Champagne for the Honeymoon
Located in Miami, FL
Pruett Carter captures the quintessential look of the 1950's in this loosely rendered but charming work for Redbook. Bright, punchy colors define each object and are arranged in a simplified but complex composition of intersecting and overlapping planes of color. The double portrait of the girl expresses a peak moment of introspection. She ponders her situation while preparing to get dressed for her special occasion. The whole scene is imbued with suspense about her future. Carter is a great academic painter. With just a few light touches of the brush, he quickly defines the form of the subject and achieves the X factor of the work. The profile and frontal view of the girl clearly are the same person. He nails her look. This is hard to do. Do not underestimate it. Sadly, there is a reason why there are very few contemporary artists can actually paint and draw without tracing photographs or resort to naive painting. It's hard to do. It's hard to be a painter. You can not fake...

Ballantine Beer Ad. Mid-Century American Illustration
Located in Miami, FL
Only Ballantine Ale Brews "Brewer's Gold," ad illustration appeared in the major magazines of the day. A magic moment is caught at a peak point of drama. It's the instant of friends having fun. A cold beer from the fridge is offered and it's is acknowledged with a head nod. The woman in the foreground covers her giggling face reacting to a funny comment. The decisive moment is preserved. Sounds like a critique of an art photograph? No, it's an illustrator. This ingenious Infiniti "S" composition simultaneously represents the best of photography and painting. Cartier-Bresson could have captured the precise moment. While Nicolas Poussin could have rendered the complex figural composition. Add to it , a painting technique and color scheme with the quick drama of a post-impressionist. We have a great work of art by an overlooked American illustrator/artist/painter, Mike Ludlow...

"Plage de Trouville" 1953, 20th Century oil on canvas by Emilio Grau Sala
Located in Madrid, ES
EMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 PLAGE DE TROUVILLE signed Grau Sala (lower left) signed again, located & dated "Grau Sala, Trouville, 1953" on the reverse oil on canvas 15 X 24 inches (38 X 61 cm.) framed: 24-1/2 X 33-3/4 inches (62.5 X 85.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Private French Collection Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. Grau Sala lived and absorbed all the avant-garde movements that broke through in Paris, but never adhered to any. Creating your personal style. His pictorial lyricism and naturalism superimposed the evotative and sensitive quality of the image to any other concern. In 1953 Grau Sala spends his first summer in Honfleur becoming one of the most active Honflerian painters. Honfleur forms a coast triangle next to Deauville and Trouville, and in that August of 53, Grau Sala pinto is an elegant beach, which at that time met French and European high society. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar...

Cabins in the Camargue
Located in London, GB
'Cabins in the Camargue' by Yves Brayer (circa 1950s). The Camargue is a vast, swampy delta near Arles, very exotic, with tall marsh grasses where pink flamingos, black bulls and white horses roam freely. This image depicts one of the gardians in a small gathering of cabanes, hat hanging cowboy-style around the back of the neck, as he approaches his horse grazing outside its modest stable. Although there are many horses that still run free in the Camargue, there are cowboys like this one — called gardians — who ride the white horses on the beaches...

"Femme Rousse Sur Fond Bleu", Albert Bertalan, Original Oil, Blue, Figurative
Located in Dallas, TX
"Femme Rousse Sur Fond Bleu" is an original oil on canvas impressionistic portrait of a woman by Albert Bertalan. A red-headed lady sits with her hand pressed upon her cheek thoughtfully thinking in front of a blue background. The painting is framed with an ornate gold frame. From the late 19th century until World War Two, Paris was the center of the art world. Artists and intellectuals from around the globe descended on Paris, drawn by the atmosphere of creative freedom established by the French Impressionists. Because of the Impressionists’ innovations the direction of art had changed forever, the times were ripe for another Renaissance. The School of Paris, as this broad-based group of artists are referred to embodied the spirit of modernism. Albert Bertalan was born on September 21, 1899 in Jaszbereny, Hungary. He is known for painting compositions of figures in unique environments, including women by the sea, among other similar subject matters. He studied at the Nagybanyai Art School under some of the most important Hungarian artists, including Ivànyi Grünwald...

Figurative Paintings for Sale

Figurative art, as opposed to abstract art, retains features from the observable world in its representational depictions of subject matter. Most commonly, figurative paintings reference and explore the human body, but they can also include landscapes, architecture, plants and animals — all portrayed with realism.

While the oldest figurative art dates back tens of thousands of years to cave wall paintings, figurative works made from observation became especially prominent in the early Renaissance. Artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and other Renaissance masters created naturalistic representations of their subjects.

Pablo Picasso is lauded for laying the foundation for modern figurative art in the 1920s. Although abstracted, this work held a strong connection to representing people and other subjects. Other famous figurative artists include Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. Figurative art in the 20th century would span such diverse genres as Expressionism, Pop art and Surrealism.

Today, a number of figural artists — such as Sedrick Huckaby, Daisy Patton and Eileen Cooper — are making art that uses the human body as its subject.
