The present paintings refer to the works attributed to a follower of Paolo Veronese in the Bayerische Staatsgemälde Sammlungen , Würzburg . The paintings are comparable and complementary to a set of 6 Turkish rulers sold in 2022 for 1,5 M. by Sothebys.
Located at the crossroads of East and West, the Ottoman Empire absorbed a diverse range of influences, including Chinese, European, and Persian, to produce a distinctive and coherent artistic language throughout a range of decorative arts. Ottoman expansion into Eastern Europe and subsequent access to the silver mines of the Balkans between the 14th and 16th C. led to a rich and skilled tradition of Ottoman silverware, tiles, dishes, and other ceramic objects. From the 16th to 19th C. the production of decorative arts continued to flourish with the introduction of both rococo and baroque elements signalling an increasingly open attitude to all things European. The production of Orientalist paintings is rich in topographical landscapes of Istanbul, genre scenes, and portraits of Ottoman notables. Europe’s fascination with its powerful, Muslim neighbours inspired a wave of accounts and paintings of the Ottoman world. The taking of Constantinople in 1453 by the young Mehmet II ('The Conqueror’) not only sparked this interest, but the young Sultan himself, who invited European painters to his court, further fuelled this fashion. The period following his reign saw relations between the Republic of Venice and its powerful neighbour reach a state of relative calm, initiating a period of exchange and trade.

Essay:
This captivating piece, originating from the studio of the revered Dutch artist Jacob Ochtervelt, mirrors the composition of a signed and dated 1669 canvas by Ochtervelt that is presently housed in the Hermitage museum. Its subject, "The Grape Seller" immerses us in a typical 17th-century interior, replete with characters from various strata of society.
At the center, a fruit vendor is depicted bending over to weigh grapes for the buyer. A child hands some of the grapes to her mother to taste, their attentive maid standing by. The backdrop showcases typical Ochtervelt details: a hint of the city visible through the doorway, light filtering in through an overhead window, and a playful dog at their side.
The exquisite quality of the piece is evident in the minutiae, such as the intricate detailing of the mother's earring, which in reality spans only a few millimeters yet boasts impressive attention to detail. Initially, Sotheby's considered this work to be an autograph piece by Ochtervelt. But due to some uncertainty, it was auctioned as Workshop of Jacob Ochtervelt. On the other hand, the esteemed Cabinet Turquin in Paris leans toward attributing the piece directly to Jacob Ochtervelt himself.
The painting is framed in an authentic period frame, which has been delicately restored by Stockholm's Förgyllning och Bildhuggeri. The frame retains its age-old patina and, while in used condition, has minor imperfections adding to its charm.
Another interesting thing worth to mention is the painting's provenance. It was once owned by the 1st Viscount Rothermere (1868-1940), the founder of the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror...

Dealt with in the proto-gospel of James, an apocryphal gospel, Mary's presentation to the temple remains to this day one of the most moving Marian artistic episodes. The moment figured here, in which the little Virgin is encouraged to the high priest by her nobly determined mother Anna, encapsulates a composition harmoniously cradled between Baroque and Classicism. All present turned in amazement to observe the young woman's unexpected entry into the sacred premises, while a direct light detached her figure from the soft incensed air. This strong expressive naturalness, added to the clear formal concreteness used by the artist, intoxicates the painting with the academicism already belonging to Francesco Solimena and Giacomo del Po, on a par with the greatest Neapolitan masters. The thoughtful consistency with which the artist organizes the luminous and tangible colors also formalizes his dependence on Pietro Bardellino, a distinguished exponent of the first Rococo investigations on Neapolitan soil.
Committed from his youth to the great hall of the Farmacia degli Incurabili, Bardellino turned to the Oratory of the Confraternity of the Whites of the Holy Spirit, working at the same time for Bitonto Cathedral. Appointed a member of the Academy of Fine Arts, he was recalled there as an active collaborator by Vanvitelli himself, in 1773. A debtor in turn to the style of Francesco de Mura, his master, by the mid-18th century Bardellino was already registered as a fresco painter at the main royal residences of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, reaching the pinnacle of his success there in 1781 with the commission to fresco The Virtues Crowning Ferdinand IV and Maria Carolina on the huge ceiling of the Grand Hall of the Palazzo dei Regi Studi in Naples (later to become the Royal Bourbon Museum used in our days as the National Archaeological Museum of Naples).
