ALFRED JANSSON (1863-1931) – FOREST LANDSCAPE
Oil on Canvas ⚜ Signed ⚜ Dated ⚜ Framed
A STUNNING IMPRESSIONIST WOODLAND SCENE FROM 1909
This original oil painting by Alfred Jansson, dated 1909, beautifully captures the serenity and richness of a verdant forest. The composition is a masterful study of light filtering through towering trees, where the interplay of shadow and golden sunlight creates depth and warmth.
Jansson’s skillful use of deep reds, earthy browns, and lush greens conveys a vibrant yet tranquil woodland setting. His expressive brushwork gives the landscape a sense of movement, allowing the viewer to experience the quiet beauty of a sunlit forest path winding through dense foliage. The foreground is richly detailed, with sturdy tree trunks and soft undergrowth leading toward a misty, light-dappled background that enhances the painting’s immersive quality.
This highly collectible piece is housed in an elegant custom conservation wood frame with a linen mat inset, designed to complement the painting’s natural tones while preserving its remarkable color integrity.

THE ARTIST:
Born in Värmland, Sweden, Alfred Jansson was a Swedish-American Impressionist painter celebrated for his lush, atmospheric landscapes. After formal training in Stockholm, Oslo, and Paris, Jansson immigrated to the United States in 1889, settling in Chicago, where he became an influential figure in the city’s Scandinavian art community.
His landscapes, often depicting forested interiors, rolling Midwest landscapes, and changing seasonal scenes, were deeply influenced by Impressionism, emphasizing light, color harmony, and texture. He exhibited 85 works at the Art Institute of Chicago between 1898 and 1925, gaining recognition for his masterful depictions of nature’s shifting moods and light effects.
Jansson was a member of the Illinois Impressionists, a collective of painters who sought to capture the beauty of natural landscapes. He worked in oils, watercolors, and pastels, producing richly detailed depictions of the American Midwest as well as scenes inspired by his native Sweden. His paintings are noted for their luminous depth and expressive brushwork, often compared to those of his contemporaries, such as Carl Lindin and Svend Svendsen.
Throughout his career, Jansson was an active exhibitor and received numerous awards, including the Clyde M. Carr Prize at the Art Institute of Chicago (1914). His works were also shown at the Swedish-American Art Association, the Chicago Society of Artists, and the Palette and Chisel Club, solidifying his reputation as a leading Scandinavian-American painter.
SELECTED EXHIBITIONS & AWARDS:
• Art Institute of Chicago (1898-1925) – Exhibited 85 paintings
• Swedish-American Art Association (1905-1924)
• Panama-Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco (1915)
• Midland Club Memorial Exhibition (1932)
• Clyde M. Carr Prize, Art Institute of Chicago (1914)
Jansson’s work remains highly collectible, admired for its rich color palette and masterful use of light. His legacy continues through his presence in private collections, exhibitions, and historic art archives.
