Margrete Levy 1881-1962 Levy was a Danish artist; she worked in Paris from 1905-1911. Levy was niece to the Danish master painter Kristian Zartmann. She married French author Louis Nicolai Levy in 1911. She applied for technical school at Charlotte Sode and Julie Meldahl's school before applying for admission to the Academy of Fine Arts for Women, where she studied at Viggo Johansen 1900-1902. In 1902 she traveled to Florence as a nanny for a Danish family, giving her the opportunity to study the old masters of the art collections. When she returned home, she continued her education in 1904-05 at Bertha and Dorph's painting school. In 1905, she traveled to Paris and taught at various drawing schools while studying the collections of the Louvre, especially Leonardo da Vinci, who inspired her for the symbolic painting Five Sisters , 1905, which she debuted at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition the following year. 1906-07 she was a student at the French Academy in Rome. With a few interruptions she exhibited at Charlottenborg's Spring Exhibition 1913-43, and on several occasions she also participated in Charlottenborg's Autumn Exhibition and the Artists' Autumn Exhibition. She had several personal exhibitions, including 1910 in Ole Haslunds Hus, 1919 and 1923 in Kunstforeningen, 1927 at Møntergården and 1945 in Alfred Andersen's Art Shop. She participated in several foreign exhibitions, for example Modern Danish Artists in Brighton, England 1912, and Exposition présentée par le Club international Féminin , Paris 1958. She was often represented at exhibitions reserved for women, for example Nine Painters in Admiral Gjeddes Gaard, in 1936 and Nordic Artists in Stockholm 1948. She participated in the Women's Artists Retrospective Exhibition in 1920, which was organized by the Women's Artists Society, on whose board she sat. Along with 18 other members, including Anna and Helga Ancher, Christine Swane, Elisabeth Neckelmann and, Olivia Holm-Møller, she exhibited at the Kunstforeningen in 1930. "Couple on Bench at the Beach" is an original pastel drawing on paperboard by Francesco Spicuzza. The artist signed the piece in the lower left. This drawing depicts two figures sitting on a bench in front of a body of water. The artist used mostly pastel colors for this piece. 6 7/8" x 9 7/8" art 18 1/2" x 21 3/8" frame Francesco J. Spicuzza, born in Sicily on July 23, 1883, came to America at the age of 8. He supported himself as a fruit peddler until a newspaperman gave him $4 a week to go to school. He attended classes at the Milwaukee Art Students League, where he studied under Alexander Mueller. There he learned to paint in the then-fashionable "Munich School" technique, with detailed realism in heavy browns and grayed-out hues. Spicuzza completed eight grades in four years, and then in 1911, three businessmen advanced him enough money to allow him to study in New York under artist and teacher John Carlson. It was during this time that Spicuzza changed his style of painting, developing an impressionistic use of color, form and atmospheric renditions. After a period of grinding poverty, one of Spicuzza's pictures won a major New York competition. It was the first of 60 wins, both in the U.S. and Paris. He became a fashionable painter, and many of the leading collections have his work. Spicuzza's typical works were beach scenes, still life, landscapes and portraits done in pastels, oils, ink, charcoal and watercolors. Much of his work traced the history of Milwaukee in the early 1900s. He was probably best known for his scenes of women and children splashing in the waves...

Wonderful German genre painting of 17th century tavern scene in style of Franz Hals by Karl Josef Muller (German, 1864-1942) dated 1918. Signed and dated lower left corner "Karl Muller - Hamburg 1918". Condition: Good; professionally restored: Canvas restreched on new stretcher bars; five repairs made to small tears in canvas (see image); cleaned and re-varnished with UV-resistant varnish. Unframed. Image size: 39.5"H x 55"W. We have the original frame which needs some extensive repair to the gesso. Happy to include the frame with the painting as is. Karl Müller was born in Hamburg-Altstadt in 1865. His wealthy Jewish parents Abraham Müller (1832-1896), citizen of the Hanseatic city since 1869, and Henriette "Jette", b. Burchard (born 1832 Neubuckow / Mecklenburg), had a cigar factory at Spielbudenplatz 5 in St.Pauli. When Karl Müller was ten years old, next to factory and warehouse, now at Speersort 11 (Altstadt), there was also a branch in Altona-Ottensen with the address Am Felde 68. The family lived at the time at Pferdemarkt 13 (Old Town). After attending the Jewish Foundation School at the Zeughausmarkt, Karl Müller completed a three-year lithography apprenticeship. From 1886 to 1888, he studied at the Royal Saxon School of Applied Arts in Dresden with the history and decoration painter Donadini, then with Professor Hanke of the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin.
