About the Item

"Plutonium Messenger" Symbolic Visionary Art in Acrylic on Canvas Detailed symbolic work by Dana Lynn Andersen (American, b. 1962). This piece is a stylized version of the astrological symbol for Pluto. It appears as if the planet has been integrated into the symbol, floating in space. There are other symbols inscribed into the paint. The addition of glitter and iridescent paint creates a mystical shimmer. According to the artist, "The symbol for Pluto is a charged constellation, a conduit for the Plutonium energies of transformation." Titled and signed on verso: Plutonium Messenger Dana Lynn Andersen Canvas size: 24"H x 24"W No frame, but the edges are painted for a frameless display. Dana Lynn Andersen (American, b. 1962) is a multimedia artist, writer, playwright and teacher who has taught and exhibited on three continents. She received her bachelor’s degree Phi Beta Kappa cum laude in philosophy from Colorado College, and her Master’s Degree in the Study of Consciousness from John F. Kennedy University. Andersen has shown at venues such as the California Institute of Integral Studies and the Institute of Noetic Sciences (where she was artist in residence). Her artwork has been featured on the covers of books and journals internationally. Andersen’s paintings are vibrant and luminous, scintillating with a sense of permeating intelligence. Often cosmic in scope, sweeping panoramas of color and energy express the granduer of the universe and simultaneously employ its oceanic vastness to convey the mysterious depths of interior realms. Her large- scale paintings (such as “Autumn in the Garden of Eden” spanning 24 feet) are stunning in their power and breadth of vision. Works such as “Emissary” are impregnated with numinous symbols emanating messages from an ancient future. In the ‘Atomic Frequency’ series, she makes use of reflective metalic surfaces to convey the electric spark of energy in the whirling dervish particle dance of atomic and electronic realms. - Dana & Gaia with Hindustan TimesIn works such as “The Divine Vision” (commissioned by Swami Kriyananda for the cover of his masterwork ‘The Essence of the Bhagavad Gita’) she brings fresh expression to enduring spiritual truths. Dana is also the founding director of Awakening Arts Academy with centers near Portland Oregon and Assisi Italy. Acclaimed for her pioneering use of art and creativity as vehicles for shifting consciousness she has offered her unique programs internationally- at schools & universities, conferences, civic centers, and through her Awakening Arts Studios. In 1986 she founded her first “Transformative Arts Studio” (HeartCore Studio Berkeley, California) – a nexus for the pioneering integration of Art and Spirituality. In subsequent studios (Tree of Life Studio Denver, Colorado) and at Ananda Village (Nevada City, California) she created studio laboratories for awakening higher consciousness through creative process. In 2002 she founded “Awakening Arts”, conjoining artists committed to the creation of art that is inspiring and uplifting. In 2009 she began teaching abroad, establishing The Academy of Art, Creativity & Consciousness near Assisi, Italy in 2010. In 2012 she expanded the Academy to the Ananda Laurelwood campus near Portland, Oregon. She continues to offer workshops and retreats internationally as well as a Certification Program in Transformative Arts through the Academy in both Italy and Oregon. Suzanne Benton, Rescue, 2020, oil on board, Spiritualism
By Suzanne Benton
Located in Darien, CT
In this ninth decade of life, and as a working artist for nearly70 years, Suzanne Benton has become interested in the concept of Late Style as described by the literary theorist Edward Said. “Each of us can supply evidence of late works, which crown a lifetime of aesthetic endeavor,” Matisse had it with his renowned paper cuts. While nearly blind, Monet created the water lily paintings as his final legacy to the history of art.  Benton's Late Style arrived as a surprise during the Covid pandemic. The resultant aloneness from sheltering in place brought her to an uncanny level of solitude that only painting could voice. She reached for the purest of colors, and entered a celebratory world to create the Neo-Transcendental paintings titled All About Color. The disappeared narrative came as a surprise. It had been the mainstay of the masks and mask tale performances, monoprints and paintings. This time though, the artist needed to bring a vibrancy to canvas, and to make tangible this sense of sheer essence that had pressed into her inner self in that time of stillness. Well educated in color by John Ferren, the abstract expressionist painter who’d taught the year’s color study at Queen College. The sensitivity developed further through four lengthy art-working journeys to India, starting in 1976-77, continuing with a 1992-1993 Fulbright, and additional South Asia residencies in 1995, and 2011. Those and others in Africa brought an ever more attuned palette to decades of monoprints with Chine collé that featured imagery from world culture, as well as her Americana of 19th and 20th century women writers, educators, suffragists, and feminists. These Late Style artworks explore the cosmic realm. Its deceptive simplicity reminds Benton of Buffie Johnson’s late work. She, an early celebrator of Great Goddess imagery turned to circles in her latter years. similarly, Benton had drawn on rich Goddess imagery since the 1970’s...
