About the Item
Outstanding abstract watercolor by Emil Bisttram signed lower right.
Painting measures: 20 x 15 inches. Frame size: 27 3/4"h x 23 1/4"w.
In excellent condition and beautifully framed.
Born in Hungary Emil James Bisttram (1895-1976), studied at the National Academy of Design, Cooper Union and the New York School of Fine and Applied Art in New York City. He later became an instructor at the New York School.
In 1930, Bisttram visited Taos, New Mexico for the first time, but found he was blocked from painting by the “grandeur of the scenery and the limitless space.” Instead, he went to Mexico to study fresco painting with Diego Rivera, becoming influenced by the strong realism and sculptured surfaces.
One year later, Bisttram returned to Taos, and established the Taos School of Art. His work at the time remained realistic. In the mid-1930s, Bisttram painted under the WPA. By 1938 he founded the Transcendental movement in New Mexico as he turned toward non-objectivity, where paintings were composed of universal, rather than physical, forms. Bisttram did not limit himself to a non-objective style, however, but also painted realistic subjects.
Known as a modern Taos painter, Transcendentalist, muralist and teacher, with murals in Taos, New Mexico, Texas and Washington DC, Bisttram passed away in 1976 in Taos.

Impressive watercolor by California Abstract Impressionist, Robert McChesney (1913-2008).
The painting is in excellent condition and measures 21 x 15 inches. The frame is 31 x 24.
A label is seen on the verso with the title: "Investigators," and "From the Okinawa Series #47."
Signed lower right. McChesney was a wonderful painter and this work is from his best period in my opinion.
Post-War California artist, Robert Pearson McChesney became an Abstract Expressionist painter, assemblage artist, printmaker, sculptor and teacher. He was born in Marshall, Missouri, and with the exception of a year in Mexico, 1951, and World War II military service aboard a ship, he spent his career in California where he moved in 1936. He lived and had his studio north of San Francisco in Petaluma, atop Sonoma Mountain...

Clif McChesney, Abstract Expressionist, Watercolor
Located in Detroit, MI
The 16 in x 23 in watercolor displays striking and colorful qualities that influenced abstract expressionism for decades to come. In 2016 the Dennos Museum in Traverse City, Michigan, in homage to the very first exhibition in the Zimmerman Sculpture Court, installed the first two paintings by the former Michigan State University painting professor, Clif McChesney (1929-2011) on the Court walls, and the glass artistry of Dale Chihuly, featuring works from the Dennos Collection. In 1991, an exhibition of Dale Chihuly glass...
