About the Item
Chris Anderson, Small Clocks (2006), mixed media, acrylic, pastel painting and drawing.
Timepieces by American artist Chris Anderson consists of a series of mixed-media paintings on paper. The metaphor for each image is a clock, with a small square signifying the “hand” rotating around the perimeter. Anderson actually sets the time when she begins each piece, then engrosses herself in the process of experimentation with materials, patterns, textures and color relationships.
The artist writes, “These paintings appear as abstractions at first glance, but they are for me a very real visual diary… Each piece recalls the place in which I made the work, the world outside my studio, the time of day, the light, the sounds, and my own state of mind and heart – both spiritually and emotionally.” At 29.5" x 41.5" each, the paintings would allow extensive compositional detail, but Anderson manages to keep each one simple and streamlined. The Timepiece Series was shown at the Elaine Baker Gallery in Boca Raton, Florida and the Wexler Gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For over a decade, the art of painter Chris Anderson has addressed the theme of American cultural traditions and life in the contemporary home and neighborhood. Anderson studied visual art in Italy, at the Tyler School of Art in Rome, in New York at the Pratt Institute of Art, and in California, at Scripps College (BA, 1971) and the Claremont Graduate University (MFA, 1973). The artist has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including fellowship grants from The National Endowment for the Arts (Painting), New York Foundation for the Arts (Painting), Artists Space (Artist's Grant), Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation (Painting), New York State Council on the Arts (CAPS Grant), and many research and scholarship awards, including several from The City University of New York and The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (Fulbright). From 1996 to 2000, Anderson lived and worked as a Fulbright Senior Scholar in the Arts in Berlin. The Fulbright Commission awarded her a lecturing/research grant as the only visual artist among over a hundred grantees under its auspices in Germany in 1996-97 and a renewal in 1997-98 as the first grantee in five years to receive the Honorary Fulbright Senior Scholar Award. As a Fulbright Guest Professor she taught "Experimental Painting and Drawing" for graduate and undergraduate students at The Berlin University of the Arts. In Germany the artist created over three hundred paintings for solo exhibitions at Amerika Haus Berlin, the 10. Internationalen Kunstforum at Eichhofen Palace, the Max-Planck Institut, and Galerie Dorow im Kunsthof Berlin [catalogue]. Anderson has been the recipient of residency fellowship awards from foundations here and abroad: Yaddo, Austrian Chancellery of Art, Edward F. Albee Foundation, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus, The MacDowell Colony, Deutsche Burgenvereinigung (German Castles Association, Marksburg Castle), Millay Colony, and the Fieldstead Company for work in Italy on "The Florence Portfolio", a body of prints now in the collections of the Vatican, the Armand Hammer Museum at UCLA, and over twenty university, corporate, and private collections. In 2003, she received an Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Studio Center Award and in 2006, a renewal from the EFASC. Most recently, she was awarded a grant from the Fieldstead Foundation for work in Austria, England, and Scotland. She has lectured as a guest artist for numerous art institutions, including the Columbia University Graduate Department of Art, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of New Mexico Albuquerque, Smith College, University of Notre Dame (Pew Charitable Trust/CIVA Graduate Symposium), Fine Arts Academy of Nuremberg, Germany — and she has taught studio art on the faculties of Skidmore College, The University of Maryland, Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute of Art Manhattan, Regent College in Vancouver, Canada, and Gordon College in Orvieto, Italy, among others. The work of Chris Anderson has been shown extensively here and abroad and may be found in over fifty public and corporate collections. A selective list of exhibitions would include the following: The Art Institute of Chicago; Kebble-Villa Museum, Germany; American Embassy, Moscow; Bilbao International Exhibition Centre, Spain; Muscarelle Museum of Art; Butler Institute; The Washington Gallery; Exit Art; Artists Space; The Society of the Four Arts of Palm Beach; Laguna Beach Museum; and The Rockefeller Arts Center; and Istituto San Lodovico in Palazzo Ranieri, Orvieto, Italy. Selections from the artist's "Family Stories Series" were shown in 2003 at Phillips' Pury & Luxemburg Galleries in Chelsea in "On and Off the Wall", the New York Foundation for the Arts Painting Fellows' Exhibition curated by William Stover of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Her work was also shown at the Sato Museum in Tokyo, Japan, in "Considering Peace", a group exhibition sponsored by the International Arts Movement to benefit UNESCO. In July 2004, a solo exhibition of Chris' new work was held at Schloss Mittersill in Austria. In 2005, Chris was curated into the Corcoran Gallery of Art's benefit exhibition, "Select III, Washington Project for the Arts," in Washington, DC. With work created in residence at The Wayfarer's Trust in Freswick Castle, Caithness, Scotland, she opened two solo exhibitions, "At the Back of the North Wind," at The Faculty School of Music, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, and Catherine College, University of Oxford, Oxford, England. Most recently, in 2006, Chris exhibited in solo shows of "Family Stories" at Wexler Gallery, Philadelphia, and "Timepieces" at Bellevue Gallery, Vancouver, BC, Canada. Chris now lives in Lower Manhattan and works in her studio at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in New York City's Garment District.

The exhibition with catalogue, celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the exchange between the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and the Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus, was sponsored by BMW in cooperation with the cities of Schwandorf and Regensburg, Germany.
From 2010 through 2013, Chris worked on The Farmer Archives, a photograph, sound, drawing, and painting installation project based on the American farm and changing rural landscape of middle America. She has interviewed, recorded, and photographed the oldest living farmers, ages 80 to 103 years, within a 160-mile radius of the geographical midpoint of the lower continental United States (latitude 39 degrees, 50 minutes, and longitude 98 degrees, 35 minutes). The exact midpoint of America is located in the middle of a hog farm 4.6 miles from a stop in the road called Lebanon, Kansas; the farmer moved the sign to keep the tourists off his land. The project participants are the great-great grandchildren of the nineteenth-century settlers who migrated west with the promise of free federal land, typically 160 acres or a "quarter-section," beginning with Abraham Lincoln's Homestead Act of 1862. Born before the Dust Bowl and Depression, these remarkable Americans lived through the era of the horse-drawn plow to tell their personal stories of life-and-death hardships, daily struggles for survival, and the simple pleasures of a childhood on an early twentieth-century farm.
At present Chris is working on a new body of drawings and paintings reconfiguring art historical imagery of the Madonna and Child. The artist lives and works in New York City.

Fils I Colors DCXIII - Contemporary Colorful Abstract Mixed Media Painting
By Raul de la Torre
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Barcelona native artist Raul de la Torre's vibrant abstract mixed media artworks pay homage to textiles. De La Torre allows the materials to take over during the process and collaborates with the unexpected to create works that speak to the natures of dynamism and unity. Experimentation with different materials, textures and techniques in each of his paintings has been a point of discovery and a major part of Raul de la Torre’s work. In his Fils I Colors series he attempts to find the third dimension through the use of different materials.
This colorful 30-inch high by 24-inch wide original artwork on canvas is wired and ready to hang. The sides of this artwork are painted white and it does not require framing. It is signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and worldwide shipping. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included.
The interaction between the artist, gravity, and the paint is important for the final result. A tilting technique permits the paint to be a major architect of the final result, giving it a life of its own. It results in infinite and timeless color combinations. In many cases, the different layers of color each represent a temporary state of mind, time, and even feelings, places and people. Some of them are embroidered forever in our memory turning to form part of our DNA. To represent the firmness and strength of that past the cotton is mixed with the paint in the works to form a unity.
Embroidery provides another layer as it creates thick shadows with organic shapes. De la Torre makes horizontal cuts on the canvas and covers these open areas using color matching cotton thread. When combined with light, these shapes create a more dynamic surface and offer different views of the work to various observers.
Raul de la Torre was born in Barcelona in 1964 and attended Massana Art School. About the Fils series, de la Torre remarks: “FILS I COLORS is an attempt to find life, movement and parts that are not static, that change in their interaction with the observer. The different combinations of colors represent different emotions and interpretations for each individual interacting with the works.”
Raul de la Torre's artworks can be found in the collections of The Four Seasons Abu Dhabi, the Tropicana Hotel and Casino Las Vegas, the Rothschild Family Collection, and varying Hilton properties. His works have been exhibited and collected worldwide.
Artspace Warehouse has been representing and exhibiting Raul de la Torre's original artworks since 2010.
