About the Item
Artist's Statement: "I had been making some very colorful paintings based on rings or circles that have been very well received, but my forms and brushstrokes began to tighten and feel a little restrained. So I decided to change both the forms and the strokes, and lose a lot of the color, and do something different for awhile. I stayed with simple forms as in general I am much more interested in surface and color anyway. I had been looking at the work of Philip Guston and a Gary Komarin, and their looseness and unselfconsciousness, and used them as a touchpoint to launch from. Also borrowed the concept of not painting out to the edges from Guston (Joan Mitchell and some others did this too), which renders the area of paint a sort of object separate from the canvas surface. I used house paint in addition to the usual artists acrylics in order to achieve the flatness I was looking for. Sometime you just can't beat cheap paint. I use professional, sturdy 1.5" stretchers that have a nice deep profile and presence on the wall."

G. Campbell Lyman
G. Campbell Lyman is a prolific collector of works by lesser heralded artists and an accomplished abstract painter in his own right. Lyman’s own abstract paintings and watercolors comprise repeating patterns of irregular circles, rectangles, whorls and cellular forms painted with thick brushstrokes in vivacious hues.
Lyman grew up in New Orleans, where he started collecting and making his art as a teenager. When he was around 30 years old, he began traveling to discover and sell undervalued art, living in various places in the United States and Europe.
Eventually, he returned to New Orleans and opened Guy Lyman Fine Art on the city’s famous Magazine Street. He operated the gallery for several years before moving his business entirely online in the late 2010s. Lyman divides his inventory into four sections: 19th- and early 20th-century art, modern and contemporary art, New Orleans and Louisiana art, and finally, his own creations.
Lyman cites "painterly" painters like Robert Rauschenberg, Sean Scully, Cy Twombly and Julian Schnabel — as well as movements such as Pop art and Abstract Expressionism — as having influenced his work. He is less concerned about the forms on the canvas and more about the paint’s texture, color and line, as well as the negative space around it. He appreciates and creates art that shows the presence of the artist's hand.
Lyman's work is held in art collections from California and Aspen to London and Beirut. He strives to keep his prices affordable for a broader demographic of collectors.

"This series of intensely colorful paintings was begun a couple of years back in reaction to the gray oppressive weight that had descended like a pall on the American scene. I wanted to make paintings about nothing but pure delight, in honor of the fact that beneath the fog of germs and political antagonism, we still eat, laugh, love and if we're wise, acknowledge how spectacularly fortunate we are -- at least for now, in this time and place, despite the problems. For me, the colors, forms and brushstrokes here feel exuberant without suggesting an unnerving chaos. I have purposely used unlikely color combinations that despite their dissonance seem to work together.
