This mixed media portrait by artist Sarah Jacobs features a man with a cheerful expression looking out towards the viewer with his hands raised near his face in a playful gesture. His smiling face is framed by the yellow petals of a sunflower, acting as a halo around the crown of his head. The subjecct is both dressed in, and otherwise surrounded by, an amass of nature-inspired patterning featuring orchids, roses, and tomatoes that blur the line of the figure's corporeal reality with the world around him. This style is very reminiscent of the works by contemporary portrait painter Kehinde Wiley.
Artist Commentary:
My very talented model, Andrew, is a playwright. I designed two patterns for this. Purple orchids and particularly the the national flower of Colombia, the Cattleya trianae orchid, are his mother’s favorite flowers. The other pattern's motifs are tomatoes and roses because of the idea of throwing tomatoes at the stage for a bad performance or giving roses on opening night for a good one, since Andrew is a playwright. The metal leaf “halo” is in the shape of a sunflower, Andrew’s favorite flower. The way that the folds in the shirt are painted on top of the pattern instead of the patterns bending with the folds references Medieval European painters’ way of painting fabric to go with the halo.
About the Artist:
Sarah Jacobs is a contemporary artist. Her work has been exhibited in the US and in Europe and she has taken part in artist residencies in Grimma, Germany, Cali, Colombia, and Taos, New Mexico. She has won multiple grants, including the Arts Council England Grant, and her work can be found in public and private collections in the US, UK, and Hong Kong. She has had solo and two person exhibitions in New York City, London, Wrocław, Poland and Bristol, England, among other cities. Born in 1984, Jacobs was raised in Littlestown, Pennsylvania. She was educated in Art History at Gettysburg College and received her MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore in 2010. There she studied under Joyce Kozloff and Timothy App. Jacobs moved back to the USA in 2014 after 3 years living in London and Bristol, UK where she became a naturalized British citizen.
