About the Item

Mary Fedden (British, 1915–2012) The Green Apple Pencil and watercolour Signed and dated ‘Fedden 1979’ (lower left); further signed and titled ‘Mary Fedden, The Green Apple’ (on the reverse) 21 1/5 x 29 in. (54.7 x 73.6 cm) Provenance: The New Grafton Gallery, Old Bond Street, London, 6th May 1980, catalogue #28; Sir Duncan Oppenheim This elegant watercolour by Mary Fedden, The Green Apple, exemplifies her distinctive and much-loved approach to still life. The composition balances simplicity with quiet drama: the titular green fruit placed with clarity against carefully arranged forms, rendered with the artist’s hallmark economy of line and subtle modulation of colour. The work reflects Fedden’s gift for imbuing ordinary objects with both lyricism and graphic strength. Mary Fedden studied at the Slade School of Fine Art before embarking on a career that spanned more than six decades. She became one of Britain’s most admired 20th-century painters, widely recognised for her poetic still lifes and landscapes. A teacher of note, she held posts at both the Royal College of Art and the Yehudi Menuhin School, counting among her pupils David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield. Married to the artist Julian Trevelyan, with whom she shared a Thameside studio at Durham Wharf, Fedden developed a style that fused modernist clarity with a personal sense of intimacy and warmth. Her works are held in numerous public collections, including the Tate, the Royal Academy, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. With its strong provenance, including exhibition at the New Grafton Gallery and ownership by Sir Duncan Oppenheim, The Green Apple is both a quintessential and distinguished example of Fedden’s oeuvre—an evocative balance of restraint, delicacy, and quiet authority.
