Large 3D Cast Paper Abstract Oil Monoprint Unique Monotype Painting John Walker
Located in Surfside, FL
John Walker British (b. 1939) Salsipuedes Forms (1991) Monoprint relief print with dry pigment, monotype Hand signed lower right Provenance: Garner Tullis Workshop A monotype is literally one of a kind; it is not a method of multiplication. The artist makes an image with a liquid medium on wood, metal or glass, and paper is laid over the moist image and bonded under pressure the paper is then removed bringing with it the transposed monotype. John Walker (born 1939) is an English painter and printmaker. He has been called "one of the standout abstract painters of the last 50 years." Walker studied in Birmingham at the Moseley School of Art, and later the Birmingham School of Art and Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Some of his early work was inspired by abstract expressionist art and post-painterly abstraction, and often combined apparently three-dimensional, sculptural shapes with "flatter" elements. These pieces are usually rendered in acrylic paint. In the early 1970s, Walker made a series of large...

Mixed Media

Untreated they can do great harm
By Paul Lamantia
Located in Surfside, FL
Paul LaMantia, who is often associated with the Imagists, has works in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and The Collection of Jean Dubuffet, Paris, France. Paul LaMantia is widely known in Chicago for his intense, often excoriating drawings and paintings. A student of Briggs Dyer at the School of the Art Institute in the ’60s, LaMantia was a daring and wildly inventive young artist who also attracted the attention of Jean Dubuffet, who asked him to come to Paris to swap ideas. His hallucinatory vision is inhabited by a comically disturbing mix of sinister creatures. A bird or bug-like being with multiple heads shares the stage atop a glass floor with a human/non-human creature sporting a horned helmet, a lizard type animal and other varmints. The artist insists that although these nightmarish inventions are not of the real world, they are in fact about the real world. Garish color, strong black outlines and a composition that fits the tradition of horror vacuii (fear of open space) characterize this drawing. A variety of media were utilized to execute his work. LaMantia’s rarely seen early drawings are outrageous, beautiful and disturbing. Paul LaMantia participated in these exhibits: Selections from the Permanent Collection: Made in Chicago and Chicago's Bauhaus Legacy Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) Subconscious Eye, Face Forward: The Art of the Self-Portrait Printworks Gallery. Global Blindnese, Packer Schopf Gallery Paul LaMantia has Exhibited with these artists: Alexander Archipenko, Morris Barazani, Richard Hunt, Richard Haas, Carole Harmel, Michiko Itatani...

*UK BUYERS WILL PAY AN ADDITIONAL 5% IMPORT DUTY ON TOP OF THE ABOVE PRICE The Gates (Project for Central Park, New York City) by Christo (1935-2020) Collage, pencil, enamel paint, photograph by Wolfgang Volz, wax crayon and tape 35.5 x 56 cm (14 x 22 inches) Signed and dated lower left and inscribed on the reverse, Christo 1998 Provenance Private collection, Germany This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Jonathan Henery on behalf of the Estate of Christo V. Javacheff. The Gates, Project For Central Park is probably one of the most iconic and most recognizable of Christo's projects and the works around it are amongst the most sought after by international collectors. Artisti biography Christo Javacheff was born in 1935 in Gabrova, in Communist Bulgaria. Dropping his surname, Christo studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Sofia (1953–56) before defecting to the West, via Prague, in 1957. That year, he spent one semester at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna and moved to Paris in 1958 where he met his future wife and artistic collaborator, Moroccan-born Jeanne-Claude de Guillebon (d. 2009). Indebted to Vladimir Tatlin's Constructivist edict "real materials in real space," Christo's first artworks, dating from 1958, consist of appropriated everyday objects such as bottles, cans...

Homage to Matisse
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork by noted American artist Inez Storer, b. 1933 is titled Homage to Matisse. The piece is composed of mixed media (oil paint, board, latex) with collage on board. The artwork measures 24 x 24 inches (25 x 25 inches, framed.) It is floating in a simple painted wood frame. It is hand signed in the lower right corner of the frame by the artist. The piece is in very good condition. I am estimating this work was created some time in the 1990s based on the subject and style, but that is only an educated guess. About the artist: From Inverness, California, north of San Francisco and working from a studio in Point Reyes, Inez Storer creates mixed-media narrative paintings, collages and assemblages in naive-sophisticated style, which she describes as Magic Realism: "I am a visual raconteur. I use paint to tell stories." Most of these stories are explorations of the human condition with characters who seem allegorically to be walking tightropes. She gets many ideas from her studio collection of old...

Saint John The Forerunner after a Russian Icon from the 16th Century
Located in Segovia, ES
Saint John, The Forerunner, after a Russian Icon from the 16th Century. Tempera and gold leave on gesso over a wooden board. Dimensions: (H) 33 x (W) 25,5 x (D) 4 cm. John, The Forerunner, is depicted as an ascetic desert saint with a tousled beard and a coat made from camel hair. The expression that transmits his beautiful face is very intense. This is how the artist sums up the technique used by him to create the icon: “The aim of these steps is to create a durable painting. The icon is eternal. The first step is to choose a support, traditionally made of wood, from the center of the trunk to avoid warping it. For this purpose, two hardwood bolts were often used on the back to give the picture panel additional stability. Often a frame is milled out. Then the image carrier is sanded smooth and now 12 or 14 thin layers of gesso are applied and sanded smooth as well. Then the preliminary drawing is applied and the drawing board is prepared with a special preparation called bolus. This bolus can be polished to a high gloss. Afterward, the gold leaf is "shot" with special brushes. It dries up within a few hours and can now be polished with agate. Gold leaf is real 24-carat gold . Now does the actual process of painting begins. Egg tempera is made fresh from egg yolk, water, and a little vinegar. This is used to prepare the color pigments. Tempera painting is done in numerous layers from dark to light. When the icon is finished, it is left to dry for a few months and varnished with a special varnish called Olifa made from boiled linseed oil and other ingredients”. Original media artwork by Nahum Tschacbasov composed of watercolor, felt pen, and graphite on archival paper. Signed bottom middle and dated 1977. Condition is excellent. Presently unframed. Provenance: Estate of the artist Nahum Tschacbasov. Nahum Tschacbasov Biography : Russian-American artist Nahum Tschacbasov (1899-1984) is known for his cubo-surrealistic works which feature a strong psychological element. Some of his work bears a resemblance to work of another Russian-American artist--David Burliuk. He was somewhat of a late starter, moving to Paris in 1932 to study under Adolph Gottlieb, Marcel Gromaire and Fernand Leger. He had his first exhibition in Paris in 1934. He then returned to the US where he joined Rothko and Gottlieb at the Galery Seccession. He was one of the co-founders of The Ten, a group of social conscious abstract painters which included Rothko, Gottlieb, Joseph Solman and Ilya Bolotowsky, among others. In 1944, he began to work at Stanley Hayter's Atelier 17, a center for surrealistic ideas. Between 1936 and 1943, he had five one-man exhibitions at the ACA Galleries and participated in five group shows. He also exhibited at the Whitney, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Knox Albright Museum, the Chicago Institute of Fine Art and Corcoran, among others. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Met, the Whitney, the Brooklyn Museum and the Jewish Museum. Tschacbasov has been the subject of two recent retrospective at Fletcher Gallery, Woodstock, NY and Arthur...

Mixed media is a type of art that sees artists using a range of materials or more than one medium. Find a range of mixed media paintings and other artworks for your space today on 1stDibs.

Mixed media is distinct from multimedia, which describes art involving electronic media, including video, computers and digital elements. Artists combine painting, drawing, photography and sculpture for mixed media art. Instead of sticking to one form, they aim to break boundaries and create unique pieces. Pop art is one of the vibrant periods for mixed media art, with Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg among its most fabled producers. Rauschenberg, like many mixed media artists, used found objects in his work, from cast-off furniture to newspapers.

Collage is one of the most well-known areas of mixed media. Artists use various types of paper, fabric, photographs and more to create one cohesive work. A type of collage is assemblage, which involves 3D objects.

While artists may use fabric in collage, it can be the very substance of the art itself. Fabric art makes extensive use of texture. Artists may paint or embroider on fabric to create layers of texture and color to evoke a specific feeling. They can also transfer photos onto fabric for innovative ways to display visuals.

Resin-based art has clean, sharp lines and a definitive shape. Resin is a liquid that hardens to a high-gloss surface and is used to seal wood, counters and floors. Resin can also seal artwork, and many artists tint it using pigment powder, ink, spray paint and other vivid materials. If water is added, the resin will turn milky instead of being completely transparent. It’s common for artists working in mixed media to use resin on nontraditional surfaces like glass, wood, metal and stone. This creates a shine that’s perfect to brighten a dull space in the home or office.
