About the Item
Oil on Canvas by Carlos Carnero.
He was friend and pupil of Fernard Léger and friend of the most important artist of his time, such as Picasso and Matisse. This is from his abstract period. made in 1961. Signed low at right and on the back. Not framed.
Carlos Carnero (1922-1980) est né à Montevideo (Uruguay).
De 1939 à 1941 il suit les cours de l’école préparatoire d’architecture de Montevideo, et intègre la Faculté d’architecture de Montevideo en 1941, dont il sort diplômé en 1946, section peinture et gravure.
Il obtient une bourse de voyage d’étude en 1947 qui lui permet de se rendre en Italie, en Espagne et en France.
Il suit un stage dans l’atelier d’André Lhote en 1948, et entre à l’académie Fernand Léger en 1949.
De 1949 à 1955, il est l’assistant collaborateur de Fernand Léger, tandis qu’il poursuit son activité personnelle de peintre, au style proche de Fernand Léger.
Il sera secrétaire de l’atelier Léger et cofondera le musée Léger de Biot après le décès du maître.
Il enseigne à l’école Camondo jusqu’à la fin de l’année 1979.

Carlos Carnero
Carlos Carnero, a native of Montevideo, emigrated to Paris and joined Fernand Léger's studio workshop at the end of the 1940s. Located on the Boulevard de Clichy, the workshop-school had around 75 students. In the workshop, Carlos Carnero, was noted for his talent and involvement. In addition to providing an art education, Léger entrusted the task of secretariat of the workshop to Carlos, which involved movements of the stocks, inventory paintings and material organization of exhibitions. The head of the workshop, Nadia Khodasievich, was a brilliant painter and the first pupil of Malevich, then of Leger in the mid-1920s. She became the assistant, then the mistress, and, then, his wife, in 1952.
