A Night in Paris - Mixed Media on Paper by P. Scoppetta - 1911

A Night in Paris - Mixed Media on Paper by P. Scoppetta - 1911

By Pietro Scoppetta

Located in Roma, IT

A Night in Paris is an original decorative object realized by Pietro Scoppetta in 1911. Mixed media on paper. Hand-signed and dated on the lower left corner: Pietro Scoppetta 1911. A frame is included. Very good conditions. Very elegant, beautiful impressionistic work realized in the first years of the XX Century by the important Italian artist Pietro Scoppetta. The work is characterized by a very impressionistic stroke and touch and depicts a scene during a Parisian night. The figures of the woman in the streets are only sketched but we can feel the elegance and the beauty of the Paris during the fin du siècle. The work has been realized by Pietro Scoppetta (Amalfi, 1863 - Neaples, 1920) an Italian artist. He dedicated himself initially to architectural studies, he abandoned them to form artistically, under the guidance of Giacomo Di Chirico. Resident in Naples, he had the opportunity to live in a climate of strong movements of cultural evolution. Scoppetta decided to leave Italy for abroad, and stayed a long time in London and Paris. In Paris, where he lived between 1897 and 1903, he joined the large group of Neapolitan painters, attracted by the bourgeois suggestions of the Belle Époque, including Lionello Balestrieri...

“Headed to Market, 1916”
“Headed to Market, 1916”

“Headed to Market, 1916”

By Everett Shinn

Located in Southampton, NY

Original drawing of a woman heading to market by the well known American artist, Everett Shinn. Mixed media work created with charcoal, pastel and gouache. Signed with the artist’s initials lower right and dated 1916. Condition is very good. Under glass. Matted and in a period gold frame with restorations. Overall framed measurements are 23.5 by 17.25 inches. Provenance: A New York City estate. Everett Shinn (1876 – 1953) Everett Shinn, a realist artist associated with the Ashcan School and member of “The Eight” was born in New Jersey in 1876. After showing an aptitude for the arts as a child, at age 15, Shinn was enrolled at the Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia. He quickly moved on to classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and by the age of 17, he was working as a staff artist for the Philadelphia Press. While working at the Press, Shinn befriended fellow artists William J. Glackens, George Luks, and John Sloan. This group, with Robert Henri and Joseph Laub, established the Charcoal Club, a social and intellectual sort of alternative art school. In 1897, Shinn moved to New York City to work as an illustrator at the New York World. He became fascinated by the drama of the city. While visiting Europe in 1900, Shinn took interest in the work of the Impressionists, particularly those of Degas. Degas’ influence can be read in Shinn’s depictions of American theater. From his acquaintances in the theater world, Shinn began to paint decorative “rococo revivalist” murals in the homes of the wealthy elite. He also worked extensively in pastel, portraying the rough life of the city. In 1908, Shinn exhibited alongside his Charcoal Club associates, with the addition of Arthur B. Davies, Ernest Lawson, and Maurice Prendergast...

A pair of candlesticks in great condition - no chips or cracks - from the famous Newcomb Pottery program in New Orleans. Beautiful buff grayish-blue glaze. Newcomb mark stamped on bottom. Came from a fine St. Charles Avenue home out of the estate of Chip Flowers of New Orleans, with lots of Newcomb pottery in the collection, including a Joseph Meyer bowl we have also listed on this site. Proudly presented by Guy Lyman Fine Art, New Orleans. If you are reading this it is probably because you are already familiar with Newcomb Pottery, but here's some information from Wikipedia, and there is a wealth of information about it online should you wish to learn more: "Newcomb Pottery, also called Newcomb College Pottery, was a brand of American Arts & Crafts pottery produced from 1895 to 1940.[1] The company grew out of the pottery program at H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, the women's college now associated with Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Pottery was a contemporary of Rookwood Pottery, the Saturday Evening Girls, North Dakota pottery, Teco and Grueby. Newcomb College had been founded expressly to instruct young Southern women in liberal arts.[2] The art school opened in 1886 and production of art pottery on a for-profit basis began in 1895 under the supervision of art professors William Woodward, Ellsworth Woodward, and Mary Given Sheerer.[3][4][5] Potters Among the first persons to be hired by the Woodwards to assist with the new pottery...

We have included a photo of the marks on the bottom of the bowl: JM for Joseph Meyer, N for Newcomb, and B for pottery made between 1910 and 1912 with buff clay bodies and semi-matte glazes. Jewish ceremonial art, also known as Judaica refers to an array of objects used by Jews for ritual purposes. Both for synagogue and for home, because enhancing a mitzvah by performing it with an especially beautiful object is considered a praiseworthy way of honoring God's commandments, Judaism has a long tradition of commissioning ritual objects from craftsmen and artists. Judaism has a set of classical early rabbinic commentaries on the Hebrew Bible; these commentary collections are known as the midrash literature (Heb: midrashim). Midrash Mechilta has this teaching on a biblical verse: "This is my God and I will glorify Him" (Exodus 15:2) Is it possible for a human being to add glory to his Creator? What this really means is: I shall glorify God in the way that I perform commandments. I shall prepare a beautiful lulav, beautiful sukkah, beautiful fringes (tzitzit), and beautiful tefilin." Other Midrash teachings (e.g. Song of Songs Rabbah 1.15) offer the same idea. This idea is expanded upon in the Babylonian Talmud (e.g. Tractate Bava Kama 9b). This teaching was understood by succeeding generations as a duty, when possible, to make beautiful items used in Jewish life and worship, both physical and textual Kiddush cup: Kiddush, literally, "sanctification," is a blessing recited over wine or grape juice to sanctify the Shabbat and Jewish holidays. Kiddush cups are highly decorated, and are generally made of china, porcelain, silver, pewter and nickel. The close of the Jewish Shabbat...
