Post-Impressionist Interior Paintings

POSTIMPRESSIONIST STYLE

In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Although the artists now associated with Postimpressionist art did not work as part of a group, they collectively employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.

The eighth and final Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886, and Postimpressionism — also spelled Post-Impressionism — is usually dated between then and 1905. The term “Postimpressionism” was coined by British curator and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 at the “Manet and the Postimpressionists” exhibition in London that connected their practices to the pioneering modernist art of Édouard Manet. Many Postimpressionist artists — most of whom lived in France — utilized thickly applied, vibrant pigments that emphasized the brushstrokes on the canvas.

The Postimpressionist movement’s iconic works of art include van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889) and Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884). Seurat’s approach reflected the experimental spirit of Postimpressionism, as he used Pointillist dots of color that were mixed by the eye of the viewer rather than the hand of the artist. Van Gogh, meanwhile, often based his paintings on observation, yet instilled them with an emotional and personal perspective in which colors and forms did not mirror reality. Alongside Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Gauguin, the Dutch painter was a pupil of Camille Pissarro, the groundbreaking Impressionist artist who boldly organized the first independent painting exhibitions in late-19th-century Paris.

The boundary-expanding work of the Postimpressionist painters, which focused on real-life subject matter and featured a prioritization of geometric forms, would inspire the Nabis, German Expressionism, Cubism and other modern art movements to continue to explore abstraction and challenge expectations for art.

His thick application of paint has definitive textual impasto that was influenced by his trip to Paris in 1909. In "Museum Piece...

"Interieur aux Fleurs Jaunes" 20th Century Oil on Canvas by Emilio Grau Sala
Located in Madrid, ES
EMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 INTERIEUR AUX FLEURS JAUNES signed "Grau Sala" (lower left) signed again, located, dated and titled "Grau Sala, Paris 61, Interieur aux fleurs jaunes" (on the reverse) oil on canvas 15 x 18-1/4 inches (38 x 46 cm.) framed: 23-1/2 x 26-1/2 (59.5 x 67 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Parisian Collection Interieur aux fleurs jaunes This interior with two female figures where also the plans made in different colors are drawing the composition. The abundant pictorial material distributed in geometric portions, gives life to the tablecloth and mother and daughter figures, in black and white colors of the jacket, while the black line takes care of the environments so as not to separate them. The fruit bowl and flowers give a cheerful touch with their pastel tones. Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in "Sala Parés", Barcelona. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents. In the years 1930-33 he had painted under the influence of Cubism, especially that of Torres García. It is from that time a painting of the port of Barcelona, geometric and structural, which completely anticipated what would later be his work. His personality began fully painting watercolors and oils with a certain fantasy character, with a point of decorative instinct and themes full of naivety and grace. Romantic interiors, paddocks, port scenes, sailors, etc. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. Mediterranean because his work has the color and light of that land. He understood and assimilated impressionist painting very well, and for that reason he was never subject to the modules of a formulist realism, nor the sexigencias of the forms. In Paris he found the best environment to give us a fruitful and intense work, because he could use the expressive potential of French art to enrich it. All this made him a very esteemed artist everywhere where his work was known. He was also very often required to illustrate books and publications in Paris. Also his posters were very successful. He painted a large number of subjects, but perhaps the theme of horse racing is where you can see in a very clear way the joyful and optimistic life that was lived at that time. In this fabric there is an explosion of juicy and vivid colors full of ingenuity and simplicity in its composition. Only a teacher could turn the complicated into something simple and beautiful. Before this work we feel a deep emotion, the emotion of before starting a horse race. Joy and nervousness at the same time. Especially since it is a direct emotion. There are no intermediaries between our eyes and what the work intends to tell us. This is precisely what seduces and catches us of this painting. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum...

'Roses with a Quimper Plate', Paris, Salon d’Automne, Fauve, Section d'Or
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right 'Jais' for Jais Nielsen (Danish, 1885-1961) and dated 1913. An early twentieth-century, oil still-life of pink dog-roses shown loosely arranged in a cobalt blue glass vase, set beside two Breton tin-glazed earthenware plates, resting on an azure-turquoise tablecloth and contrasted against a coral-ochre background. An elegant, early work by this foundational Danish Modernist. Born in Denmark, Jais Nielsen initially studied at Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler under Kristian Zahrtmann and exhibited for the first time at the 1907 Autumn Salon at the Charlottenborg Palace. Nielsen participated in the early and groundbreaking, “Group of Thirteen" Modernist show, where his focus on dynamic figural painting and his bold use of color set him dramatically apart from his contemporaries. From 1907-11, Nielsen's use of 'primitive' Fauve colors would continue to reinforce his break with traditional Danish painting. During this period, he made study excursions to important art centres, including, in 1909, to Berlin. In 1911, he moved to Paris where he settled in the Latin Quarter near the Musée Cluny. His first formal Paris exhibition was at the Salon d’Automne of 1912. During this first Paris period, Nielsen attended meetings of the Section d’Or at the studio of Jacques Villon and, as a result, began to incorporate subtle, yet distinct, Cubist elements into his work.   With the outbreak of World War One, Nielsen returned to Copenhagen, taking with him both his increasing compositional sophistication and a thorough understanding of the principles of Modernism. During this period, ports, dance and circus life became subjects of interest and he painted many canvases in the style of Analytic Cubism, of which he became the earliest and, arguably, the finest Danish exponent. From 1915 onwards, Nielsen also created Cubist sculptures and, from 1922-28, was employed as a sculptor by the Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory. Here, he produced a series of ceramic sculptures on Biblical themes which included the Good Samaritan and several versions of Jacob Wrestling with the Angel...

'Still Life of Daffodils', Paris Modernist, Royal Danish Academy, Charlottenborg
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'V. Rorup' for Viggo Julius Rorup (Danish, 1903-1971) and dated 1963. Exhibited: 'Copenhagen Art Association Exhibition, 1964', from exhibition stamp, verso, on stretcher bar. A substantial and vibrant Post-Impressionist still-life showing a profusion of fresh-cut daffodils informally arranged in a jade-green vase and set on a table in a sitting-room. Viggo Rorup was still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he made his 1928 debut at the Charlottenborg Palace. Following his graduation in 1930, he moved to Odsherred, where he continued his studies under Karl Bovin. Together, they founded the avante-garde group of artists named The Corner, which first introduced the principles of European Modernism to Danish painting. Rorup traveled widely, including to Italy, Austria, Spain, and, most importantly, to France, where his studies of the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists had a great stylistic impact on his later work. As Rorup continued to paint in the south of France, his palette grew brighter and the earlier, more defined, contours of his forms became subsumed into scintillating nuances of light. We are pleased to offer this elegant and dazzling still-life from the artist's late period. Exhibitions: KE 1928-29, 1933-38; Corner Harvest 1939-41; Corner 1942- 71, 1981; Liljevalchs, Sth. 1946; Union Frcia 1947; Nordic Arts Association. 1947; Wild Wheat, Kunstindustrimus. 1948; New Carlsberg Foundation, Charlottenborg Palace, 1952; Cromisterne 1952;Kalundborg 1952; Da. contemporary art, Charlottenborg Palace 1956, 1958; Danish Institute Contemporary Art, Freedom Hall, Sønderborg 1961; Ostseeländer, Rostock 1961-62, 1969; Artists in Odsherred, 1977; Copenhagen 1978; Danish. landscapes, Norwegian Art Museum. 1981; Danish Cultural Institute, The Artists House, Ukraine 1986.
