Modern Portrait Drawings and Watercolors

MODERN STYLE

The first decades of the 20th century were a period of artistic upheaval, with modern art movements including Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism and Dadaism questioning centuries of traditional views of what art should be. Using abstraction, experimental forms and interdisciplinary techniques, painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers and performance artists all pushed the boundaries of creative expression.

Major exhibitions, like the 1913 Armory Show in New York City — also known as the “International Exhibition of Modern Art,” in which works like the radically angular Nude Descending a Staircase by Marcel Duchamp caused a sensation — challenged the perspective of viewers and critics and heralded the arrival of modern art in the United States. But the movement’s revolutionary spirit took shape in the 19th century.

The Industrial Revolution, which ushered in new technology and cultural conditions across the world, transformed art from something mostly commissioned by the wealthy or the church to work that responded to personal experiences. The Impressionist style emerged in 1860s France with artists like Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne and Edgar Degas quickly painting works that captured moments of light and urban life. Around the same time in England, the Pre-Raphaelites, like Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, borrowed from late medieval and early Renaissance art to imbue their art with symbolism and modern ideas of beauty.

Emerging from this disruption of the artistic status quo, modern art went further in rejecting conventions and embracing innovation. The bold legacy of leading modern artists Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian and many others continues to inform visual culture today.

A fine, spontaneous drawing, on heavy, buff wove paper; the artist's tack holes in the top and bottom left sheet corners, minor rippling in the bottom sheet edge; otherwise in good condition. Image size 16 1/4 x 11 1/4 inches; sheet size 19 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches. Matted to museum standards, unframed. Provenance: Art Students League, from the artist’s personal portfolio. ABOUT THE ARTIST Robert Philipp (1895–1981) was a celebrated American Post-Impressionist painter known for his nudes, still lifes, and portraits. Noted art critic Henry McBride named Philipp one of America's top six painters of his generation. Philipp was an instructor of painting at the Art Students League, New York, for 33 years. Philipp was Secretary of the National Academy of Design, a National Academician, and a Benjamin Franklin Fellow at the Royal Society of Arts in London. His composition and painting style has been compared to the art of Edgar Degas and Pierre Auguste Renoir. In 1940, Philipp was invited to Los Angeles by Hollywood producer Louis B. Mayer to paint portraits of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie stars. The same year, Walter Wanger, producer of ‘The Long Voyage Home’, directed by John Ford and based on plays by Eugene O'Neill, contracted with Reeves Lewenthal, head of the Associated American Artists gallery in Manhattan, to bring nine well-known artists to the set and paint scenes from the movie and portraits of the actors in character. The artists included Robert Philipp, Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, Ernest Fiene, George Schreiber, Luis...

DANIEL ELLSBERG - PENTAGON PAPERS TRIAL - Large original Courtroom Drawing
Located in Santa Monica, CA
DAVID ROSE (1910 – 2006) RUSSO ON THE WITNESS STAND, 1973 Color marking pen and ink on tracing paper. Image 16 3/8 x 20 1/8 inches, mount 20 x 28 inches. Attached to mount as created. Original drawing from the infamous Daniel Ellsberg - Pentagon Papers Trial by important Courtroom Artist David Rose. It depicts Ellsberg at the far right and one of his attorneys, Leonard Boudin at left. Fellow Pentagon Papers defendant Anthony Russo is testifying on the stand. Provenance: Directly from the artist David Rose to this dealer in the late 1980’s. I knew David as an artist and friend as we both lived in Los Angeles. The drawing is in excellent condition with bright colors. It has been in temperature and humidity storage since its acquisition. The Ellsberg Trial was the beginning of a long career for Rose as a court reporter Rose’s papers are in Special Collections of USC, The University of Southern California. The Online Archives of California Rose Biography states: Rose's courtroom career began in 1973 with the trial of Daniel Ellsberg, the former defense analyst who released the Pentagon Papers regarding the Viet Nam War to the New York Times. (Rose received an Emmy Award nomination for his coverage of the Pentagon Papers trial.) Rose's sketches of this trial-- along with all those that would follow through the next twenty-five years-- appeared in television news broadcasts and newspapers all over the world. He saw himself as a reporter-- but with colored pencils and sketchpads as his tools. He tried to capture the emotions in the courtroom-- the tension, anger, and the body language that conveyed them. Over the years, Rose's art depicted the trials of some of the most famous-- and infamous-- personalities to make the news: Klaus Barbie (the Butcher of Lyon), Patty Hearst, Sirhan Sirhan, John Z. DeLorean, Rodney King, Imelda Marcos, Huey Newton...

Françoise GILOT (1921-2023) "Couple", circa 1950 Ink on paper Dimensions: Drawing: 50 x 65 cm (20 x 25 in.) Frame: 77 x 92 cm (30 x 36 in.) Françoise GILOT, born November 26, 1921 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, is a French painter and writer. Françoise Gilot is the daughter of Émile Gilot and Madeleine Renoult, she began studying law but, more attracted by her passion for art, followed in the footsteps of her mother, a watercolourist, and turned to drawing and the painting. In May 19431, she met Pablo Picasso, then living with Dora Maar. She was his companion from 1944 to 1953, and the mother of two of his children, Claude (1947) and Paloma (1949). Picasso, during their period of living together, represents her under the appearance of the Flower Woman, radiant and solar. In the wake of Picasso, she continues to pursue her own career as a painter. In 1964, she published Living with Picasso, a relatively intimate book on their life together, which met with enormous success and some criticism, for the time, of opportunism. This book puts Picasso in a great anger, which goes so far as to no longer want to receive his children. After her separation from Picasso, Françoise Gilot married the painter Luc Simon, with whom she had a daughter, Aurélia. In 1970, she married Dr. Jonas Salk...

Élégante à Paris by Jean-Pierre Cassigneul, work on paper, 1964
Located in London, GB
Élégante à Paris by Jean-Pierre Cassigneul (b. 1935) Oil and graphite on paper 27.5 x 22.4 cm (10 ⁷/₈ x 8 ⁷/₈ inches) Signed lower right, Cassigneul Executed in 1964 Provenance Private collection, Tokyo This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Artist biography Born in Paris on 13 July 1935, Jean-Pierre Cassigneul grew up in the exciting world of Parisian haute couture. His father, Jean Dessès (1904 – 1970), was the founder of a world-leading fashion house, designing dresses for European royalty and movie stars, among others. Surrounded and inspired by his father’s modern designs and fashion models, Cassigneul would later integrate those subjects into his vibrant yet often melancholic paintings of fashionable women in hats. Studying at the Académie Charpentier in Montparnasse, Cassigneul was soon introduced into the art scene of the neighbourhood. Notably, he made a good impression on the model and gallerist Lucy Krohg, who offered to exhibit his artworks in her own gallery. He was only seventeen when in 1952 he had his first solo exhibition at Galerie Lucy Krohg in Paris. It was in the 16th arrondissement, however, that Cassigneul met another significant figure in his life and artistic career, namely Jean Souverbie (1891-1981). As his friend and mentor, French painter Souverbie had a great influence on the young Cassigneul, introducing him to the work of artists such as Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard, also known as Les Nabis. Soon after, Cassigneul was accepted into the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he worked for the well-established artist Roger Chapelain-Midy (1904-1992) from 1956 to 1960. In 1958, the Galerie des Beaux-Arts exhibited his works, while in 1963 Cassigneul took part in the Salon de la Jeune Peinture alongside French painters Bernard...
