About the Item

Charming 19th century oil painting on heavy board by renowned genre artist Arthur Charles Dodd (fl 1878-1891). Child with geese and hunting dog in bucolic landscape, titled 'Routing the Enemy', as the geese chase the dog away. Signed by the artist in lower left corner, and set in original liner with stenciled title in newer frame. Contrasting colors, white geese and dark late afternoon shadows, are masterfully done, just as the clouds are both white and deep purple/blue. The light both shines brightly and casts deep shadows across the board. A hallmark of Impressionism is the changing light, and this work fits well with that period. Dodd's work is represented in the British Museum and has been exhibited in the Royal Academy, especially in the 1880s, the likely period of this work during the time the artist flourished. The child, with traditional cap from the period, oversees the flock of geese and watches as the geese chase away an intruding dog, hence the title 'Routing the Enemy'. The board is almost half an inch thick, providing a solid base for the work. It is possible the painting is on canvas attached to the board, but the adhesion is so uniform and tight it is impossible to be certain without disturbing the paint. Dodd was a printmaker as well as an artist, working in Tunbridge Wells, Kent and Essex. He is especially known for paintings of dogs in hunt scenes, with this lovely exception of geese on a quiet summer day. Saltire Gallerie freshly cleaned and prepared the painting for sale in excellent condition with no known previous restoration. The newer frame surface was re-touched, and the original liner with old stenciling was left as is. Ready to be displayed! Shipping estimates are a little higher to accommodate the weight of the Board. It may be less, but is estimated higher to assure there are no surprises as you consider your purchase of this fine period oil painting.
