About the Item
Marina Savashynskaya’s paintings are nature-based abstractions, composed through harmonious movement, material improvisation and layers of translucent color. The paintings bare resemblance to elements in nature while simultaneously departing from literal representations. Each painting seeks a level of reservation as well as an embrace of the unforeseeable. Her relationship with painting is very physical. The artist’s process is to manipulate the surface of each piece, granting the work a sculptural quality. Moving around the painting, positioning themselves to direct paint flow from specific angles. The process lends itself to the build-up of layers, capturing traces of time and movement. The practice is both seductive and uncertain. Fluid media is sensitive to its environment; a deep breath, a slight shift of focus, a sound in the distance all impact the process, causing the marks to sway from their predetermined path.
Marina Savashynskaya was born in Minsk, Belarus and moved to the United States when she was nine years old. Savashynskaya studied business and art at Columbus State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art in 2016. She currently lives and works in Charleston, SC.

Marina Dunbar
Marina Savashynskaya Dunbar is inspired by the works of Paul Jenkins and Morris Louis. She was born in Minsk, Belarus and moved to the United States when she was nine. Based in Charleston, South Carolina, Dunbar graduated with a bachelor's degree in fine arts from Columbus State University. Her relationship with her medium is very physical. The surface of a painting is bent, manipulated and twisted to guide the paint, granting the process a sculptural quality. Through simple gestures of pouring and removing paint, gravity shapes the lines and forms. Her paintings are abstract but the sequential application of color grants her work a narrative component. The beginning and the end can be seen simultaneously. Initial shapes recede into space as they are enveloped by veils of subsequent colors. Marks hovering on top are the finish line. Each emerging form is a response to the last; a visual conversation. Sometimes the result is an echo of contours, at other times it’s a chorus of contradicting movements and marks. The spirit of Dunbar’s paintings fluctuates between improvised movement and controlled intention. Her work is included in many public and private collections.

Kurt Herrmann’s paintings explore his fascination with the language of color and the power it evokes universally and subjectively. To Herrmann, it is not necessarily about the color, but rather how the viewer feels in response to a particular color. His Color Bomb paintings are a sort of playground or vessel for colors to interact and resonate in a similar way to how music is heard. In this new body of work, Herrmann’s visual vocabulary shifts as elements from the Appalachian Mountains (where he resides) begin to emerge, such as the landscape, animals, seasons, and even sounds.
Kurt Herrmann resides in the mountains of Lock Haven, PA and obtained a BFA from Lock Haven University.
