Pair of antique reverse glass paintings

18th Century

About the Item

Pair of antique reverse glass paintings Continental, 18th Century Frame: Height 46cm, width 40cm, depth 3.5cm Glass: Height 38cm, width 32cm The paintings in this pair depict two complementary subjects and do so in a decidedly Renaissance manner. One painting portrays Venus and Cupid, the gods of love, desire, attraction, and all attendant feelings; the other painting depicts a courting couple, a shepherd and a shepherdess, as they play music amidst their flock. The implication is clear: Venus and Cupid have acted upon the couple, who are quite clearly in love. The paintings, which date from the 18th Century, are unusual due to their manner of execution: they are reverse glass paintings. The process of reverse glass painting entails paint being applied to glass: consequently, accents and other features that would normally be applied last in painting are applied first, with background details being added later. The process is extremely difficult and tedious, and the effect is equally impressive. The paintings are contained by carved giltwood frames.

19th Century Dutch Oil Painting of a Musical Scene
Located in London, GB
19th century Dutch oil painting of a musical scene Dutch, Late 19th Century Board: Height 28.5cm, width 24cm Frame: Height 46.5cm, width 42cm, depth 7cm This beautifully composed 19th-century oil painting offers an evocative glimpse into everyday domestic life, centring on a tender moment between a mother and her child. Set at the open window of a period townhouse, the woman gently cradles her toddler, who wears a traditional white cap and a 19th century toddler gown, clutching a small metal rattle. Dressed in refined mid-19th century fashion, the mother wears a vivid orange dress beneath a vibrant pelerine and a pink-ribboned lace cap—indicating her middle-class status and contemporary taste. Adding a charming narrative layer, she reaches down to touch the cap of a young street musician...

Group portrait painting after the hunt, oil on canvas
Located in London, GB
This charming painting depicts a group of gentlemen gathered around a kitchen table and admiring an English Setter. The snowy rooftops, just visible from the kitchen window, combined with the lit fire and holly decorating the picture frames in the room, implies that this is a Christmas scene. It also appears that the gentlemen have just returned from a fox hunt, and are now warming themselves, drinking port and smoking long pipes by the fire. Five men — three gathered behind the table and two standing in front — are identically dressed in long black riding boots...
