing boat and few other boats are anchored in the water, including two caravels (a small, fast Spanish or Portuguese sailing ship of the 15th–17th centuries.) The Friary of La Rábida (in full, Spanish: Convento de Santa María de la Rábida) is a Franciscan friary in the southern Spanish town of Palos de la Frontera, in the province of Huelva and the autonomous region of Andalucia. Signed "L. G. Hornby" in the lower left corner. Presented in a new grey mat with foamcore backing. Original tag from Albert Roullier Art Galleries in Chicago has been preserved on verso. Mat size: 11"H x 14"W Paper size: 10"H x 9"W Lester George Hornby (American, 1882-1956) received his early training at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Students League in New York. He then journeyed to Paris where he developed his technique further at the major art academies there. Hornby’s progress was rapid; he received his first international recognition in Paris in the prestigious Salon d’Automne of 1907. Completely captivated by Paris and the French countryside, Hornby spent most of his productive years in France, returning intermittently to America. In his later years, he played an active role as teacher and artist in the Rockport art colony. He lived there with Bertha Grover Goodrich, his last wife. They lived in Rockport, Massachusetts until his death in 1956. Together they built the "old on purpose" house using old materials to build a "new" "old" house. Lester is the one who gave the name "Motif #1" to the old fish house that has become so famous. During WWI Hornby was a war correspondent. As did most artists at the time who did illustrations in relation to the war, Hornby had to have war- related pictures approved by the government before being published. In one case the war department refused to give permission because they felt his illustration was so accurate and well done that the enemy would have access to too much information. Hornby worked in the trenches with the men and his work reflects this. At a Philadelphia exhibit of color etchings in 1909 the critic called Hornby "the foremost exponent of this branch of graphic art that America has produced.” The critic Rowland Thomas wrote in 1910 "Hornby is beyond doubt a master etcher with such power of eye and hand as our generation has hardly known before. Not since Whistler posed with the Universe on his needle point has anyone scratched on solid metal lines of such electrifying, such insolently simple conciseness as these- a new old Paris leaps transfigured and revealed for those who will glory in her." Boston critic W.H. Downes found "Hornby's etchings among the best and most artistic being done by any American, and some of the Marne set are masterpieces." A 1928 exhibit of watercolors at the Vose Gallery in Boston won a rave from critic A.J. Philpott "He has been compared to Joseph Pennell but that is not a fair comparison. Hornby is a much more versatile genius than Pennell ever was!" The sitter for this drawing, along with a huge number of Harrison Fisher’s works, is the model, turned actress, Miss Dorothy Winifred Gibson (1889-1946). She was one of the lucky ones who survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. There is an in depth biographical sketch available on Wiki. "Dorothy Winifred Gibson (1889-1946) is arguably one of the most fascinating women of the twentieth century. Her story is more than deserving of its own film or TV show and yet, if it was to ever appear on the screen, it would be in serious danger of being criticised as ‘too unbelievable’ or ‘farfetched’. But believe me, readers, everything I am about to tell you about Dorothy Gibson is true... Early Life Dorothy Winifred Gibson (originally Dorothy Winifred Brown, before her father died when she was three years old and her mother remarried), was born in New Jersey on 17 May 1889. Between 1906 and 1911 (aged 17-22), she appeared on stage as a singer and dancer in a number of theatre and vaudeville productions, and in 1909 she began modelling for Harrison Fisher, a famous commercial artist. Dorothy soon became Fisher’s favourite muse, and her image was seen regularly on postcards, merchandising products and even on the covers of magazines like Cosmopolitan. During this time, Dorothy met and married a pharmacist named George Henry Battier Jr, but the couple soon separated and were divorced by 1913. As early as 1911, Dorothy began appearing in movies, starting out as an extra but soon taking the leading roles in a series of films by Éclair Studios. Praised for her natural acting style and comedic flair, she was a huge hit – and arguably the first actress to be promoted as a star in her own right. Surviving the sinking of the RMS Titanic On 17 March 1912, after starring in a string of movies, Dorothy and her mother, Pauline, took a trip to Europe – but after a few weeks Dorothy was called back to America by the studio to start working on a new series of films. Dorothy and her mother were in Paris when they booked their tickets on the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic, and boarded at Cherbourg on 10th April. On the night the ship sank, Dorothy had ‘spent a pleasant Sunday evening playing bridge with a couple of friendly New York bankers’ (her words, in an interview with the New York Dramatic Mirror). Despite the request of a steward for them to finish, they carried on with their game and it was not until about 11:40pm that Dorothy returned to the stateroom she shared with her mother. It was at that point that she felt ‘a long drawn, sickening crunch’ and, while not exactly alarmed, she decided nonetheless to investigate. Quickly noticing that the deck was ‘lopsided’, she rushed back to her room to fetch her mother, and the pair returned to the boat deck. Dorothy and her mother escaped from the ship on the first lifeboat launched (number 7), and given how quiet it was on the boat deck at the time, she asked her bridge partners to join them. However, events took a turn for the worst when a hole was found in the bottom of the lifeboat, causing icy cold water to rush in and almost flood the boat. Luckily, though, Dorothy explained, ‘this was remedied by volunteer contributions from the lingerie of the women and the garments of men.’ It is hard for us now to imagine the terrors of that night – and the emotional damage it caused to those who survived. After the event, Dorothy told the Moving Picture World, ‘I will never forget the terrible cry that rang out from people who were thrown into the sea and others who were afraid for their loved ones.’ Unbelievably, though, Dorothy was to re-enact the experience a mere five days after it happened, when she starred in the first film about the disaster. It was a silent movie, called Saved From The Titanic, and was actually hugely successful and the first of many hit films about the sinking. In the movie, Dorothy even wore the same clothes she had been wearing when the ship sank – a white silk dress underneath a cardigan and polo coat. ABOUT THE ARTIST Albert Lorey Groll (1866-1910) was born in New York in 1866, the son of a pharmacist immigrant from Darmstadt, Germany. During his early years, he traveled to Europe to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Nicholas Gysis and Ludwig von Löfftz. He further pursued his studies in London and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium. Groll returned to New York in 1895 and moved from figure to landscape painting while expanding his interests to printmaking. In 1904 Groll made the first of several trips to the American Southwest, traveling to Arizona with ethnographer Stewart Culin of the Brooklyn Museum. Later he went to New Mexico with his friend, the artist and illustrator William Robinson Leigh (see our 1stDibs listing no. LU53239015112 ). He focused on impressionistic scenes of Native American lands. The Laguna Pueblo people admired Groll's paintings, honoring him with the name "Chief Bald Head Eagle Eye." Groll kept a studio in the Gainsborough Studios in Manhattan and won several awards for his work in Arizona and New York, including the Salmagundi Club Shaw Prize in 1904 and a gold medal at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1906. He was also awarded the George Inness gold medal from the National Academy of Design in 1912 for his painting of Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies. Nieuwenkamp, Zwerftochten op Bali, Amsterdam, 1910, p. 36 WILLEM OTTO WIJNAND NIEUWENKAMP (1874-1950) Nieuwenkamp was born on July 27th 1874 in Amsterdam. His father owned sailing ships sailing to Indonesia and hearing the stories of the returning captains evoked in the young Nieuwenkamp an obsession for distant lands and adventure. After a failed attempt by his father to have his son make a career in his business, Nieuwenkamp attended the Academy for Decorative Art in Amsterdam. However, he left within one year to go his own way. He was an autodidact and a great experimenter with new techniques, particularly in the art of etching. Nieuwenkamp was a very focused man with the discipline of a scientist tempered by the sensitivity of an artist, a lust for adventure, a natural appreciation for ethnic arts and an enormous ambition to tread new paths. In 1898 he visited Indonesia for the first time and on his second visit in 1903-1904 he went on to Bali and became the first foreign artist to love Bali and the Balinese with a passion.
