About the Item
George Terzian and his unique Cubist style of painting is highly regarded and his oils are collected internationally. His subjects are presented as a symphony of various colors and shapes. He began to draw and paint at the young age of fourteen. Inspired by the Post-Impressionist school, his early works employed a plein air technique derived from the
areas near his family home, close to Marseilles.
Eventually, Terzian moved to and settled in Paris in the 1960s where he was influenced by Braques and Picasso. His own style of Post Cubism evolved, focusing entirely on still life. Terzian has had many solo exhibitions in Paris and has received international
acclaim with a strong presence in the NY, London and French art markets.

Notes : Georges Terzian est né à Marseille le 8 mars 1939. D'origine arménienne, sa famille vivait initialement en Russie mais s'est installée en France avant sa naissance. Terzian a commencé à dessiner et à peindre lorsqu'il était très jeune. À quatorze ans, ses parents l'inscrivent à l'École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille. Il y étudie pendant un an mais quitte l'école avant d'avoir terminé ses études, bien qu'il continue à peindre dans son atelier de Sainte-Mitre, près de Marseille. Il a également étudié la musique à Paris avec Jean Lumière, qui a été le tuteur de nombreux musiciens talentueux émergeant à Paris à cette époque. Inspirés par les post-impressionnistes, les premiers tableaux de Georges Terzian se concentrent sur les paysages de Provence. Travaillant à l'huile et à la gouache, il a expérimenté la technique impressionniste de la peinture "en plein air" dans les environs de sa maison familiale. À cette époque, il est particulièrement impressionné par les compositions de formes simples et de plans de couleurs de Cézanne, peintes au début du siècle. Georges Terzian s'est installé à Paris dans les années 1960. Peignant de manière prolifique, le développement de l'artiste s'est constamment articulé autour du mouvement cubiste, avec une attention particulière pour Braque et Picasso. En étudiant les œuvres de ces maîtres cubistes, Terzian a développé son propre type de post-cubisme. Se concentrant presque entièrement sur les natures mortes, il a expérimenté la formation de différents objets, travaillant principalement à l'huile. As a teen, Paul Jenkins worked with ceramicist James Weldon which led to a fascination with glazes; Jenkins cultivated and eventually achieved a similar effect in his paintings by mixing oil and enamel on canvas in the 50s. In 1937, Jenkins attended classes at the Kansas City Art Institute where he painted his first series of watercolors he called interior landscapes inspired by caves in the Ozarks. After serving in the US Naval Air Corps for 2 years, Jenkins moved to New York to study with Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Morris Kantor at the Art Students League from 1948 to 1952. During those years, Jenkins met Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman.
In 1953 left for Paris where he discovered and was struck by the color density and luminosity in abstract oil works termed ébauches by Gustave Moreau and pastels by Odilon Redon. He began to experiment with poured paints in various thicknesses on canvas and paper and found this technique achieved luminosity of color which in its own way was comparable to that of Moreau and Redon. The next year, Jenkins added Winsor Newton pigments and chrysochrome, a viscous enamel paint, into his poured paintings, further enriching their color density and incandescence. The next major development in technique came in 1959 when he began using an ivory knife to guide the flow of paint. That same year, he also began to title his paintings Phenomena followed by a key word or phrase. A film on Jenkins' technique titled The Ivory Knife: Paul Jenkins at Work was shown at the Museum of Modern Art and received the Golden Eagle Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1966.

Julian Schnabel was born in 1951 in Brooklyn, New York, to a father of Czechoslovakian descent and a mother from New York. After graduating from the University of Houston with a BFA, he began his artistic career in New York City. He was provided an artist’s studio through the Whitney Independent Study Program. He moved to Houston, Texas for a year, where he created his “first adult painting”, composed of oil, wax, and paste shaped on a canvas. This was the beginining of his signature artistic style, using pre-existing and unconventional materials to create his art.
His first solo exhibition was at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, Texas, in 1976. He moved back to New York City working as a cook, then spent time travelled in Europe, where he was fascinated by Caravaggio and Fra Angelico; these influences led lead to Schnabel’s creation of ten wax paintings in Milan. After another trip to Europe a few years later, he was inspired to create his now-famous plate paintings. The plate paintings incorporated smashed plates and later glass and porcelain to adhere onto a canvas, painting on top of them and thereby mixing objects with flat surfaces. Schnabel’s paintings often use unconventional materials, like velvet or putty. His work is featured in various US and international museums and galleries in New York City, including Switzerland, London, Los Angeles, Paris, Munich, and more.
