"Touch", Large Mixed Medium, India Ink and Coffee Grounds on Deckle BFK Paper
Located in Detroit, MI
This large mixed medium painting in india ink and coffee grounds on heavyweight deckle BFK print paper, "Touch", depicts an abstract body in motion. With impressionistic strokes the observer can only glimpse her outline in browns and blues, leaving the finer details to the imagination, giving the work a ghostly air of a faded memory. Signed by artist on the lower right. "Capturing movement is everything to me in my work. It exists in the way the brush moves and the hand bends bringing action and life to the surface it is connecting to. The work itself can then exist as a history, and bring forth evidence of time as the essential force within the artwork. In today’s contemporary world, there are many ways to define art. That is why it is impotent that you, the viewer, understand why I create and what art means to me. For me, art is so much more than an image of an object, an advertisement or a statement. Art is in its nature the undeniable evidence of our own humanity and existence. It connects us, to each other and to our past. Speaking to the parts of us we never will fully understand, our emotions, are spirituality and are mortality. As an artist; I need to speak to these feelings and questions. Using mark-making and gestures as a guide, I search, letting go of control as the moment breathes life into the creation of my work. Through the boundary of line, I give shape to the image. Conveying an overall balance between the moment of creation and the structure of the figure. Though this practice, I strive to provoke a universal connection to the work. One that speaks to humanity's emotional understanding of empathy, curiosity, sorrow and joy." - Chris Lujan...

The Phoenix, Oil Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
"This dramatic image of a winged figure creates a brightly colored yet soft composition that fills the room with warmth," shares artist Gary Leonard. Inspired by the beauty of wings, Gary says it was a challenge to render them in a soft flowing manner with the model. "The warm color palette creates an inviting and peaceful feeling," he adds.

About the Artist
Through composition, color, texture and more, Gary Leonard celebrates beauty. His works start with the subject, but then he lets the work evolve into a more complex composition. Oftentimes, he enjoys merging figures with abstract images and varying textures. He hopes that his works will leave the viewer with a sense of warmth and peace. When he's not making art, he enjoys listening to music and learning how to play the piano.

"Manhattan Night Life"
Located in Lambertville, NJ
Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by: Vaclav Vytlacil (1892-1984) He was born to Czechoslovakian parents in 1892 in New York City. Living in Chicago as a youth, he took classes at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, returning to New York when he was 20. From 1913 to 1916, he enjoyed a scholarship from the Art Students League, and worked with John C. Johansen (a portraitist whose expressive style resembled that of John Singer Sargent), and Anders Zorn. He accepted a teaching position at the Minneapolis School of Art in 1916, remaining there until 1921. This enabled him to travel to Europe to study Cézanne’s paintings and works of the Old Masters. He traveled to Paris, Prague, Dresden, Berlin, and Munich seeking the works of Titian, Cranach, Rembrandt, Veronese, and Holbein, which gave him new perspective. Vytlacil studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich, settling there in 1921. Fellow students were Ernest Thurn and Worth Ryder, who introduced him to famous abstractionist Hans Hofmann. He worked with Hofmann from about 1922 to 1926, as a student and teaching assistant. During the summer of 1928, after returning to the United States, Vytlacil gave lectures at the University of California, Berkeley, on modern European art. Soon thereafter, he became a member of the Art Students League faculty. After one year, he returned to Europe and successfully persuaded Hofmann to teach at the League as well. He spent about six years in Europe, studying the works of Matisse, Picasso, and Dufy. In 1935, he returned to New York and became a co-founder of the American Abstract Artists group in 1936. He later had teaching posts at Queens College in New York; the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California; Black Mountain College in North Carolina; and the Art Students League. His paintings exhibit a clear inclination toward modernism. His still lives and interiors from the 1920s indicate an understanding of the art of Cézanne. In the 1930s, his works displayed two very different kinds of art at the same time. His cityscapes and landscapes combine Cubist-inspired spatial concerns with an expressionistic approach to line and color. Vytlacil also used old wood, metal, cork, and string in constructions, influenced by his friend and former student, Rupert Turnbull. He eventually ceased creating constructions as he considered them too limiting. The spatial challenges of painting were still his preference. During the 1940s and 1950s, his works indicated a sense of spontaneity not felt in his earlier work. He married Elizabeth Foster in Florence, Italy, in 1927 and they lived and worked in Positano, Italy for extended periods of time. Later on, they divided their time between homes in Sparkill, New York and Chilmark, Massachusetts, where Vyt, as he was affectionately called, taught at the Martha's Vineyard Art...

All forms of creative and recreational cultural expression are or should be an invitation to travel. Music, literature, poetry, theater, cinema, painting, sculpture, photography, and so on, are no exceptions to this rule when they carry a stamp of sincerity. An act of expression can only be authentic if it is not motivated by the constraints laid down by obligations, by recognition. Painting, like other means of expression, is a cry, a feeling, a listening process, pain, joy... a realization or an epiphany to be shared with my family and friends and with people who go to my exhibitions. In the former case I experience a real moment of sharing, a kind of osmosis. A work - irrespective of what it contains - is only successful as an act of expression if it contains life, something to think about, feelings a pathway to an exchange, an invitation concerning it and the observer. If this communion takes place, then the work is a good one. When the architecture of a work, its theme, the balance of forms and colors, the mobility or freedom of the eye, the seeing, and the thinking, are all present in a kind of harmony, there are no longer any obstacles between a work and us. After painting for more than 50 years, I have had many opportunities during the course of my exhibitions to express myself with visitors who wanted to go through the mirror of the initial visual impression of a painting. I find their uncertainties and their desire to know - more than just view - touching. Other visitors view, sometimes view themselves, and then continue going around a gallery having ''read'' paintings in their own ways. Some people cast a disinterested passing glance, and, very sure of themselves, continue on their way. These people are sometimes in the majority. After having worked in conjunction with several gallery-owners, exhibited my work in France and abroad, I have never agreed to sign a contract. I never express myself on an imposed topic, work, based on an order, or work at a certain speed. Art cannot be dictated, it cannot be ordered. Life, time, kindness, love, madness, freedom, money, politics, the mind, the heart, its opposite, popular and honest art, all of life's facets and asses became my life. They are my reflective and observational canvas in terms of the content of my paintings. Developments, variations on forms have taken place, but never in relation to the basics of my process. On this journey I came across ''sand'', which can be found on the surface of my paintings from 1966 to 1998 - and occasionally after 1998. We are made of dust, and must return to dust. Humbleness is a watchword which is included in one way or another, in my paintings, by means of signs or of small sentences, and this is notably the case in relation to topics addressed concerning covetousness, temptation, greed, selfishness, hypocrisy, success at any price, lying, power, money, art for money's sake people, and so forth. I hesitated a very long time before writing about my painting. I believed that doing so was a bit like usurping the role of the ''watchers'', those people who prefer to have their own interpretation, and prefer to take the tome to uncover, in the meanders of my handwriting and my short sentences, the keys, crucial details and symbols in my works - what is hiding behind the initial image. When you read a good book or listen to music, you do not make decisions based on the title of the book or on the first note...

Large Colorful MCM Abstract Expressionist Oil Painting Modernist Ralph Rosenborg
Located in Surfside, FL
Ralph Rosenborg (American, 1913-1992) Mountain Weed with Two Clouds, oil on jute canvas, canvas is hand signed recto and verso, artists label and Snyder Fine Art gallery label, The painting is dated 1965. Dimensions: 24 x 36 canvas, framed size is 44.5 x 32.5. Ralph Rosenborg (1913–1992) was an American artist whose paintings were described as both expressionist and abstract and who was a colleague of the New York Abstract Expressionists in the 1940s and 1950s. Unlike them, however, he preferred to make small works and tended to explicitly draw upon natural forms and figures for his abstract subjects. Called a "highly personal artist," he developed a unique style that was considered to be both mystical and magic. His career was exceptionally long, covering more than 50 years. Rosenborg was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 9, 1913. In 1929, while he was a high school student, he began to work with the designer, artist, and instructor, Henriette Reiss. When Rosenborg encountered her, Reiss was serving as an instructor for the School Art League in the American Museum of Natural History. She was then engaged in instructing both students and their teachers in the city school system by a method she called Rhythmic Design. She believed inspiration for abstract designs could be found in rhythms—rhythms that could be perceived in ordinary perceptions much as they are when listening to music. In May 1930 Reiss selected a drawing by Rosenborg to be shown in an exhibition of creative design by City high school students. From 1930 to 1933, aged 17 to 20, Rosenborg studied with Reiss in what Vivien Raynor of the New York Times called a "pupil-apprentice" relationship. During this time she instructed him in music appreciation, literature, and art history as well as giving technical training in art. In April 1934 Rosenborg was one of 1,500 artists to participate in the annual Salons of America exhibition, which was held that year in Rockefeller Center RCA Building. Each paid two dollars for the privilege of hanging up to three works and none was given prominence over the others. The New York Times reported that by the time the show closed a month later, some 30,000 people had viewed it. The following year he was given a solo exhibition (his first) at the Lounge Gallery of the Eighth Street Playhouse. The year after that he participated in a group show held by the Municipal Art Committee and in 1937 was given a second solo exhibition, this time in the Artists Gallery. That year he also became a founding member of and participated in a group show held by American Abstract Artists, a loose assembly of artists that aimed to promote abstract art and artists in New York. Its founders included Josef Albers, Ilya Bolotowsky, Werner Drewes, Ibram Lassaw, Mercedes Matter, Louis Schanker, Vaclav Vytlacil and Rudolph Weisenborn. At roughly the same time Rosenborg associated himself with a group of abstractionists that called itself "The Ten" (It included Ben-Zion, Mark Rothko, Adolph Gottlieb and Joe Solman) and in May 1938 joined with its other members in what would be his first appearance in a commercial gallery: the Gallery Georgette Passedoit. In 1938 he his work appeared in a group show at the Lounge Gallery, in 1939 in group shows at the Artists Gallery and at the Bonestell Gallery with David Burliuk, Earl Kerkam, Karl Knaths and Jean Liberte...
