In Ro Barragan's latest work we explore a production of typographic posters that seeks to highlight the multiplicity of meanings in everyday messages. Words meet, bifurcate, overlap, amalgamate and juxtapose in speeches and the context of communications. It is in this complex multiplicity, that manifests itself in a printed text, which also functions as an image. The material used is the same as the one historically used in urban advertising posters: the work is developed by using typographic printing methods, with mobile types of wood, in typographic families dating back to the last century. The works of art are printed on sulfite paper of various sizes. This piece comes displayed on a black contemporary frame under glass.

The machines of the early 20th century and manual presses of various sizes are used for printing, which still works in historical workshops in Argentina – Pucará printing shop in La Tablada - and in the Ilusión Gráfica workshop, owned by Ro Barragán, where it is sought to continue the tradition and the typographic trade, linking its production with artistic practices.
Ro holds a Master in Aesthetics and Art Theory by the National University of La Plata, all while developing artistic activities since 1994. She has participated in collective and individual exhibitions in Painting, Engraving, Objects, Digital Art, Installations and Interactive Art, in Buenos Aires and other cities of Argentina, Bogotá, Rome, and Miami. She also has developed art activities in the context of the street, through stickers and posters. She is a Teacher of the Engraving and Complementary Printed Art Workshop at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the National University of La Plata and a teacher of the typography workshop at the Museo de Calcos y Escultura comparada Ernesto de la Cárcova, city of Buenos Aires. Richard Royce was born in New York on August 18, 1941.
After getting his BA and MA in fine art at the University of Wisconsin, Richard went to France to study with Stanley W. Hayter, (the father of modern printmaking). On returning to the US he opened a studio where he produced etchings, cast paper, paintings and sculptural commissions of his own work while at the same time helping other artists including Roy Lichtenstein, Larry Rivers, Marisol, George Segal, Raphael Soyer, Francoise Gilot and Jim Rosenquist to realize works in various media.

The material used is the same as the one historically used in urban advertising posters: the work is developed by using typographic printing methods, with mobile types of wood, in typographic families dating back to the last century. The machines of the early 20th century and manual presses of various sizes are used for printing, which still works in historical workshops in Argentina – Pucará printing shop in La Tablada - and in the Ilusión Gráfica workshop, owned by Ro Barragán, where it is sought to continue the tradition and the typographic trade, linking its production with artistic practices.
Ro holds a Master in Aesthetics and Art Theory by the National University of La Plata, all while developing artistic activities since 1994. She has participated in collective and individual exhibitions in Painting, Engraving, Objects, Digital Art, Installations and Interactive Art, in Buenos Aires and other cities of Argentina, Bogotá, Rome, and Miami. She also has developed art activities in the context of the street, through stickers and posters. She is a Teacher of the Engraving and Complementary Printed Art Workshop at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the National University of La Plata and a teacher of the typography workshop at the Museo de Calcos y Escultura comparada Ernesto de la Cárcova, city of Buenos Aires. The discipline of creating a drawing each day is a process, like a written diary, to clear the mind, to declutter thoughts, and to observe patterns. It is a method that allows the mind a freedom to wander and drift. A visual journal becomes a safe space for personal reflection–a self-awareness
fueled by the opportunity for contemplation and immersion.
The painted surface for the drawings was created by dividing five large paintings into 40 separate pieces. I chose five paintings from my Perspective Series (1993-94), which relied on day-to-day imagery that narrated a story about shifting time and how time anchors our day. The
brush strokes of Perspectives are fluid, with muted colors – moving from deep blacks to taupe whites. Dividing these pieces was a means for me to rethink ideas and recurring images in my older work.
The very thin gold leaf applied to each piece has a wonderful amber tone. This gold leaf is from Myanmar, where it is used as decoration for Buddha or for the dome of a temple or monastery. In the drawings, the gold element relates to the sense of infinity – like the sky in an enclosed courtyard.
An architectural element is a critical component in my studio work that I wanted to carry over into these pieces. I envisioned a courtyard–a safe space that opens up to the sky. Unfolding circles define the beginnings of an open interior space. The process felt open-ended. It was an opportunity to get lost in thought and to give me an opportunity to reflect, muse and declutter my thinking. Then repeat. 40 days...

These energetic prints are digital copies of original handmade monoprints by photographer Birgit Blyth. Without the use of a camera, the artist produced the original chromoskedasic image by painting with the photographic chemicals directly onto black and white photo pager and exposing it to light. The rich black, faded gold, and crisp white tones are determined by the different chemicals used and the amount of time they are exposed to light. In this piece, Blyth painted gestural, intersecting lines to create a grid-like pattern that falls back in space.
About the artist and work:
Birgit Blyth is one of our most innovative and prolific photographers who works in a darkroom yet uses no camera! Blyth has been experimenting with a technique known as Chromoskedasic painting since the early ‘90s and variations on this concept have been shown at the gallery for the last 20 years. The unusual process involves the use of silver particles in black and white photographic paper to scatter light at different wavelengths when exposed. A chemist of sorts, Blyth demonstrates a thorough knowledge of how the various photographic chemicals will react when applied to paper and exposed. Each work is unique with palettes that resonate brilliant tonalities of brown, green, black, and purple. Using this technique, Blyth creates abstract crosshatching grids and most recently has developed a more gestural series of 20 x 16 inch chromoskedasic paintings that explores the ethereal qualities made possible by the unconventional material. Birgit Blyth succeeds at keeping her work fresh and cutting-edge using analog methods that are being quickly replaced elsewhere with digital technology.
