Alfred de Breanski Sr.
The Hollow Beeches at Burnham

19th century

About the Item

Fine 19th century landscape oil on canvas by Alfred de Breanski Sr., this sunset, color and light, are exceptional in this work. Alfred De Breanski is renowned for his landscapes of mountains, lakes and rivers in Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland. He was a successful artist in his time, as was his brother and later his son Alfred Fontville de Breanski, Jr. De Breanski exhibited widely in his lifetime, and his paintings have continued to be in demand to the present time. Drawing on the detail of Constable and the idyllic natural scenery of the British Romantics, the work of De Breanski is recognizable and monumental. De Breanski is well known for traveling long distances and setting up his easel outdoors to capture a fleeting moment of light, plein art at its best. Painting a sunset such as the one in this painting, in that moment, is a hallmark of his work. Unlike impressionism, De Breanski paints his subjects in fine detail, with the shifting shades and shadows. This painting exemplifies his finest work in this sunset scene on water with the evening glow that is both golden and pink at once. The color in the painting on the wall seems to change with the changing light in the room, from morning to night. The sunset casts light and shadows on the great ancient beech trees and the water. The waters instill the sense of calm, stillness and peace. The Burnham Beeches woodland north of London remains a preserve for the ancient hollow beech trees. In recent times the beech woodland has been a film set for movies such as Harry Potter and Robin Hood. Verso shows the original canvas and markings typical for this artist. Signed in lower right corner. Held in a private collection in North Carolina. De Breanski Sr is the best known artist in a family of artists that include his brother and his son. His work was exhibited in the Royal Academy in London more than 40 years. De Breanski exhibited in the Royal Academy from 1872 through 1918, and also in the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Royal Cambrian Academy. According to Hayes Fine Art, the Bishop of Peterborough purchased the first of De Breanski's paintings exhibited in the Royal Academy. Fitting for this painting, that one was titled 'Evening: Softly falls the even light'. Examples of his work are in various Museums and Galleries in the UK. Known for his naturalistic and realistic landscape style, de Breanski Sr also excels in creating an idyllic, peaceful moment as in this painting. Saltire Gallerie currently has paintings on offer by De Breanski's brother Gustav, known for seascapes, and Alfred de Breanski, Jr. whose work is influenced more by impressionism and a brighter palette. However, Alfred de Breanski Sr commands the highest praise and attention for his distinctive and excellent work, with the highest sales prices. This painting is in a lightly decorative wood frame and is ready to hang! There has been previous restorative work as detailed in the condition report. but the painting presents very well now and needs no further work to be enjoyed.

A female and male Goosander bird on ice floes. In the center of the painting there is a smaller opening in the ice covered waters. This painting, by Christian Berg (1893-1976) is quite interesting and unusual for his works. It is signed "Ch. Berg" and dated 1918. Berg is mostly famous for his sculptures which was to become his signum works later in his life. He is known primarily for his abstract artworks. He was educated at the Technical School and Althin's painting school in Stockholm 1911–1914. In the years 1914–1917 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and started with animal painting in the spirit of Bruno Liljefors. Our painting is from this period just after he finished his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 1921, he studied in Berlin and Dresden which was followed by a trip to Egypt in 1925. In the same year he moved to Paris and had a studio on rue Guénégaud. He studied with André Lhote and his interest in cubism was awakened. Made sketch drawings at the free academies Colarossi and La Grande Chaumière and in 1927 he met the Swedish artist Erik Olson...
