Study for Spring Sweep, 1964
Oil, oil stick, charcoal, gouache painting on paper
Hand signed, dated and annotated with the names of the colors in graphite pencil on the front
This is a unique work
Frame included: elegantly matted and framed in a museum quality dark blue wood frame with UV plexiglass
This 1964 hard edge painting on paper is a study for "Spring Sweep" - an important monumental (82" high) Howard Mehring painting, originally in the collection of the former Corcoran curator and CEO Vincent Melzac. The larger work was exhibited at the Washington, D.C., Corcoran Gallery of Art, Vincent Melzac Collection, December 18, 1970-January 24, 1971, Washington, D.C., Corcoran Gallery of Art, Howard Mehring: A Retrospective, December 10, 1977-January 22, 1978. [exhibition catalogue pp. 52 and 63, no. 38 (illustrated)] The present study is signed, dated, and in fact annotated with the names of the colors - ochre and siena. It is made of oil, oilstick, charcoal and gouache on paper. A rare find.
Mehring was once regarded as one of the "premier painters" of the Washington Color School, and has been credited as being a major influence on artists like Thomas Downing, Sam Gilliam and Gene Davis - but he died at the young age of only 47, so there are simply not that many of his works available on the market today.
Measurements:

Howard Mehring (1931-1978) was a leading Washington DC Color painter. Curator Walter Hopps, asserted: “Mehring was the closest painter to Morris Louis in delicacy… [his work is] simultaneously delicate and bold, a rare combination also present in Jackson Pollock’s work.” Gene Davis identified Mehring as “one of the premier painters” of the Washington Color School, explaining: “In many ways he was the most lyrical of us all.” Mehring’s artistic innovations influenced the works of Gene Davis, Thomas Downing, Alma Thomas and Sam Gilliam. Permanent collections include: Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Museum of Modern Art; Whitney Museum of Modern Art, The Tate Gallery, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; National Gallery of Art; Los Angeles County Museum; San Francisco Museum of Art.

Jack Youngerman Biography
Jack Youngerman was born in St. Louis, Missouri on March 25, 1926. He moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 1929 and studied at the University of Missouri, Columbia from 1944 to 1946 under a wartime navy training program. He graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 1947 and, that same year, he returned to Missouri to finish his Bachelor’s degree in Journalism before moving to Paris on a G.I. scholarship.
In Paris, Youngerman enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, studying drawing with Jean Souverbie. He explored Paris, taking in the cathedrals, museums, and history in order to grasp a greater sense of art history. He also traveled to the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Italy, and Greece on fine art excursions.
In 1948, Youngerman became friends with Ellsworth Kelly, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Cesar – fellow students at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He married Delphine Seyrig in 1950, and later that year he had his first group exhibition at Galerie Maeght in Paris. He visited the studios of Constantín Brancusi and Jean Arp and became heavily influenced by the organic forms present in their work. He also met artist Alexander Calder through his father-in-law, Henri Seyrig, and experimental filmmaker and artist, Robert Breer...

"Second Theme" 1949 Abstract Mid 20th Century Geometric Non-Objective Hard Edge
Burgoyne A. Diller (American, 1906-1965) "Second Theme" 1949. Pencil and crayon on paper. Signed and dated 'D. 49' (lower right). Image: 9 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. Andre Emmerich Gallery, New York. BURGOYNE DILLER (1906-1965) Recognized as the first American painter to embrace the tenets of Neo-Plasticism, Burgoyne Diller made an important contribution to the development of non-objective art in the United States. Working in a hard-edged geometric style, he produced paintings, drawings, and collages that paved the way for the development of American Minimalism during the 1960s and 70s.
Born in New York City in 1906, Diller began painting and drawing as a teenager growing up in Battle Creek, Michigan. Later, while attending Michigan State University in East Lansing on an athletic scholarship, he made weekend visits to the Art Institute of Chicago, where he familiarized himself with Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting. He was especially drawn to the landscapes and still lives of Paul Cézanne, who modeled color to create structure and volume.
In 1929, Diller moved to Manhattan and enrolled at the Art Students League, where his teachers included such progressive-minded painters as Jan Matulka, Hans Hofmann, and George Grosz. Hofmann's concept of the "push-pull" effect of form and color exerted a strong influence on his early work, as did his growing familiarity with Analytical and Synthetic Cubism, German Expressionism, and other vanguard European styles. Diller had the opportunity to see some of this work firsthand, but he also kept abreast of developments abroad by reading journals such as Cahiers d'Art.
Diller completed his studies at the League in 1933, the year he had his first solo exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in New York. It was around this time that his paintings began to show the influence of the reductive, pared-down geometric compositions of the Dutch Constructivist Piet Mondrian and the equally restrained compositions of Kasimir Malevich and El Lissitsky...
