The canvas, in my opinion, can be traced back to the hand of Pietro Domenico Olivero (Turin, August 1, 1679 - January 13, 1755), as revealed by comparisons with other works by the artist, such as the Peasants' Feast already at the Gilberto Zabert Gallery in Turin, where we find an entirely similar layout, with the figures crowded around the building, placed on the left, and some household goods piled up on the right, including a copper cauldron almost identical to the one sketched in our painting. But see also other similar subjects painted by the Turin-based artist, such as the Game of Bowls already at the Cantore Gallery in Modena or the other version on the Genoese market in 2019, which, although radically different compositionally, confirm the painter's interest in playful themes and manifest the same ways in delineating characters, with synthetic and robust brushstrokes. The artist was born in Turin, in the parish of St. Thomas, on August 1, 1679 to Giovanna and Francesco, a carver by profession. He trained at the workshop of the painter and architect Melchiorre Baldassarre Bianco. He was esteemed by Victor Amadeus II of Savoy, who commissioned paintings for the Venaria Reale (1714), the Royal Palace of Turin (1716), and Rivoli Castle (1724), as well as by his ministers Pietro Mellarède and Carlo Vincenzo Ferrero di Roasio marquis of Ormea whose collections counted many of the painter's works. His success on the Turin art scene earned him election as prior of the Accademia di San Luca in Turin (1726). In 1731 he painted the eleven canvases with Stories of Franciscan Saints in the sacristy of the church of St. Thomas in Turin, while in 1734 he made the Marriage at Cana for the sanctuary of Oropa. The Savoy commissions continued with the ten canvases executed for the castle of Agliè (1737), the decoration of the third room of the New Archives in the Royal Palace of Turin (1739-41), and the thirty or so works for the hunting lodge at Stupinigi (1748-51). The painter also measured himself in designing sets for the Teatro Regio in Turin (1745-46). He made his will on November 15, 1754, and died in his hometown on January 13, 1755. Olivero's genre scenes, such as the one commented on here, reveal a focus on Flemish painting, particularly by David Teniers the Younger, Peter Mauritz Bolckman, Theodor Helmbreker, and Cornelis de Wael, as well as Roman bamboozlers such as Pieter van Laer, Michelangelo Cerquozzi, and Jan Miel...

Anna Milo Upjohn was an overlooked female illustrator in the school of Jessie Willcox Smith. Her work displays a deep academic knowledge evident in her stylized illustrations of children and engaging their world. Signed lower right- 'A.M.UPJOHN" unframed. Unframed Anna Milo Upjohn (1868–1951) was an American artist, illustrator, author, and relief worker who, late in her long career, became known for paintings, drawings, and illustrations she made for the American Red Cross. After graduating from high school, she studied art briefly in New York but obtained most of her training in Paris from Claudio Castelucho and Lucien Simon.[1] In the early years of the twentieth century, she became known both for her portraits and paintings of children and for her book and magazine illustrations. Finding herself in France at the outset of the First World War, she devoted herself to relief work first among the refugees in Paris and later among the devastated villages in France and Belgium. Having spent the first half of her adult life as an independent professional, she served as a staff artist for the American Red Cross between 1921 and 1931. She traveled extensively during her adult life and lived mostly in New York City; Ithaca, New York; and Washington, D.C. Early life and training During the 1870s, Upjohn's family lived with her grandfather, a well-known architect named Richard Upjohn who had retired to a scenic home in Garrison, New York. Richard Upjohn's biographer says when she was about five she would accompany him as he sketched and painted. She questioned him about his color choices and learned that artists often chose colors different from the ones present in the subjects they painted. He also showed her engravings of famous paintings, explaining what made them great and where they fell short in his view.[2] Her family was living in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin when she graduated from high school in 1887.[3] A few years later, the family moved to New York, where, in the early 1890s, she took classes at the Cooper Union Woman's Art School.[4] She began her foreign travels in 1893 and during the next few years studied art in Munich, Florence, and Paris.[5] In 1902, she took an illustration class at the National Academy of Design and the following year won the Academy's Suydam silver medal for her work.[6] Between 1909 and 1912, she studied and traveled in Europe's other major cities.[7] In 1922, Upjohn told a reporter that she had studied art "in many places, usually for a few months at a time and disconnectedly, but what counted most was the work she did in Paris under Castelucho and Lucien Simon.”[1] Born in Barcelona, Castelucho's birth name was Claudi Catelucho Diana, but he went by his surname alone. In Paris during the early years of the twentieth century, he and Simon both trained private students and both taught at two mondernist alternatives to the École des Beaux Arts: the Académie Colarossi and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.[8] Upjohn did not say whether she took private lessons, classes, or both. 18th century French Rococo portrait of a young noble lady This cheerful young lady is looking at the spectator with a sparkling eyes has a cheeky smile on her face, almost as if she has just heard a funny story. She is very elegantly dressed, wearing a blue dress with embroidered silk sleeves. The bodice is adorned with a cream silk band which has been beautifully tied to a ribbon at the top, a tulle-lining completes the dress. Her hair is styled in an elaborate 18th century style and tied together with a blue and cream silk hairband. This portrait has been wonderfully painted, the artist not only beautifully depicted the fabrics, but also marvellously captured the happy nature of the sitter. The painting really has a soul, when one looks at it, it feels as if one is looking at a real person. It is very close to the works of Joseph-Siffred Duplessis (1725-1802) and it shares an uncanny resemblance to the portrait that he painted of the Comtesse de Provence, Princess of Savoie and wife of the King Louis XVIII of France. Duplessis is known to have reused many of his favoured compositions in different portraits, but he always applied slight differences, such as in the present painting. We believe that the present painting was created by someone from his very close circle. Joseph-Siffred Duplessis (1725-1802) was a renowned French portrait painter, famed for his intimately rendered portraits. After training for many years in Paris, Duplessis presented himself to the Académie in 1769 and was afforded the opportunity to exhibit regularly at the Salon. He was very successful and in 1777, he was allowed to paint a full-length portrait of Louis XVI (1754–1793) in his state robes. Two years later he created a portrait of Benjamin Franklin in a red coat with a fur collar, a painting which was the subject of much favorable comment. It was destined to become the artist’s most famous work and perhaps the best known image of the great American patriot...

His studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, did not last very long, for he wanted immediate independence and decided to follow courses in the private academies of Montparnasse.
