Artist's Statement: "I was working on my "Gridish" paintings (you can find them in a search on the term "Gridish" on this site) when I became fascinated with certain materials I was working with - a new type of super-flat, super-black paint; powdered graphite; and iron oxide pigment. I had a small canvas ready to go, and shifted my attention to concentrating on just one of the rectangular forms I had been using in the Gridish series, and applying these materials in a way that pleased me. The edges here I find particularly appealing. But that sort of industrial sheen on the surface of the rectangle is really beautiful to me. So far this is a one-off painting; we'll see if my interest sticks, as I tend to be capricious. Quite obviously the mood given off by this painting is greatly different from the colorful Gridish paintings that spawned it. My daughter, studying design at RISD, said she found the pic of it I sent her gloomy. For some reason I don't; I just like the beauty of the materials, and I find the painting more elegant and sophisticated than depressing."

Artist’s Statement: “As I often do, I chose a very simple form to work with in this series of paintings – a grid of rectangles. It was some Sean Scully forms I was thinking of when I started these. Content never interests me much, and I don’t spend time thinking about it. I’m interested in the balance of assonant and dissonant colors, line quality, texture and impasto, push and pull, these sorts of issues. Making the paintings is a series of minute decisions about addition and subtraction that goes on for a long time, even if the result looks deceptively simple. It’s never simple to do. These have been selling here in New Orleans before I have been able to list them, so I have been pulling out select ones to show only online, so that collectors of my work elsewhere and new folks get a chance to see them."
“Lyman’s work evolves restlessly, with the common elements generally being deft and unusual color choices that balance assonance and dissonance, and vestiges of the hand and facture purposely left in the paintings. The negative space is often so meticulously worked that it’s almost as if the objects – usually simple shapes – are there as much to complement the background as vice versa. Despite the often bold colors there is an elegance about his paintings that prevents them from being either loud or decorative. "

G. Campbell Lyman
G. Campbell Lyman is a prolific collector of works by lesser heralded artists and an accomplished abstract painter in his own right. Lyman’s own abstract paintings and watercolors comprise repeating patterns of irregular circles, rectangles, whorls and cellular forms painted with thick brushstrokes in vivacious hues.
Lyman grew up in New Orleans, where he started collecting and making his art as a teenager. When he was around 30 years old, he began traveling to discover and sell undervalued art, living in various places in the United States and Europe.
Eventually, he returned to New Orleans and opened Guy Lyman Fine Art on the city’s famous Magazine Street. He operated the gallery for several years before moving his business entirely online in the late 2010s. Lyman divides his inventory into four sections: 19th- and early 20th-century art, modern and contemporary art, New Orleans and Louisiana art, and finally, his own creations.
Lyman cites "painterly" painters like Robert Rauschenberg, Sean Scully, Cy Twombly and Julian Schnabel — as well as movements such as Pop art and Abstract Expressionism — as having influenced his work. He is less concerned about the forms on the canvas and more about the paint’s texture, color and line, as well as the negative space around it. He appreciates and creates art that shows the presence of the artist's hand.
Lyman's work is held in art collections from California and Aspen to London and Beirut. He strives to keep his prices affordable for a broader demographic of collectors.

Artist's statement:
"Separate from the tar paintings I have been doing, I am creating a series of work in which I am channeling some of the things I have always loved about Cy Twombly along with qualities of a painting I saw in a local collection by a Cuban painter that I really admired and have thought about a lot since. Of course both share a graffiti quality; Twombly was the first to work with a sort of automatic drawing, beginning in the 1950s, and what he did opened up this new language for countless painters. You still see traces of it in so much contemporary art. Antoni Tapies has been a big influence on me as well, and you can see some of him in this work as well. I limited the color palette in this one as a sort of exercise in discipline, since it is easy to let color get away from you in a painting like this one. There are areas of three-dimensional paint that help flatten the picture plane and restrict the eye from reading depth into the painting; they function in the same way as Barnett Newman's 'zips' and Susan Rothenberg's lines across some of her horse images...
