MODERNIST ABSTRACT Mid-Century New Hope Non-Objective oil American Modern WPA Louis Stone (1902-1984) "Abstract," 16 X 12 inches. Oil on canvas, signed lower right. An abstract painter, Louis Stone settled in Lambertville, New Jersey from 1935. He studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and at the Pennsylvania Academy with Daniel Garber. He was also a student at the Art Students League and in Munich with Hans Hofmann. From 1927 to 1933, he traveled with his wife in Europe and for a period rented Cezanne’s studio. In France, he became friends with Marsden Hartley. Stone was on the WPA mural project.
