Taro Yamamoto was involved in the Abstract Expressionist movement in New York City throughout the 1950s. Born in Hollywood, California in 1919, he was sent to Japan at age eight to receive a traditional Japanese upbringing. His lineage traced back to a long line of Shinto priests. While pursuing his education, he began painting, and by high school, he resolved to dedicate his life to art. He returned to the United States in 1936, where he commenced his studies in cubism at Los Angeles City College. In 1941, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and served during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to California and continued his studies at Santa Monica City College. In 1949, Glenn Wessel, a disciple of Hans Hofmann, persuaded him to relocate to New York, where he enrolled in the Art Students League in 1950. There, he collaborated with Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Vaclav Vytlacil, Byron Brown, Reginald Marsh, and Morris Kantor. He secured a four-year scholarship to the Hans Hofmann school in New York, and in 1952, he received a John Sloan Fellowship from the Art Students League. The following year, he traveled to Europe on an Edward G. MacDowell Traveling Fellowship and studied in Stuttgart, Germany with Willy Baumeister. He also showcased his work at Gallerie Huit in Paris. In 1954, Yamamoto was invited to a residency at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. During this time, he worked alongside Stuart Davis, Milton Avery, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko, refining a distinct abstract expressionist style. Later in his career, he focused on hard-edge painting.
Yamamoto had an extensive exhibition career including the Stable Gallery, Art Students League, Krasner Gallery, Westerly Gallery and Riverside Museum in New York; the Provincetown Art Association & Museum, Guild Hall in Easthampton, Miami Museum of Modern Art, the Dayton Art Institute, the University of Minnesota, Wellfleet Art Studio, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Parrish Art Museum in Southampton along with many others.

Taro Yamamoto
Taro Yamamoto was a member of the New York Abstract Expressionist School. Born in California in 1919, he returned to Japan until the age of 19 to receive a traditional Japanese education. Already exhibiting great promise as an artist at a young age, he enrolled in Los Angeles City College upon his return. He served in the Second World War from 1941–46, after which he continued his art studies at Santa Monica College and then, New York City. It was at the famous Art Students League in New York that Yamamoto had the opportunity to study with Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Morris Kantor, Vaclav Vytlacil and Byron Browne. His talent was well-recognized as he was awarded a scholarship to the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in 1952 and a traveling fellowship to Europe in 1953. Yamamoto eventually settled with his wife and son in the art colony of Wellfleet on Cape Cod where he died in 1994. During Yamamoto's most prolific period in the 50s and early 60s he had solo exhibitions at the Gallerie Huit in Paris, the Art Students League and Krasner Gallery in New York and Gallery 371 in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

A visionary painter with ties to the avant-garde artistic community in New York at midcentury, William Scharf nevertheless defies art historical categorization. His abstracted compositions of organic and geometric formal elements recall the free associations of Surrealism and the all-over grandeur of Abstract Expressionism, and at the same time embody a very individual and immediately recognizable pictorial sense. Scharf combines virtuoso paint handling, vibrant color, and rich symbolic language in canvases that engage the viewer in a transcendent and emotional dialogue. This dialogue is accomplished in part through recurring symbols, which allude to hidden, mysterious narratives. Scharf plumbs the psychological wells of collective myths for symbolic content: the crown of thorns, the ladder, the fish, and the cross can be found throughout, functioning not, as one might expect, as religious symbols, but rather as a means through which to access a deeper, symbolic level of visual communication.
