'Nude Seated Female & Cat - Post Modern Pop', by George Oswalt is a 60 x 48 x 1.75 inch Oil on Canvas Painting depicting three figures within an architectural space. A seated nude female and a housecat occupy the foreground of the space. Their gazes are cast downward in opposite directions. The most engaging gaze comes from the hanging classical female portrait within Oswalt's larger painting. The least animate figure within the scene of Oswalt's overall painting seems to engage the viewer in the most direct way.
George Oswalt was born in Oklahoma City in 1949. He is a painter, songwriter, art critic, and has been involved in filmmaking. George works in both figurative and abstract styles in painting. His goal as an artist is to fully realize his creative potential. Oswalt's work represents the hybrid nature of society. This hybrid reality is as much where he lives as the physical space of Oklahoma City. Growing up in Oklahoma has given Oswalt a sense of space that has a direct impact on his visual work both environmentally and politically. His research has taken him from a parochial view into an International understanding of culture.
Oswalt holds an MFA in painting and has taught both secondary and college levels. He was the director of the Arts Annex, a former gallery space and school for the Oklahoma Museum of Art. Oswalt has curated exhibitions and produced plays. After graduate studies in the 1990's, Oswalt was in an artist residency in California. George was a board member of a non-profit gallery for 30 years, and curated and hung exhibitions throughout his tenure there. The artist has shown his work in hundreds of exhibitions since his first one man show in 1974, including national and regional shows. He been a full time artist since 2007, and continues to exhibit his work in museums and galleries.
