Helen Frankenthaler
Acrobat

1995

About the Item

Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) is one of the most revered abstract painters of the 20th century as well as being one of the most successful and collected female artists. Her current auction record is $7.8 million USD. Frankenthaler was a key player in the evolution of Abstract Expressionism. Elaborating on techniques made famous by Jackson Pollock, specifically pouring paint directly onto (frequently) unprimed canvas, Frankenthaler led the next major movement in American abstraction: Color Field painting. The artist was a prolific and experimental printmaker. She worked with lithography, etchings, woodcuts, and screenprints. In the late 1990's she made a series of works in ceramics including pitchers and teapots. Reimagining the artist's 1995 painting of the same name, 'Acrobat' showcases a vibrant and dynamic abstract field characterized by wandering swathes of crimson red and saffron, along with bold punctuations of cobalt and passages of tangerine. While the work is unquestionably abstract, the combination of spirited primary colors and whimsical forms results in a uniquely theatrical and lighthearted composition. Frankenthaler's work can be found in every major international collection including the MoMA (New York), the Tate (London), and the National Gallery of Art (Washington). Questions about this piece?
