About the Item
Abstract Velvety Black strokes he is known for by Julius Wasserstein (American, 1924-1985). Monogram initials "JW" bottom right. Intialed "JW" lower right corner and signed "Julius Wasserstein,"dated early 1960s" on verso in pencil. This piece exhibits the beginnings of his large black velvety brush strokes. Unframed. Oil on artists paper and cardboard. Image size, 30"H x 24"W.
Post War California artist, Julius Wasserstein studied at the California School of Fine Art (now San Francisco Art Institute) 1950-53 and the San Francisco State College, 1955-58. Wasserstein taught at the San Francisco Art Institute 1960-63 and was the recipient of San Francisco Art Association Nellie Sullivan Award in 1961.

Julius Wasserstein
Postwar California artist Julius Wasserstein studied at the California School of Fine Art (now San Francisco Art Institute), 1950–53 and the San Francisco State College, 1955–58. Wasserstein taught at the San Francisco Art Institute 1960–63 and was the recipient of the San Francisco Art Association Nellie Sullivan Award in 1961. His work is held in public collections including the Oakland Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Bay Area artist and art educator Michael Pauker was born in New York in 1957 and knew he wanted to be an artist from the age of 15. He earned a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts at SUNY Purchase in his native state of New York. In 1989 he went on to earn an M.F.A at Mills College in Oakland and was awarded the City of Oakland Artist Fellowship in Painting. He has been a Bay Area resident since 1988. His work has been exhibited widely across the U.S., as well as in Japan and Costa Rica, and is included in the collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
