About the Item

Mercedes Elena González, (Venezuelan, 1952-), Neurohilados Large abstract with calligraphy Acrylic on canvas, Hand signed Dated 1999 verso Dimensions 54" h x 80 3/4" w (including frame) Provenance: From an Argentine estate Mercedes Elena González is an artist from Caracas, Venezuela. She has worked on various multimedia art pieces that incorporate lines, shapes, and colors to showcase modern abstraction. Mercedes Elena González was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1952. In the years 1974 to 1976, she attended a school in her hometown known as Taller Teresa Azara. Following her attendance there, González continued her studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts until 1980. González has been exhibiting her work since 1975, when she was awarded second place of the Premio Plástica Joven. Two years later, in 1977, she had her first solo show of drawings, at the Sala Mendoza in Caracas. González produced a series of drawings whose titles, such as Vulvosa or Mitosis, and abstract forms hint at the biological process of reproduction. In 2001 she presented her series Entretejimiento, whose title is a portmanteau combining the Spanish words for "weave," "interweave," and "entertainment." The sculpture series Neurohilados (2002) touched on aspects of sewing, biology, psychology, medicine, astronomy, and geography. González's works from 2012 to 2014, specifically her abstract paintings and works on paper, reference in clever ways the height of Venezuela's modernism in the 1950s. For instance, in her series Integral (2012), she manipulates the covers of the architecture magazine Integral from September 1950 by adding dark, ominous shapes that distort the geometric harmony that once proclaimed Venezuela as a center of modernism in the Americas. Her acknowledgment of this moment in the history of her country is meant to evoke the sense of disappointment felt by Venezuelans over the failure of the modernist project. The overlay of her forms superimposed over the magazine's modernist design reminds one of artistic genres such as op art and kinetic art, in which Venezuelan artists have also excelled. Among the awards that González has received are the Premio Armando Reverón at the Salón Michelena (2002) and the Gran Premio at the Salón Nacional de Arte Aragua (2001). Her work is included in national and international private collections as well as in museums and institutions, such as the Banco Mercantil and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Caracas and Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation in Miami. In her series, September 1955, González portrays art that was inspired by a Venezuelan magazine called Integral. The name itself is derived from the specific month and year that Integral showcased modern abstraction as a new form of art. González uses her drawing as means to explore the hopefulness that modern abstraction brought to youth during the 1950s, along with the political obstacles that have slowly ruined the countries well-being. She is from the contemporary art generation of Venezuela which includes art luminaries such as Mario Abreu, Milton Becerra, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Alejandro Otero, Jesús Rafael Soto and Oswaldo Vigas. She comes from a generation in which modernism was not popular in Latin America. Her series reflects on her personal realization of what Venezuela has come to be, through the use of abstract art. Her woman centred art was inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe, an artist who also sparked controversy. She lives and works in her native city of Caracas. She has been in numerous shows at the prestigious Henrique Faria Gallery in New York including Folding: Line, Space & Body/ Latin American Women Artists Working Around Abstraction in 2015 along with Ana Mercedes Hoyos, Feliza Bursztyn, Gego, Liliana Porter, Mercedes Pardo, Valerie Brathwaite and more And in the 2018 show, Radical Women Latin American Art, 1960–1985 Brooklyn Museum of Art. By Rigoberto Mena
Located in Surfside, FL
"Grey". Oil/Acrylic on Canvas. Signature lower right Image: 39.5" x 39.5". Framed: 41" x 41". Rigoberto Mena Santana (Cuban, born 1961) was born in Artemisia, Havana in 1961, where he currently lives and works. He attended the Instituto Politecnico de Diseno Industrial, La Habana, and continued his studies at San Alejandro Fine Art Academy, Havana. He traveled extensively throughout Europe to study the great masters. Mena has had Solo Exhibitions in China, Germany, Netherlands, Mexico, Cuba, Spain, France, and Holland, and in the U.S. in Miami, Massachusetts, Washington, D.C, and California. Following the inauguration of his exhibition “Hablando en Lenguas”. In 2011, Rigoberto’s work was chosen to be a part of the permanent collection of the National Museum of Fine Art in Havana, Cuba. Through the eyes of an abstract expressionist, he draws inspiration from his home’s urban landscapes and the spirit of the people and the city. The start of the Cuban Abstract movement was through a group called Los Once or The eleven. Though Mena was not an original member the influence by this new outlet began to spread ideals that put his own practice into fashion. Rigoberto is considered an important painter of his generation. He is one of the few artists in Cuba who has to have a private art gallery. Mena's private gallery at the Plaza de Armas is adjacent to the neighboring government art gallery. His work has been exhibited in Mexico, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, and Holland. Contemporaneous with the controversial, "La Generacion de los 80s" - The 80s Generation of Contemporary Cuban Art also referred to as New Cuban Art. This new Cuban plastic arts movement, with an expression of conceptual and non specific conscience manifestation, addressed many burning issues of the time and unveiled what these artists felt was the true reality of Cuba. It was more than a moment of artistic inspiration; it was a reflection of critical self-awareness and the new social role of art - the fundamental essence of the movement. They included Rubén Torres Llorca, Jose Bedia Valdes, Ricardo Rodriguez Brey, Juan Francisco Elso, Rogelio López Marín (Gory), Gustavo Pérez Monzón, José Manuel Fors, Leandro Soto Ortiz, Israel León, Tomás Sánchez and Carlos Alfonzo. In the second half of the decade, other artistic groups were formed, including 4 x 4, Grupo Hexágono, Arte Calle, Grupo Provisional, the duet René Francisco Rodríguez and Eduardo Ponjuán González and ABTV. Grupo Puré, another new wave of young artists, graduates of the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) included Ana Albertina Delgado Álvarez, Adriano Buergo, Ciro Quintana, Ermi Taño and Lázaro Saavedra, all greatly influenced by the German Kitsch art movement. Additionally, a large number of talented creators excelled independently, such as Florencio Gelabert (sculptor), Arturo Cuenca Sigarreta, Rigoberto Mena, Humberto Castro, Gustavo Acosta, Kcho, Antonio Eligio Fernandez (Tonel), Adriano Buergo, Flavio Garciandía, Tania Bruguera, Juan Francisco Elso, Carlos Rodríguez Cárdenas, Quisqueya Henríquez, Glexis Novoa, José Toirac, Carlos García, Heriberto Mora, Segundo Planes and Pedro Vizcaíno, among others. Abstract Mixed Media Painting. Oil on Silver Lame Screen Fabric
By Izhar Patkin
Located in Surfside, FL
Internationally celebrated, Israel-born artist Izhar Patkin has lived in the United States since 1977, first coming to prominence in the mid-1980s with his iconic Black Paintings, an inventive visual adaptation of Jean Genet's play The Blacks: A Clown Show. As a painter and sculptor, Patkin works in a narrative form, often drawing upon historical and cultural material to make complex visual metaphors. He imaginatively uses materials to achieve novel effects. For an exhibition in 1994 at Holly Solomon Gallery in New York City Patkin included six paintings depicting man’s expulsion from the primal garden. In his works on paper exploring the history of the Mendelssohn family, a Jewish family in Berlin around 1769 well-known for their cultural and artistic contributions, Patkin developed a trademark technique of stenciling, cutting, weaving, folding, and bending the paper. Patkin's major mid-career museum survey "The Wandering Veil," was shown at MASS MoCA in North Adams, the Tel Aviv Museum, and The Open Museum in Tefen, Ireland. His work has been included in exhibitions at Centre Pompidou, The Stedelijk Museum, MoMA PS1, Kustverein Stuttgart, among others. His work was also featured in the 1990 Venice Biennale and the 1987 Whitney Biennial. Large Modernist Abstract Painting (1of 2 available)
By Gregg Robinson
Located in Surfside, FL
Gregg Robinson, American (born 1948) "Cipher Bar 20" Oil on Canvasboard Panel. Artist signed, title and dated 1990 far right. Very minor rubbing to paint. Panel measures 15-1/4" H x 63-1/2" W, frame measures 24-1/4" H x 72-1/4" GREGG ROBINSON The universe of visual art encompasses a huge spectrum of motivation and means of expression. Examples range from the most syrupy sentimentality to extremes of moral and intellectual confrontation. For me, the creative process is, on the simplest level, an aesthetic puzzle. Elements of the puzzle include contrast, color, visual texture, graphic pattern, and in some recent work, a simple cryptic symbolism. I have never been particularly interested in lyric or pictorial content, and though some of my work does contain undeniable spatial illusion, even that tends to be a by-product rather than a goal of the primary pursuit: the balance of light and dark, pure color and organic neutrals, energy and calm, strong pattern and subtle field. Having grown up in an environment of contemporary architecture, I have always valued the classic modern synthesis of form and function exemplified by the Bauhaus movement of the early 20th century. Hence, the simplest solutions are often the most satisfying. Obviously, the modernist ideal of efficiency in form and function requires that method of execution be as well adapted to the aesthetic goal as the visual language itself. The media before you is the result of many years of experimentation that came to its current form in early 1992. I work with dry pigment over a plaster surface. My tools are broad knives, sponges, rags and masking. The finish is a high gloss alkyd resin. CORPORATE COLLECTIONS: Allstate Insurance NBC Productions Alaska...

Canadian Modernist Abstract Expressionist Painting Color Field Claude Vermette
By Claude Vermette
Located in Surfside, FL
Claude Vermette R.C.A. is a Canadian ceramist and painter who was born in Montreal, Quebec, August 10, 1930 and who died in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, April 21, 2006. Artist of international reputation, he made important contributions to the ceramic arts in Canada As a ceramist who worked in the architecture field, Claude Vermette is a pioneer in Québec and in Canada with regards to this type of artistic expression. The bursts of colours of his ceramics, the warmth of their hues and the play of their textures brought a human dimension in architectural spaces that were often grey and frigid. In his abstract paintings as well as in his prints and watercolours, Claude Vermette pursued this bold approach while constantly renewing and expanding the possibilities of colour and light. His work works with gradations of color field and shifting light. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Claude Vermette studied art under the guidance of Brother Jerome, c.s.c. at Notre-Dame College while also attending the Collège Saint-Laurent and the college of the Clercs de Saint-Viateur for his academic studies. Through his contact with Brother Jerome, he met Paul-Emile Borduas and joined the Automatiste group of emerging artists. They were influenced by Surrealism and its theory of automatism. Members included Marcel Barbeau, Roger Fauteux, Claude Gauvreau, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Pierre Gauvreau, Fernand Leduc, Jean-Paul Mousseau, Marcelle Ferron and Françoise Sullivan...
