This piece has a jewel toned stained glass quality to it.
The artist Richard Hennessy creates pictorial space as a complex and contradictory entity. The colorful ground uses alternately concave and convex forms and negative space to indicate overlapping geometric shapes. He works in oil painting, acrylic, watercolor and mixed media.
Richard Hennessy, 1972. Born in Rochester, NY, in 1941, Hennessy began as a gifted concert pianist studying at the Eastman School of Music from 1954-1959. He went on to study art history at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, from 1963-66, after which he began his career as a fine artist. His early paintings were quickly admired and supported by Henry Geldzahler, curator of Modern Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His first exhibition was in 1969 at Olivier Bernier Inc. NYC, followed in 1970 by a show at the Tibor De Nagy Gallery, also in NYC. Over the years he has shown in San Francisco, Indiana, Arizona, Florida, and at other prominent NYC galleries including Robert Miller, Hamilton, John Good and a retrospective at NYU’s Grey Gallery. Aaron Copeland, America’s foremost composer, and John Ashberry, America’s premier poet, were early champions of his work. He is in NYC collections of the Brooklyn, Metropolitan, Guggenheim and Whitney Museums, as well as the Copland Manor house in Cortland NY, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo and many others. He has been the recipient of grants from the Pollock Krasner Foundation and the Ann & Erlo Van Waveron Foundations. Art critic Roberta Smith called his work “ironic, lyrical abstraction.” Critic Christopher Scott: “Hennessy has, unlike many modern artists, not ignored the history of art, and his works are enriched by the paintings, sculptures, buildings, decorative arts, photographs, films, music and literature that he immersed himself in. He has harnessed the power of his talent and intelligence for artistic purposes leading to virtuoso maximalist. He has applied this intelligence with the same adventurousness of spirit visible in the early abstractions of Hans Hofmann and Willem de Kooning, spontaneous yet precise.”

GREGG ROBINSON
The universe of visual art encompasses a huge spectrum of motivation and means of expression. Examples range from the most syrupy sentimentality to extremes of moral and intellectual confrontation. For me, the creative process is, on the simplest level, an aesthetic puzzle. Elements of the puzzle include contrast, color, visual texture, graphic pattern, and in some recent work, a simple cryptic symbolism.
I have never been particularly interested in lyric or pictorial content, and though some of my work does contain undeniable spatial illusion, even that tends to be a by-product rather than a goal of the primary pursuit: the balance of light and dark, pure color and organic neutrals, energy and calm, strong pattern and subtle field. Having grown up in an environment of contemporary architecture, I have always valued the classic modern synthesis of form and function exemplified by the Bauhaus movement of the early 20th century. Hence, the simplest solutions are often the most satisfying. Obviously, the modernist ideal of efficiency in form and function requires that method of execution be as well adapted to the aesthetic goal as the visual language itself.
The media before you is the result of many years of experimentation that came to its current form in early 1992. I work with dry pigment over a plaster surface. My tools are broad knives, sponges, rags and masking. The finish is a high gloss alkyd resin.

Large Colorful Modernist Pastel Abstract Expressionist Painting Sylvia Carewe
Located in Surfside, FL
Framed 33 X 45.5 image is 29 X 41.5
Hand signed lower left
Signed and titled verso
Sylvia Carewe (1906-1981) was an American woman artist, painter, writer and poet.
Born in New York City to Russian immigrant parents, Louis and Esther Kerewsky, she changed her surname to "Carewe" in 1930. Carewe attended Columbia University and studied further with Yasuo Kuniyoshi at Atelier 17 in New York, with Hans Hoffman in New York and Provincetown, Massachusetts, and at the New School for Social Research.
During World War II Carewe worked as an advertising copywriter and artist for agencies in New York. She became a prolific abstract artist in a range of media, including tapestry designs for the Aubusson tapestry carpet company in France, felt banners, collage reliefs, and what she termed "blown paintings," which were assemblages (predominantly of children's toy components) overlaid with spray paint. One of the most common subjects in her semi abstract paintings was New York City at night. She also worked in traditional artistic media, including watercolors, oils, lithographs and pastels. In October 1944, she married Marvin Small (formerly Smalheiser, executive for Carter's Little Liver Pills). They had one child, John Marvin, in June 1947.
Carewe had her first one-woman show in Poughkeepsie in 1947, after which she opened in New York City at the ACA Gallery in 1948. She had some twenty other American solo shows and her works hung in many exhibits across the United States as well as in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Her works are represented in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum, Musée de l'Arte Moderne, Paris, Brandeis University, the Butler Art Institute, Howard University, the Tel Aviv Museum and the National Museum in Djakarta, Indonesia. Her work has been described by French critics as "violent, colorful art, in hard contrasts, not exempt from cold lyricism." ["Les Girls...
