About the Item

Mixed medium ,wood, acrylic paint, sculptural piece. 3D Sculpture/painting piece Hand signed and dated verso bears gallery label Bruce Robbins (born 1948) is an American abstract painter and sculptor who emerged as a prominent figure in the mid-1970s, He is also an artist and teacher with a passion for both the visual and performing arts, including puppetry. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1948, He pent a year and a half confined to a hospital bed at the age of five, where he encountered a story about a Native American riding a horse bareback, a story that inspired his fascination with freedom and movement. Graduated from the Cooper Union School of Art in New York City. Received a BFA from SUNY Purchase in 1986. Known for abstract non-objective painting and sculpture. Initial works focused on painted and constructed ladder and seesaw sculptures. By the late seventies, he moved on to create a series of post-modernist works called pilasters, which were shown at MOMA in New York, as well as the Venice Biennale's Art of the Seventies and the Rudolph Zwirner Gallery in Cologne. In the early eighties, he started making constructed paintings which, over time, developed into paintings on canvas, as well as sculpture and an extensive body of drawings. Explored themes of freedom through movement, particularly through the imagery of horses. His work often features a dualistic approach, combining additive (painterly, non-objective) and subtractive (incised lines revealing an abstract armature) elements. Subjects include horses, cities, people, courtrooms, athletes, and actors. His sculptures, sometimes called "reconstructions," are a mixture of painting and sculpture. Has developed a style that resembles Piet Mondrian with added triangle shapes. Had a studio in Port Chester, New York for six years. Was an artist-in-residence at various schools, implementing interdisciplinary projects involving puppetry. Hired by The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry as technical director of the Claudia Boettcher Theater, where he taught stagecraft, acting, video production, and puppetry. Performed puppet shows for diverse audiences, including a one-man show in Italy and Germany at puppet festivals in 1995. Currently teaches visual arts, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and puppetry, to middle school students. Operates a storefront studio in Dobbs Ferry where he develops personal creative projects and offers puppetry classes for adults. Recognition & Exhibitions: Received recognition for his art in New York and Toronto. Exhibited his work in France, Montreal, and the Calgary Stampede Artists' Studios in 2014. Galleries Throughout his career, Robbins has been affiliated with and exhibited at numerous galleries, including Parsons-Truman, Blum Helman, Rudolph Zwirner, Hans Strelow, Knoedler Zurich, Marlborough, Yoshii, Ronald Greenberg, Carol Taylor, Turske Whitney, John Berggruen, Cheryl Haines, and CristineRose Galleries. Museums His work has been shown in museums such as the Stedelijk Museum in the “Recent Acquisitions” in Amsterdam, NL in 1980, the Whitney Museum of American Art in the “Biennale” in New York City, NY in 1981, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in the “International Survey of Recent Painting and Sculpture” in New York City, NY in 1983, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in the “Art of the States: Works from a Santa Barbara Collection” in Santa Barbara, California in 1983, the Art Cologne International Kunstmarkt in the “Szene New York” in 1983, the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown in the “50 th National Exhibition” in 1986, the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, CT in the “Drawn on the Museum” in 1995,[5] the Harn Museum of Art in the “Considerations of the Figure: Magdalena Abakanowicz and Bruce Robbins” in Gainesville, FL in 1996, as well as the Neuberger Museum in the “Outside In” at The State University of New York in Purchase, New York from June-December in 2001. A group of his work is also on permanent view at the Hess Collection Museum in Napa, California. His work has received reviews in many national art magazines and newspapers. His work is included in major biennials and collected by major institutions. He had a solo exhibition in New York focusing on paintings and drawings inspired by the poem "An Elephant Crossed the Road" by Marc Straus. Born in Philadelphia, graduated from the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture in New York City. In the mid-seventies, he broke into the art scene as a new image sculptor with a series of painted and constructed ladder and seesaw sculpture. By 1979 he was producing a series of pilaster and door sculptures, which combined sculpture and painting signaling the post modernist movement. Related to Memphis Milano, Peter Shire, Ettore Sottsass, Gaetano Pesce and post modernism. Over the last two decades he has continued with his interest in structure and painting using architecture as a common theme. During the mid-nineties he produced a series of works called the Berlin windows, which is on permanent display. In recent years, he has developed a series of paintings with buildings and primary shelters as his subject matter, as well as a series of painted and constructed sculptures called Walls, which serve as a meditation on painting and sculpture. Zigi Ben-Haim (born 1945 in Baghdad, Iraq) is an Iraqi-American-Israeli painter, collage artist and sculptor who lives and works in New York City and Israel. Ben-Haim unveiled his sculpture, Treasure the Green, in SoHo on Broadway. The project was sponsored by the SoHo Broadway Initiative and the New York Department of Transportation's Art Program. The sculpture is considered to be the first sculpture to receive permission to be installed on a bus bulb on Broadway. The sculpture was made to "emphasize the importance of nature in our lives," and stands as a reminder of "the importance of reconnecting with the pure nature of the green." The sculpture uses the symbol of the leaf, which has been a major icon of Ben-Haim's work for the past 30 years. It symbolizes nature and it is a metaphoric way of emphasizing nature and the surrounding environment. He is of the first generation of Israeli artists to develop large international followings like Yaacov Agam, Menashe Kadishman and Avigdor Arikha. Ben-Haim has received numerous grants and awards, including from Pollock-Krasner Foundation, National Endowments for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Emily Harvey Foundation Venice, Muestra Int. de Obra Grafica (Spain), and the Ministry of Culture in Israel. Yuval Shaul, (Israeli, Born 1961) Hand signed Large Scale Mural Abstract Mixed Media Oil Painting on Board Framed in Artist's Metal (welded steel or iron) frame. Measures 54.5 X 75 inches Yuval Shaul was born 1961 in Tel Aviv, Israel, He is one of the most important artists in Israel, Yuval graduated from the Avni Institute, Tel Aviv with Art Studies in 1988 as-well as studying under Zvi Millstein Studio in 1984. In the exhibition 'New Abstract' Shaul presented colorful, abstract paintings that interact with each other and creating dynamic compositions. Shaul works as an alchemist who uses oil paints mixed with industrial metal paints, thinners, and more materials to creates his dynamic compositions by lifting the papers in different directions and propping them up on various stands so that the colors mix, drip, run and eventually settle. This painting process emphasizes Shaul's individual painting, which he calls "painting in action / in motion". This bears the influence of the Pattern and Decoration movement artists such as Brad Davis, Mary Grigoriadis, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Kim MacConnel, Sonya Rapoport, Miriam Schapiro and Valerie Jaudon.
